Aesthetic Delight and Beauty: A Comparison of Kant’s Aesthetics and Abhinavagupta’s Theory of Rasa
with Shankar Rajaraman and Saurabh Todariya
    Journal of Dharma Studies 5 (1): 51-62. 2022.
The study aims to address the existing research gap through a thematic comparison between the aesthetics of Kant and Abhinavagupta. This paper explores Kant’s notion of aesthetic judgment based on disinterestedness with Abhinavagupta’s analysis of sādhāraṇīkaraṇa. We argue that the notions of “disinterested judgment” in Kant and sādhāraṇīkaraṇa in Abhinavagupta points towards the impersonal nature of aesthetic delight which makes the universality of aesthetic experience possible. Hence, aestheti…Read more

The selfish meme & the selfless ATMA
    Sophia 41 (1): 83-88. 2002.
Abstract The word ‘meme’ was first used by Richard Dawkins (Dawkins, 1976)1 in the sense of a replicator to introduce the idea of cultural transmission through the process of imitation, just as genes are responsible for the evolution of organisms. Following Dawkins several writers came forth to have a closer look at ‘meme’. The consensus was that this was a fascinating way of explaining cultural evolution and transmission; that meme is the basic unit of (cultural) information whose existence inf…Read more

In current trends in cognitive sciences, the discussion on body crosses the classical divide between the body and the self in terms of nature and function. Embodiment theories have helped to bring in the importance of the role of subjective experiences to understand cognition, and place the process of knowing in a cultural and social context. This article is a critique of the growing trend in cognitive sciences, particularly in affective neurosciences, and approaches, to reduce the experiential …Read more

This book discusses consciousness from the perspectives of neuroscience, neuropsychiatry and philosophy. The author argues that the central issue in brain studies is to explain the unity, continuity, and adherence of experience, whether it is sensory or mental awareness, phenomenal- or self-consciousness. The fascinating discussion that this book presents is: How do the brain and the self create the conspiracy of experience where the physicality of the brain is lost in the subjectivity of the se…Read more

Being “LaMDA” and the Person of the Self in AI
In Sangeetha Menon, Saurabh Todariya & Tilak Agerwala (eds.), AI, Consciousness and The New Humanism: Fundamental Reflections on Minds and Machines, Springer Nature Singapore. pp. 331-349. 2024.
The emergence of self in an artificial entity is a topic that is greeted with disbelief, fear, and finally dismissal of the topic itself as a scientific impossibility. The presence of sentience in a large language model (LLM) chatbot such as LaMDA inspires to examine the notions and theories of self, its construction, and reconstruction in the digital space as a result of interaction. The question whether the concept of sentience can be correlated with a digital self without a place for personho…Read more

  • Basics of Spiritual Altruism
    Journal of Transpersonal Psychology 39 (2): 137-152. 2007.
The major discussions on altruism today, particularly in the area of sociobiology, give exclusive attention to altruism as an act that favors evolutionary or social benefits. That altruism is a phenomenon exhibited by a self is almost neglected. To understand altruism it is also important to look at the nature of 'self-space' that constitutes various levels of altruism. Self-space, as presented in the Indian philosophical literature, refers to a reified self-identity that would reflect ethical a…Read more

  • Brain studies, theoretical analysis, cognitive science and cultural studies have, jointly in the last ten years, redefined the complexity of ‘consciousness’ by the factorisation of otherwise considered two less important categories. These categories are of analysis and understanding of the way we approach the problem itself into the definition of the problem. The major epistemological worry faced equally by the empirical analyst as well as the philosopher and psychologist is based on the central…Read more
