40Auschwitz as a ChallengeDialogue and Universalism 8 (5): 103-122. 1998.What should the site of the former death camp in Oświęcim look like? How is the camp to be remembered? These questions call for considering the profound significance of the spot, a task which it is impossible to complete without taking into account the theological dimension.

33Andrzej GrzegorczykStudia Semiotyczne—English Supplement 29 5-38. 2017.Andrzej Grzegorczyk died on 20th March 2014. Even though he was 91 years old, his passing was unexpected as he had been doing creative work almost until his last moment and his intellectual capacities seemed intact. His memoirs emphasized that he had been the previous century’s last worldrenowned representative of Polish logic. While this is true, it seems much more important that he was a very unique person, academically and socially active, but also a free spirit who chose his own path.

19Andrzej GrzegorczykStudia Semiotyczne 28 (1): 63-88. 2015.Andrzej Grzegorczyk zmarł 20 marca 2014 r.

48Matematyka w teologii, teologia w matematyceZagadnienia Filozoficzne W Nauce 60 99-118. 2016.Mathematicians use theological metaphors when they talk in the kitchen of mathematics. How essential is this talk? Have theological considerations and religious concepts influenced mathematics? Can mathematical models illuminate theology? Some authors have given positive answers to these questions, but they do not seem final. It is unclear how religious views influenced the work of those mathematicians who were also theologians. Religious background of some mathematical concepts could have been …Read more

9The jedwabne Service: a Grand Gesture with No Immediately Perceptible Consequences?Dialogue and Universalism 11 (5): 135-138. 2001.The penitential prayer of the Polish Catholic Bishops on May 27, 2001 in Warsaw was a memorable and important event. In an unequivocal way they accepted moral responsibility for the massacre of the Jewish community of Jedwabne on July 10, 1941, in which Poles and Catholics took part. This was a symbolic gesture of great significance in the current debate about the massacre, one which has changed the Polish perception of World War II: although the Germans conceived and executed the plan of killin…Read more

30Steps to Tsshuvah. (On the Letter of the Polish Episcopate Council for Religious Dialogue of August 25, 2000)Dialogue and Universalism 11 (1): 59-62. 2001.The recent letter of the Polish Episcopate is devoted to dialogue with other religions and with non-believers, but its most important section is about Jews and Judaism. It mentions sins from the time of the Shoah, namely those of indifference and enmity towards Jews. The letter opens the way to a more honest appraisal of wartime events. There is a long way to go.

47Characterising Context-Independent Quantifiers and InferencesStudia Humana 13 (2): 1-8. 2024.Context is essential in virtually all human activities. Yet some logical notions seem to be context-free. For example, the nature of the universal quantifier, the very meaning of “all”, seems to be independent of the context. At the same time, there are many quantifier expressions, and some are context-independent, while others are not. Similarly, purely logical consequence seems to be context-independent. Yet often we encounter strong inferences, good enough for practical purposes, but not vali…Read more

30Is Mathematics Connected to Religion? In Bharath Sriraman (ed.), Handbook of the History and Philosophy of Mathematical Practice, Springer Verlag. pp. 2757-2781. 2024.Modern mathematics has been shaped by the process of secularization of science. Yet even some present-day mathematicians use religious terms behind the (mathematical) scenes. How essential this is remains debatable. Before modernity, everything, including mathematics, was perceived from a religious perspective. Deeper connections existed for Pythagoreans, and nowadays there is a revival of Pythagoreanism. Mathematics was used by medieval theologians, and even the founders of modern science – for…Read more

18On the Oscillation Model and Its LogicIn Vestrucci Andrea (ed.), Beyond Babel: Religion and Linguistic Pluralism, Springer Verlag. pp. 133-145. 2023.Sometimes an oscillation takes place between two incompatible approaches to an experienced situation: from one to another, then back and then again, and again. The oscillation is not an additional ingredient but an essential aspect of the situation. Both approaches are needed: by assuming one of them the participant is led to understand the need of the other. A process of this kind occurs in interfaith dialogue: we oscillate between considering the other religion from an objective standpoint and…Read more

89Theological Metaphors in MathematicsStudies in Logic, Grammar and Rhetoric 44 (1): 13-30. 2016.Examples of possible theological influences upon the development of mathematics are indicated. The best known connection can be found in the realm of infinite sets treated by us as known or graspable, which constitutes a divine-like approach. Also the move to treat infinite processes as if they were one finished object that can be identified with its limits is routine in mathematicians, but refers to seemingly super-human power. For centuries this was seen as wrong and even today some philosophe…Read more
