Similarity to the self influences memory for social targets
    with A. M. Sklenar, M. P. McCurdy, A. N. Frankenstein, and E. D. Leshikar
    Cognition and Emotion 37 (4): 595-616. 2023.
The construct of the self is important in the domain of memory research. Recent work has shown that person memory is influenced by similarity of social targets to the self. The current experiments investigate self-similarity as defined by traits and political ideology to better understand how memory for social targets is organised. Across three experiments, participants formed positive or negative impressions based on each target’s picture, a trait-implying behavior (Experiments 1 & 2), and/or p…Read more

This work gives a new argument for ‘Empirical Philosophy of Mathematical Practice’. It analyses different modalities on how empirical information can influence philosophical endeavours. We evoke the classical dichotomy between “armchair” philosophy and empirical/experimental philosophy, and claim that the latter should in turn be subdivided in three distinct styles: Apostate speculator, Informed analyst, and Freeway explorer. This is a shift of focus from the source of the information towards it…Read more

This work explores the later Wittgenstein’s philosophy of mathematics in relation to Lakatos’ philosophy of mathematics and the philosophy of mathematical practice. I argue that, while the philosophy of mathematical practice typically identifies Lakatos as its earliest of predecessors, the later Wittgenstein already developed key ideas for this community a few decades before. However, for a variety of reasons, most of this work on philosophy of mathematics has gone relatively unnoticed. Some of …Read more

In this work we argue that there is no strong demarcation between pure and applied mathematics. We show this first by stressing non-deductive components within pure mathematics, like axiomatization and theory-building in general. We also stress the “purer” components of applied mathematics, like the theory of the models that are concerned with practical purposes. We further show that some mathematical theories can be viewed through either a pure or applied lens. These different lenses are tied t…Read more

El diseño editorial: un placer estético hecho objeto
with José Ramón Fabelo Corzo and Bertha Laura Álvarez Sánchez
In Isabel Fraile Martín & Víctor Gerardo Rivas López (eds.), La experiencia actual del arte. pp. 69-81. 2011.

Modeling the Turbulent Wake Behind a Wall-Mounted Square Cylinder
with Christian Amor, Philipp Schlatter, Ricardo Vinuesa, and Soledad Le Clainche
    Logic Journal of the IGPL 30 (2): 263-276. 2022.
This article introduces some soft computing methods generally used for data analysis and flow pattern detection in fluid dynamics. These techniques decompose the original flow field as an expansion of modes, which can be either orthogonal in time, or in space or in time and space, or they can simply be selected using some sophisticated statistical techniques. The performance of these methods is tested in the turbulent wake of a wall-mounted square cylinder. This highly complex flow is suitable t…Read more

A Comparative Study between Recidivism Offenders and Non-recidivism Offenders in a Prison Sample
with Verónica Molina-Coloma and Karmele Salaberría
    Anuario de Psicología Jurídica 32 (1). 2021.
Research on penitentiary recidivism is an essential topic for the prevention of crime because, at the time of release, inmates with a high risk of committing crimes do not usually have the necessary tools to cope with the challenges of community life. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to identify criminal personality and psychopathological characteristics related to recidivism. The sample made up of 89 (n = 49 non-recidivists, n = 40 recidivists) inmates in a prison in Ecuador. The…Read more

Inner Harmony as an Essential Facet of Well-Being: A Multinational Study During the COVID-19 Pandemic
with David F. Carreno, Nikolett Eisenbeck, and José M. García-Montes
    Frontiers in Psychology 12. 2021.
This study aimed to explore the role of two models of well-being in the prediction of psychological distress during the COVID-19 pandemic, namely PERMA and mature happiness. According to PERMA, well-being is mainly composed of five elements: positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning in life, and achievement. Instead, mature happiness is understood as a positive mental state characterized by inner harmony, calmness, acceptance, contentment, and satisfaction with life. Rooted in existe…Read more

Meaning-Centered Coping in the Era of COVID-19: Direct and Moderating Effects on Depression, Anxiety, and Stress
with Nikolett Eisenbeck and David F. Carreno
    Frontiers in Psychology 12. 2021.
The COVID-19 pandemic has subjected most of the world’s population to unprecedented situations, like national lockdowns, health hazards, social isolation and economic harm. Such a scenario calls for urgent measures not only to palliate it but also, to better cope with it. According to existential positive psychology, well-being does not simply represent a lack of stress and negative emotions but highlights their importance by incorporating an adaptive relationship with them. Thus, suffering can …Read more
