Etienne Balibar

Addressing the dramatic situation of migrants and refugees in the Euro-Mediterranean and Euro-British space, Étienne Balibar mobilizes and questions the Marxist theoretical legacy, in particular the “law of population” and the “general law of capitalist accumulation”. Introducing the notion of “absolute capitalism” – the idea that there is no longer any existing alternative economic system to capitalism –, Balibar focuses on the violence inherent to new regimes of mobility and immobility in migration and migratory politics, focusing on borders, exploitation and the segmentation of the labour-force. Contrary to traditional Marxist analysis, absolute capitalism, according to Balibar, is not characterized by stability and self-regulation, but by financial and political instability which, due to a severely limited capacity for control and restraint of violence, opens up for extreme violence.

The present text is a branch of a research previously titled: “Philosophies of the transindividual: Spinoza, Marx, Freud.” This document includes the elements of a course taught in 2004 and 2005 at the Universities of Paris X Nanterre (seminar _Anthropology and Politics_, in collaboration with Bertrand Ogilvie) and the University of California, Irvine (_Emphasis on Critical Theory_), as well as subsequent communications at the EHESS and the University of Paris VII. The relevance of this text lies in the meaning and possible uses in philosophy, politics and social sciences of the category of the ‘transindividual’.

Cet ouvrage donne la parole à cinq philosophes marxistes français de renommée internationale - Main Badiou, Étienne Balibar, Jacques Bidet, Michael Löwy, Lucien Sève - qui présentent l'évolution de leur rapport à Marx, à la philosophie et à la politique, depuis les années 1950 jusqu'à aujourd'hui. Dans ces entretiens, chacun à son tour, les auteurs ont répondu aux questions posées par deux philosophes de générations différentes, Alexis Cukier et Isabelle Garo : comment avez-vous rencontré la pensée de Marx, et comment avez-vous commencé à en faire usage? Dans quel contexte théorique et politique, pour répondre à quelle urgence et à quel problème, en rapport avec quels engagements militants? Quelle a été l'évolution de votre conception du communisme et que devraient être une action ou une organisation politique communiste aujourd'hui? Que retenez-vous d'essentiel de la pensée de Marx pour penser la période politique présente? Au fil des réponses à ces questions, les auteurs analysent les rapports entre philosophie et politique, reviennent sur la trajectoire du marxisme en France et abordent la signification du communisme aujourd'hui. Cet article, en contrepoint de la discussion des nouvelles théories de la « reproduction sociale » et de leur confrontation avec la critique marxiste de l’économie politique, esquisse une généalogie historique et sémantique du concept même de « reproduction ». Celle-ci croise l’histoire des disciplines (notamment l’histoire naturelle et l’économie politique) et montre la persistance, mais aussi les déplacements, de trois registres de signification qu’on peut rattacher aux catégories de mimèsis, de genesis et de poièsis : reproduction d’un modèle, engendrement d’une lignée, renouvellement d’un stock. Elle permet de confronter les attitudes en face de la crise et de problématiser à nouveau les questions de la mutabilité et de l’interruption, qui sous-tendent l’imaginaire de la révolution.

International in scope and featuring a diverse group of contributors, The Borders of Justice investigates the complexities of transitional justice that emerge from its “social embeddedness.” This original and provocative collection of essays, which stem from a collective research program on social justice undertaken by the Calcutta Research Group, confronts the concept and practices of justice. The editors and contributors question the relationship between geography, methodology, and justice—how and why justice is meted out differently in different places. Expanding on Michael Walzer's idea of the “spheres of justice,” the contributors argue that justice is burdened with our notions of social realities and expectations, in addition to the influence of money, law, and government. Chapters provide close readings of Pascal, Plato and Marx, theories on global justice, the relationship between liberalism and multiculturalism, struggles of social injustice, and how and where we draw the borders of justice.

Dans cet entretien se confrontent deux points de vue sur une question cardinale pour Marx et les traditions marxistes : la question de la nation et de l’internationalisme. L’historien et le philosophe puisent tous deux dans le marxisme pour penser la question sur la longue durée et jusqu’à nos jours, tout en divergeant sur plusieurs points. Il ressort de cette confrontation une nécessaire prise en compte non fétichiste des « classiques du marxisme », insuffisants pour penser la totalité de la complexité de la persistance de la « nation », mais indispensables malgré tout pour définir une visée émancipatrice.

Qu'appelons-nous " modernité "? Cette question est travaillée selon une triple orientation philologique, épistémologique et historique, en prenant pour fils conducteurs l'auto-énonciation du sujet, la constitution du " nous " communautaire, l'aporie de l'institution judiciaire. L'interprétation défendue pose que les processus opposés du devenir-citoyen du sujet et du devenir-sujet du citoyen en viennent à se recouvrir. C'est aussi le moment où le rapport du commun à l'universel devient un écart politique au sein de l'universel lui-même. Le " jugement des autres " doit être rapporté à un " jugement de soi-même " attestant pour chacun sa propre normalité. Dès lors, l'humain ne peut coïncider avec l'institution du politique qu'à la condition de se retrancher de soi-même, dans la forme des " différences anthropologiques ". Le citoyen-sujet ne peut se comprendre indépendamment de son envers, qui le conteste et le défie.

What is the relationship between cosmopolitanism and secularism—the worldwide and the worldly? While cosmopolitan politics may seem inherently secular, existing forms of secularism risk undermining the universality of cosmopolitanism because they privilege the European tradition over all others and transform particular historical norms into enunciations of truth, valid for all cultures and all epochs. In this book, the noted philosopher Étienne Balibar explores the tensions lurking at this troubled nexus in order to advance a truly democratic and emancipatory cosmopolitanism, which requires a secularization of secularism itself. Balibar argues for the idea of the universal against its particular dominant institutions. He questions the assumptions that underlie popular ideas of secularism and religion and outlines the importance of a new critique for the contemporary world. Balibar holds that conflicts between religious and secular discourses need to be reframed from a point of view that takes into account the cultural hybridization, migration and mobility, and transformation of borders that have reshaped the postcolonial age. Among the topics discussed are the uses and misuses of the category of religion and the religious, the paradoxical genealogy of monotheism, French laïcité’s identitarian turn, and the implications of the responses to the Charlie Hebdo attacks for an extended definition of free speech. Going beyond circumscribed notions of religion and the public sphere, Secularism and Cosmopolitanism is a profound rethinking of identity and difference that seeks to make room for a renewed political imagination.

étienne Balibar has been one of Europe's most important philosophical and political thinkers since the 1960s. His work has been vastly influential on both sides of the Atlantic throughout the humanities and the social sciences. In We, the People of Europe?, he expands on themes raised in his previous works to offer a trenchant and eloquently written analysis of "transnational citizenship" from the perspective of contemporary Europe. Balibar moves deftly from state theory, national sovereignty, and debates on multiculturalism and European racism, toward imagining a more democratic and less state-centered European citizenship. Although European unification has progressively divorced the concepts of citizenship and nationhood, this process has met with formidable obstacles. While Balibar seeks a deep understanding of this critical conjuncture, he goes beyond theoretical issues. For example, he examines the emergence, alongside the formal aspects of European citizenship, of a "European apartheid," or the reduplication of external borders in the form of "internal borders" nurtured by dubious notions of national and racial identity. He argues for the democratization of how immigrants and minorities in general are treated by the modern democratic state, and the need to reinvent what it means to be a citizen in an increasingly multicultural, diversified world. A major new work by a renowned theorist, We, the People of Europe? offers a far-reaching alternative to the usual framing of multicultural debates in the United States while also engaging with these debates.

En se fondant sur une explication généalogique, philologique et contextuelle de la célèbre formule sur « l’expropriation des expropriateurs » qui, figurant à la fin de la section sur la « tendance historique de l’accumulation capitaliste », passe pour en délivrer les conclusions politiques, on se propose de démontrer que le livre I du Capital, tout en formant indiscutablement une « œuvre », n’en est pas moins essentiellement inachevable, et par voie de conséquence ouvert sur une pluralité de conceptions de la lutte des classes. Pour les postmarxistes que nous sommes, la grande question est de savoir comment définir les alternatives que comporte le capitalisme contemporain, qui s’inscrit dans l’histoire après l’expérience du socialisme. Pour ce travail, la méditation des voies dans lesquelles Marx s’est engagé demeure une expérience sans égale, même si elle ne suffit pas.

Some Occasional Remarks on Communism. The following preparatory notes are offered as a reaction to a somewhat surprising event : the renewed interest in « communism » and its symbolism. These remarks seek to define the conditions for a genuine debate, one that will avoid confusions and impostures. “Who are the communists ?” in a given political conjuncture. That is a question which, today, in the framework of a global capitalist crisis, must be given primacy over the question “what is communism ?” We must remind ourselves, furthermore, that this was already the case in the Communist Manifesto. A genealogy must nevertheless be attempted, if we are to trace back Marxian communism to its multifold background. To conclude, these remarks offer a diagnosis of the theoretical aporias in Marx, which are also the conditions for a critical incorporation of his theory within new emancipatory projects
