HIV testing among clients in high HIV prevalence venues: Disparities between older and younger adults
    with C. L. Ford, S. P. Wallace, T. Nakazono, P. A. Newman, and W. E. Cunningham
© 2014 Taylor Francis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends routine human immunodeficiency virus testing of every client presenting for services in venues where HIV prevalence is high. Because older adults have particularly poor prognosis if they receive their diagnosis late in the course of HIV disease, any screening provided to younger adults in these venues should also be provided to older adults. We examined aging-related disparities in recent and ever HIV testing in a p…Read more

Benefits of family and social relationships for Thai parents living with HIV
    with M. J. Rotheram-Borus, J. A. Stein, C. Jiraphongsa, S. Khumtong, and L. Li
Family and social relationships are important structural supports in Thailand that are likely to influence the health and mental health of persons living with HIV. Structural equation modeling examined these relationships among 409 PLH in two communities in Thailand. Latent variables were constructed for most outcomes and mediators, with adherence to antiretroviral therapy, depression, and disclosure represented by single-item indicators. All models controlled for gender, age, and education. Dis…Read more

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of parenting styles on emotional intelligence of HIV-affected children in Thailand. This study uses data from 205 HIV-affected children in northern and northeastern Thailand. Correlation and regression analyses were used to examine the predictors of emotional intelligence. Children reporting higher levels of stress reported less caring parenting style. Children with higher self-esteem were also more likely to perceive their parents as caring. C…Read more

The protein kinase inhibitor imatinib, also known as Gleevec, has been a notable success in treating chronic myelogenous leukemia. A recent paper in BMC Structural Biology reports a 1.75 Å crystal structure of imatinib bound to the oxidoreductase NQO2 and reveals insights into the binding specificity and the off-target effects of the inhibitor. © 2009 BioMed Central Ltd.

Caregiver burden of family members of persons living with HIV in Thailand
    with L. Li, C. Jiraphongsa, and M. J. Rotheram-Borus
Caregivers of people living with HIV in Thailand face tremendous caregiver burden. This study examines complex ways in which caregivers' mental health affects their levels of caregiver burden. This study uses data from 409 caregivers of PLH in northern and north-eastern Thailand. Multiple regression models were used to examine the predictors of caregiver burden. Depression was significantly associated with caregiver burden and being HIV positive. Inverse associations were observed between depres…Read more

Interventions for families affected by HIV
    with M. J. Rotheram-Borus, D. Swendeman, L. Li, B. Amani, and M. Nartey
Family-based interventions are efficacious for human immunodeficiency virus detection, prevention, and care, but they are not broadly diffused. Understanding intervention adaptation and translation processes can support evidence-based intervention diffusion processes. This paper provides a narrative review of a series of EBI for families affected by HIV that were adapted across five randomized controlled trials in the US, Thailand, and South Africa over 15 years. The FAH interventions targeted p…Read more

Mandatory HIV testing in China: The perception of health-care providers
    with L. Li, Z. Wu, S. Wu, M. J. Rotheram-Borus, R. Detels, M. Jia, and S. Sun
Health-care providers in China are facing an exponential increase in HIV testing and HIV-positive patients. A total of 1101 service providers were recruited to examine attitudes toward people living with HIV/AIDS in China. Logistic regression models were used to assess factors associated with providers' attitudes toward mandatory HIV testing. Providers were most likely to endorse mandatory HIV testing for patients with high-risk behaviour and for all patients before surgery. Over 43% of provider…Read more

New insight into the role of MMP14 in metabolic balance
    with H. Mori, R. Bhat, A. Bruni-Cardoso, E. I. Chen, D. M. Jorgens, K. Coutinho, K. Louie, B. B. Bowen, J. L. Inman, V. Tecca, S. Becker-Weimann, T. Northen, M. Seiki, A. D. Borowsky, M. Auer, and M. J. Bissell
© 2016 Mori et al.Membrane-anchored matrix metalloproteinase 14 is involved broadly in organ development through both its proteolytic and signal-transducing functions. Knockout of Mmp14 in mice results in a dramatic reduction of body size and wasting followed by premature death, the mechanism of which is poorly understood. Since the mammary gland develops after birth and is thus dependent for its functional progression on systemic and local cues, we chose it as an organ model for understanding w…Read more
  • Regional variations in HIV disclosure in Thailand: Implications for future interventions
    with L. Li, C. Jiraphongsa, S. Iamsirithaworn, S. Khumtong, and M. J. Rotheram-Borus
People living with HIV in Thailand face tremendous challenges, including HIV disclosure. With the advent of antiretroviral therapy in Thailand, the positive benefits of HIV disclosure are becoming more salient. However, there are regional variations in the levels of HIV disclosure in Thailand. We examined and compared the levels of HIV disclosure in Northern and Northeastern Thailand. PLH were recruited from four district hospitals in the North and the Northeast. More PLH in the North reported d…Read more
