The article presents the results of source research conducted on the scholarly and teaching activities of the German philosopher and educator Johann Heinrich Abicht (1762–1816) who in 1804 was employed at the Imperial University of Vilnius. Research in Lithuanian, Polish, Ukrainian, and German archives has revealed many facts about Abicht’s scholarly and teaching activities in Vilnius, most of which fall during the period when Jan Śniadecki (1756–1830) was Rector at the Imperial University of Vilnius. In this paper I argue that it was Abicht and his Vilnius-based scholarly and teaching activities that were the direct cause of Śniadecki’s publication of the essay On Metaphysics in 1814, and indirectly also the trigger for all of Śniadecki’s later philosophical writings.

Šis straipsnis pateikia rezultatus šaltinių tyrimo, atlikto nagrinėjant vokiečių filosofo bei švietėjo Johanno Heinricho Abichto (1762–1816) mokslinę bei dėstymo veiklą. 1804 m. Abichtas buvo priimtas dirbti Vilniaus universitete. Lietuvos, Lenkijos, Ukrainos ir Vokietijos archyvų tyrimas atskleidė nemažai Abichto akademinės bei dėstymo veiklos Vilniuje faktų, dauguma kurių yra iš laikotarpio, kuomet Jonas Sniadeckis (1756–1830) buvo Vilniaus imperatoriškojo universiteto rektoriumi. Šiame straipsnyje teigiama, kad būtent Abichtas bei jo mokslinė ir dėstymo veikla Vilniuje buvo tiesioginė priežastis Sniadeckiui 1814 m. publikuoti esė „Apie metafiziką“, taip pat paskatinti visų vėlesniųjų Sniadeckio filosofinių raštų atsiradimą.

In his early, unfinished essay entitled Johannes Climacus, or De omnibus dubitandum est, Søren Kierkegaard enters into a polemic with Hegel’s interpretation of the methodic Cartesian doubt. Kierkegaard questions the philosophical absolutism of Cartesian scepticism and his methodological universalism. For the first time in Kierkegaard’s writings, the sphere of speculation is confronted with personal involvement. Kierkegaard never published this work, and did not make any direct reference to Descartes in the same form ever again. However, certain subjects and themes remained: doubt and the alias, used when writing that early essay.

A shift away from exclusionary moral reductionism can be discerned in modern interpretations of Kant’s philosophy of religion. Consequently, at least since the 1970s, historical faith has been appreciated as a necessary and desirable element of Kant’s philosophy of religion. One of the reasons prompting Kant to include historical faith in his system of the philosophy of religion is what commentators on Kant’s philosophy call the ‘moral gap’ as there is a disproportion between the limited competence of man as a natural being and moral goals that seem unattainable. For the believer, the content of historical faith offers a real solution to the disproportion between his limitations as a natural being and the goals set for him by practical reason. For the believer, the ‘moral gap’ is not just a theoretical problem, but an existential challenge whose solution lies beyond his own limited competence. In this article, I consider whether historical faith can also provide a theoretical supplement to the picture of one’s own life. If so, then the content of historical faith may also prove important for the non-believer.

Jose Ortega y Gasset oraz Martin Heidegger sformułowali wykładnię źródeł nowożytnej nauki i nowej postawy badawczej. Obu filozofów odkrycie nowej metody w przyrodoznawstwie przypisało Galileuszowi. Uzyskiwanie wiedzy naukowej o przyrodzie przybiera w nowożytności charakterystyczną formę „projektu matematycznego”. Nowy sposób „tworzenia” praw, zastępujący dotychczasowy „opis” faktów, jest wyraźnie podkreślany przez obu współczesnych filozofów. Analogiczny sposób rozumienia przyrodoznawstwa został jednak sformułowany wcześniej przez Immanuela Kanta i po praz pierwszy wyrażony w postaci metafory „przewrotu kopernikańskiego” w przedmowie do drugiego wydania Krytyki czystego rozumu. Artykuł jest próba zestawienia tych dwóch spojrzeń na istotę nowożytnego przewrotu w przyrodoznawstwie.

Nevertheless any attempts of speculative cognition of pre-being are futile. The value of the transcendental theology is thus merely negative as it shows the bounds of theoretical use of the reason. Jedyną, bezwzględnie dobrą rzeczą jest dobra wola. Jedyną rzeczą wartą zachodu, której od człowieka można oczekiwać, jest wysiłek podjęcia wszelkich starań, służących rozwinięciu predyspozycji do dobra, zawartych w ludzkiej naturze. Jedyną prawdziwą religią jest wiara moralna rozumiana jako „niezbędne zaufanie w Boską pomoc ze względu na wszel­kie dobro, które przy naszych najuczciwszych staraniach nie jest jednak w naszej mocy". Z pewnością jest wiele powodów, jakie usprawiedliwiają narzekania na jednostronność Kaniowskiej filozofii religii. Nie ulega jednak wątpliwości, że odrodzenie moralne człowieka nie jest dla religii zadaniem marginalnym. Według Kanta jest to jedyne istotne zadanie religii, które, jak wierzą chrześcijanie, zostało pierwotnie zrealizowane w osobie Jezu­sa z Nazaretu. Czy chrześcijaństwo poniosłoby szkodę, gdyby uznać je za zadanie jedyne; czy uchybilibyśmy mu, uznając, że podczas realizacji tego zadania nie trzeba pokładać zaufania w - zawsze przecież wątpliwym - hi­storycznym objawieniu?Większa część refleksji na temat religii w pismach Kanta ma charakter czysto negatywny. Krytyka dowodów na istnienie Boga, polemika z trady­cyjnymi sposobami uprawiania spekulacji metafizycznej czy dyskusja na te­mat prawa do wypowiadania się w sprawach religii i interpretacji Pisma św. służą tylko dostarczeniu miejsca dla wiary moralnej. Kant konsekwentnie pokazuje, czym religia nie jest, i równie uporczywie powtarza, czym powinna być. Bez wątpienia w wielu wątkach filozofia re­ligii Immanuela Kanta jest kontynuacją oświeceniowej refleksji nad religią, choć na tle epoki zajmuje pozycję szczególną - w pismach królewieckiego filozofa koncentrują się bowiem najważniejsze problemy filozofii religii, uzyskując klasyczne rozwiązania.

Im vorliegenden Referat mochte ich nur die wichtigsten Motive der fruhesten polnischen Rezeption von Kants Philosophie aus dem ersten Jahrzehnt des XIX. Jahrhunderts systematisieren. In erster Linie wird kurz und bundig der Kontext nachgezeichnet, in dem die ersten polnischen Publikationen uber Kant erschienen sind, danach wird Jozef Kalasanty Szaniawski und sein vermeintlicher Kantianismus dargestellt. Zum Schluss werden die ausgewahlten, an Kants Religionsphilosophie anknupfenden Motive aus einer Abhandlung von Szaniawski unter dem Titel System des Christentums prasentiert.

The paper shortly summarizes the research on the philosophy of Kant in the Institute of Philosophy at the Nicolaus Copernicus University. About 30 years ago professor Mirosław Żelazny with a group of collaborators started their research which focuses on three main topics: the reconstruction of Kant’s philosophical system against the background of eighteenth-century German philosophy, historical investigation into its reception in Poland, and the translation of Kant’s works. One of the greatest achievements are the source investigations and the discovery of some unknown manuscripts, the first Polish edition of the “Collected Works of Immanuel Kant” and several monographies on various aspects of Kant’s thought. The paper also stresses the importance of international collaboration with eminent Kant scholars from Germany and Eastern Europe for the projects carried out in Toruń.

[full article, abstract in English; only abstract in Lithuanian] The collection of Vilnius University Library contains an incomplete, anonymous manuscript of a Polish translation of The Contest of the Faculties by Immanuel Kant. Numerous features of the manuscript confirm that it is a fragment of the lost translation by Józef Władysław Bychowiec, one of the most important popularisers of Immanuel Kant’s philosophy in Poland and Lithuania at the beginning of the 19th century. The manuscript is the earliest known work by Bychowiec, probably completed during his philosophical studies in Königsberg.
