Martha Nussbaum

This chapter discusses the application of the capabilities approach to the question of animal rights. It explains that this approach provides better theoretical guidance on the issue of animal entitlements over contractarian and utilitarian approaches because it is capable of recognising a wide range of types of animal dignity and of corresponding needs for flourishing. The chapter criticises the view of philosopher Immanuel Kant and his followers that mistreatment of animals does not raise questions of justice and suggests that the claims of animals should be rooted in an understanding of what sorts of capabilities animals have.

This is the latest volume in a series that has made important contributions on Hellenistic philosophy, currently the liveliest context of research in ancient philosophy. Each volume is based on a smallish conference of leading international scholars; the aim is not to generate shared work on a single issue or topic, but to produce a series of original, expert papers in a given area. A feature of the series has been to show not only that much new, good scholarship can be done on Hellenistic thought, but also that the theories brought to light are philosophically powerful, when judged by the most exacting contemporary standards. Este artículo es una presentación de la teoría aristotélica de la racionalidad que pretende, apoyándose en dicha teoría, criticar las teorías contemporáneas de la elección. Así, establece una oposición entre los planteamientos aristotélicos de la racionalidad práctica, al interior de los cuales es diferenciada la sabiduría práctica de la comprensión científica, y las recientes teorías que establecen una concepción "científica" de la racionalidad práctica, o bien, que contemplan la posibilidad de hacer del razonamiento práctico, un razonamiento científico. Sin embargo, en la reflexión crítica de Martha Nussbaum no se agotan los planteamientos contemporáneos, pues la recurrencia a ellos se hace desde la interpretación de la teoría aristotélica de la racionalidad práctica, asunto principal de este artículo. Finalmente, este texto presenta un caso literario con el fin de ilustrar y profundizar en los criterios aristotélicos de la elección práctica.
