My research centers on addiction and integrates perspectives from philosophy, neuroscience, psychology, psychiatry, and the first-hand experiences of addicts. Most of my work is concerned with (a) sorting out precisely how addiction affects agency, and (b) the implications of that complex picture for moral responsibility. I argue that addiction undermines extended autonomy in several ways, making it a compulsion—but also, that who is responsible for the various harms of addiction depends largely on societal context. Works in preparation extend my published findings into the bioethics of addiction and harm reduction.
