Ciceros Dialog De re publica endet mit der Schilderung des berühmten Traums des Publius Cornelius Scipio Aemilianus, eine der Hauptpersonen des Dialogs, in dem er detailliert die Erfahrung einer Vision des fast unermesslich großen Weltgebäudes – mit der kleinen Erdkugel in der Mitte – beschreibt. Dieser Text, der paradoxerweise gerade dadurch Anspruch auf objektive Wahrheit erhebt, dass er sich als subjektive Traumerfahrung präsentiert, ist außerordentlich einflussreich gewesen und bestimmte für Jahrhunderte die Weltvorstellung des westlichen Mittelalters. Unbestritten ist, dass Scipios Traumvision eines geozentrischen Universums das Produkt einer langen, bis weit in die Antike reichenden Tradition kosmologischer Spekulation ist, welche maßgeblich von Platon, Aristoteles und Ptolemaios geprägt worden war.

In der Bezeichnung der Welt als kosmos schwang ursprünglich zugleich ein positives Urteil über dessen ästhetischen Wert mit: das Wort kosmos konnte neben ›Ordnung‹ und ›Disziplin‹ auch ›Schmuck‹ oder ›Kleinod‹ bedeuten. Von Aristoteles wird, wie zu seiner Zeit üblich, der Begriff allerdings bereits in einem wertfreien Sinne gebraucht, offenbar austauschbar mit anderen, ebenso neutralen Begriffen wie to pan oder ouranos im Sinne von ›Weltganzem‹. Zu erforschen, wie dieser kosmos beschaffen ist und welche Ursachen und Prinzipien die natürliche Welt der Körper und Lebewesen lenken und erklären können, ist Aufgabe der Naturphilosophie, insbesondere der Kosmologie.

This first chapter provides a suitable introduction to the volume by drawing a vivid picture of Proclus’ life: his provenance, his education, and his direction of the fifth-century school of Athens. Rather than rehearsing the well-known ‘facts’ of Proclus’ life, the author revises the received portrait of the philosopher by drawing attention to little noted patterns and details in Proclus’ biography. Behind the rhetoric of Marinus’ Life of Proclus, he discovers the portrait of a complex and intriguing human figure: the greatest philosopher of the fifth century and convinced advocate of pagan culture turns out to be a man with startling pretensions and lofty ambitions. By thus depicting the life at the fifth-century school of Athens, the author also sheds light on the practice of pagan culture in the fifth century by some of the leading intellectuals of the time.
