Belief vs. commitment, validity vs. value: A response to ward Goodenough
    Zygon 28 (2): 283-286. 1993.
. This paper is on Ward Goodenough's recent article , suggesting that his points can be clarified by reiterating the distinction between the realms of meaning and relevance. Religion's “truth” is in the form of its ualue; the “proof” which it requires is uindication; and the resulting “faith” must be understood as commitment

Forty years ago, psychoanalysis reigned as the dominant form of psychotherapy and as the leading psychiatric "school" in American medical education. Since then, there have been several editions and revisions of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual which emphasized a more systematic, nosological understanding of mental illness. Starting in the mid-1950s, effective pharmacological management of disorders led to the development of bio-medical theories of mania, schizophrenia, and now even depression and anxiety. Then the behaviorist demonstrated superior treatments for phobia. In the 1960s, Rogers and Perls led American psychotherapists on a humanistic exodus from Freudian approaches. In the 1989s, Aaron Beck's cognitive direction began to dominate the treatment of depression

  • The Vanishing Mind: A Practical Guide to Alzheimer's Disease and Other Dementias (review)
    Journal of Mind and Behavior 13 (4): 417-418. 1992.
This book is deceptively titled. Until I noticed the subtitle and senior author, I thought that this might be something about American education or philosophy. The subtitle accurately describes this book. Indeed, this book represents an update of a 1983 book, which had the more accurate title, Dementia

  • Current Studies on Rituals: Perspectives for the Psychology of Religion (review)
    Journal of Mind and Behavior 13 (2): 193-194. 1992.
This is a well edited and well done book of 12 chapters. The editors and authors are scholars from the Netherlands. One nice editorial touch is a common bibliography. Although there is no index, each article is so highly internally organized, it is very easy to find something specific
  • Bizarre Behaviors: Boundaries of Psychiatric Disorder (review)
    Journal of Mind and Behavior 12 (4): 549-550. 1991.
This short paperback is a fascinating discussion of topics ranging through demon possession, vampirism, delusional jealousy, Capgras Syndrome , Ganser Syndrome , Munchausen Syndrome , and "culture-bound" disorders such as amok , koro , susto , latah , and windigo
