When consumers make environmentally unfriendly choicesEnvironmental Politics 20 (3): 340-355. 2011.A set of strategies that argue in favour of reducing carbon emissions by restricting private consumer choices on the grounds of their environmental implications are addressed. A number of ways to criticise and ban environmentally unfriendly consumption on the basis of the liberal harm principle and ideas of over- and mis-consumption are discussed. In the final analysis, doubts remain regarding the normative plausibility and political effectiveness of these strategies.
