Eugene Hargrove’s impact on the field of environmental philosophy is hard to adequately convey. His service as an activist, educator, and the founder of the journal Environmental Ethics created the context in which the field thrived. His legacy also provides a strong foundation for environmental ethics and activism of the future. Today, environmental philosophy is expanding to include human-dominated environments, once thought to fall outside of the purview of the discipline. Work in these “blind spots” is imperative if we wish to improve sustainability and stem the ecological bleeding that marks the Anthropocene. Hargrove’s theoretical work on “weak anthropocentric intrinsic value” opens a space for environmental ethics to better understand human-dominated environments. If Paul B. Thompson is right that the way we farm should be of utmost concern for environmentalists, then Hargrove’s insights could help protect large swaths of land beyond parkland borders.

The “local food” movement has been growing since at least the mid- twentieth century with the founding of the Rodale Institute. Since then, local food has increasingly become a goal of food systems. Today, books and articles on local food have become commonplace, with popular authors such as Barbara Kingsolver1 and Michael Pollan2 espousing the virtues of eating locally. Additionally, local food initiatives, such as the “farm- tofork,” “Buying Local,” and “Slow Food” have gained a strong international following with clearly visible impacts on the food industry and policy. The numbers of local farmers’ markets, community- supported agriculture projects, and community gardens have been on the rise steadily since 1994.

This chapter is an introduction to the volume on the legacy of Paul B. Thompson. It also provides an overview of each of the chapters in this volume, exploring how they critically engage with Thompson’s work. This is important for understanding his legacy, as each highlights how Thompson’s research impacts current and future work on some of the most pressing issues of our age—such as sustainability, food security, biotechnology, and the impacts of agricultural practices. Thompson made significant contributions to philosophical inquiry in his areas of expertise, including philosophy of agriculture, environmental ethics, and American philosophy. Food and farming are research topics of marked complexity. His expansive research portfolio carves out a unique space in the discipline, as it acts as a bridge between philosophical subfields and beyond, engaging deeply with a surprising range of scientific disciplines. Thompson’s methods are at once sensitive to complexity, scale, psychology, emotion, science, justice, theory, and culture.

The skill of calling animals to fight brings up unique ethical questions. Mages usually interact with animals in two ways: First, the author can summon animals by using animal‐summoning or monster‐summoning spells. Second, a mage can summon animals to be familiar. A familiar was once a normal animal that has been transformed into magical beast with unique powers and abilities. Bats, cats, hawks, and rats are examples of common familiar companions. The rights ethicist Tom Regan argues that animals have particular rights because they are subjects of a life, meaning that they seek to satisfy specific preferences and interests. As Lord Acton wrote, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.” It appears that this also holds in Dungeons Dragons (DD). Thus, when playing a character who can summon nonhuman animals, it may be wise to take the ethics into account when deciding what actions are best.
