I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy and a Health Innovation Professor in the Carle Illinois College of Medicine at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. My research falls primarily into two areas. The first area lies at the intersection of contemporary moral philosophy and 18th-century moral philosophy (esp. Adam Smith). The second area is biomedical ethics (esp. the values at play in the physician-patient relationship). I am also interested in Hume, Nietzsche, Freud and psychoanalysis, and the later Wittgenstein.
