117The Polish School of Argumentation: A ManifestoArgumentation 28 (3): 267-282. 2014.Building on our diverse research traditions in the study of reasoning, language and communication, the Polish School of Argumentation integrates various disciplines and institutions across Poland in which scholars are dedicated to understanding the phenomenon of the force of argument. Our primary goal is to craft a methodological programme and establish organisational infrastructure: this is the first key step in facilitating and fostering our research movement, which joins people with a common …Read more

54Towards Formal Representation and Evaluation of ArgumentsArgumentation 28 (3): 379-393. 2014.The aim of this paper is to propose foundations for a formal model of representation and numerical evaluation of a possibly broad class of arguments, including those that occur in natural discourse. Since one of the most characteristic features of everyday argumentation is the occurrence of convergent reasoning, special attention should be paid to the operation ⊕, which allows us to calculate the logical force of convergent arguments with an accuracy not offered by other approaches

44Considering Carneades as a Framework for Informal Logic: A Reply to Walton and GordonInformal Logic 36 (2): 217-237. 2016.The paper offers a critical analysis of the research program for formalizing informal logic proposed by Douglas Walton and Thomas Gordon. Since their proposal is based on employing the Carneades Argumentation System, this paper aims at answering two questions: what are main benefits of applying CAS as means for formalizing informal logic, and what are possible extensions of Walton and Gordon’s research program and modifications in employing CAS?

27Thou Shalt Not Squander Life – Comparing Five Approaches to Argument StrengthStudies in Logic, Grammar and Rhetoric 68 (1): 133-167. 2023.Different approaches analyze the strength of a natural language argument in different ways. This paper contrasts the dialectical, structural, probabilistic (or Bayesian), computational, and empirical approaches by exemplarily applying them to a single argumentative text (Epicureans on Squandering Life; Aikin & Talisse, 2019). Rather than pitching these approaches against one another, our main goal is to show the room for fruitful interaction. Our focus is on a dialectical analysis of the squande…Read more

We wprowadzeniu przedstawiamy elementarne sposoby rozbudowywania argumentacji prostych w coraz bardziej złożone struktury. W drugim rozdziale podajemy ścisłe definicje pojęć służących do opisu tych struktur — argumentację definiujemy jako niepusty i skończony zbiór sekwentów, tj. jako niepustą i skończoną relację zachodzącą pomiędzy ni…Read more

Argumenty kondukcyjneStudia Philosophica Wratislaviensia 9 (4): 53-63. 2014.The term "conduction" introduced by Wellman in 1971 is almost absent in the Polish literature on arguments. Contemporarily, conductive arguments are mostly understood as pro and contra arguments, which consist not only of normal pro-premises supporting a conclusion, but also of contra-premises (exceptions) denying it. We explain why such an interpretation seems to be attractive from the logical point of view, and we propose a formal method of representing conductive arguments and calculating the…Read more
