Mindfulness and the psychology of ethical dogmatism
    Journal of Buddhist Ethics 28 233-269. 2018.
Motivated by recent controversies concerning the relationship between modern mindfulness-based interventions and Buddhism, this article discusses the relationship between mindfulness and dogmatism in general, and dogmatism in ethics in particular. The point of view taken is primarily that of the psychology of judgment and deci-sion making: Various cognitive illusions affect the feelings of righteousness and certainty that tend to accompany ethical and moral judgments. I argue that even though th…Read more

The present article critiques standard attempts to make philosophy appear relevant to the scientific study of well-being, drawing examples in particular from works that argue for fundamental differences between different forms of wellbeing, and claims concerning the supposedly inherent normativity of wellbeing research. Specifically, it is argued that philosophers in at least some relevant cases fail to apply what is often claimed to be among their core competences: conceptual rigor—not only in …Read more

Background: A number of meta-analyses of mindfulness have been performed, but few distinguished between different facets of mindfulness, despite it being known that facets of mindfulness behave differently in different populations; and most studied the outcome of interventions, which tend to involve additional ingredients besides mindfulness. Furthermore, there has recently been some concern regarding possible publication bias in mindfulness research. Objective: Systematic review and meta-analys…Read more

    Acting as a Pyrrhonist
International Journal for the Study of Skepticism 12 (2): 101-125. 2022.
Parallels between the ancient Hellenistic philosophies of the Stoics and Epicureans, on the one hand, and modern cognitive psychotherapy, on the other, are well known and a topic of current discussion. The present article argues that there are also important parallels between Pyrrhonism, the third of the major Hellenistic philosophies, and the currently state-of-the-art “3rd wave” cognitive-behavioral therapies in general, and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (act) in particular. This provides …Read more

Reports of the Death of Value-Free Science Are Greatly Exaggerated
    Review of Philosophy and Psychology 10 (4): 689-699. 2019.
The present paper discusses the claim that value-free science is impossible. After applauding the observation of Colombo et al. Review of Philosophy and Psychology 7: 743–763, that this is at least to a considerable extent a psychological question, and should therefore be studied using the methods of psychological science, the studies performed by these authors were examined and unfortunately found seriously wanting in various respects. Beyond the merits or demerits of that particular piece of w…Read more

Quantization of the Algebra of Chord Diagrams
with Ellegaard Andersen Jørgen and Reshetikhin Nicolai
In this paper we define an algebra structure on the vector space $L$ generated by links in the manifold $\Sigma \times [0,1]$ where $\Sigma $ is an oriented surface. This algebra has a filtration and the associated graded algebra $L_{Gr}$ is naturally a Poisson algebra. There is a Poisson algebra homomorphism from the algebra of chord diagrams $ch$ on $\Sigma $ to $L_{Gr}$. We show that multiplication in $L$ provides a geometric way to define a deformation quantization of the algebra of chord di…Read more
