I am Professor Emeritus of Philosophy at the University of Toronto. My most active interests are in philosophy of perception and aesthetics. In philosophy of perception, I am developing a view of interoception which treats it as special purpose sensing that yields motivationally potent states such as (underived) desires. In aesthetics, I propose a version of aesthetic hedonism based on a new account of aesthetic pleasure, and use this to support an account of how diverse artistic cultures emerge.
