This investigation demonstrates how dominant metaphors crystallize through technical artifacts, subsequently constraining what can be thought within their horizon. Through systematic analysis of five historical-technical constellations, mechanical philosophy (Galileo, Descartes, Newton), thermodynamic systems (Carnot, Clausius, Kelvin), information-theoretic frameworks (Shannon, Turing, von Neumann), computational processing (Chomsky, Fodor, cognitive science), and algorithmic pattern-matching (transformer architectures, large language models), this work establishes that metaphors do not merely describe reality but constitute it through technical mediation. Each constellation analysis proceeds through three movements: (1) the metaphor’s emergence from specific technical practices (Wittgenstein’s “form of life”); (2) its crystallization into seemingly natural categories (Kant’s transcendental illusion); (3) its imprisonment of subsequent thought within its operative horizon (Kuhn’s paradigmatic constraints). The genealogical method, indebted to Hamann’s metacritique of Kant, Bachelard’s epistemological rupture, and Koyré’s historical epistemology, reveals that what appear as discoveries of nature’s structure are actually projections of technical apparatus onto being itself. The convergence across five artifacts establishes that humans do not possess metaphors as neutral descriptive tools but are possessed by them through technogenetic co-constitution, where each technical transformation reconstitutes both the artifact and the human who wields it.

This paper excavates a moment of profound ontological transformation: the introduction of spaces between words by Irish monks in the 7th-8th centuries CE. Far from a mere technical convenience, word separation fundamentally reconstituted what language is, what reading means, and ultimately what human interiority could be. Through deep engagement with Kant's transcendental categories, Hamann's metacritique, and Wittgenstein's examination of hinges in On Certainty, this paper demonstrates that the seemingly self-evident distinction between "internal thought" and "external expression" is not a natural feature of consciousness but a grammatical achievement enabled by specific writing technologies. The paper shows how Irish monks' pedagogical solution to teaching Latin created the material conditions for: (1) silent reading, (2) the appearance of language as interior mental representation, (3) alphabetical indexing and archival memory, and (4) the categorical architecture that Kant systematically identified as structuring Western experience. What Kant presents as a priori categories of unity, plurality, and totality are revealed as grammatically constituted frameworks, not transcendental necessities but historical achievements that work precisely because they organize our world through language.

This essay develops Hannah Arendt's concept of natality as an ontological structure of forgetfulness rather than mere biological or political metaphor. Through sustained engagement with The Human Condition (1958), Between Past and Future (1961), and On Revolution (1963), alongside critical readings by Peg Birmingham, Dana Villa, and Adriana Cavarero, I demonstrate that natality names the capacity for metabolic rupture, the positive power to release the determining hold of the past. This analysis reveals natality as structurally identical to the forgetfulness enabling individual cognition (through figure-ground withdrawal) and epistemological transformation (through paradigmatic rupture): in all three registers, withdrawal constitutes the enabling medium for unprecedented appearance. The essay concludes by examining how contemporary algorithmic governance threatens to eliminate natality through total memory systems that foreclose the temporal gap where political freedom appears.

This essay develops Jacques Derrida's distinction between le futur (calculable future) and l'avenir (the to-come) through sustained engagement with his concept of "absolute forgetting" (l'oubli absolu) as the ontological condition enabling genuine transformation. Through rigorous analysis of Derrida's corpus, particularly Specters of Marx (1993), Politics of Friendship (1994), Aporias (1993), Given Time (1991), and On Cosmopolitanism and Forgiveness (2001), the investigation establishes that l'avenir requires the metabolic destruction of determining frameworks through what Derrida terms structural forgetting. The analysis then demonstrates how traumatic experience fundamentally challenges this framework by presenting memory that resists all attempts at metabolic transformation. Through engagement with Emmanuel Levinas's ethics of radical alterity and extensive phenomenological analysis of trauma testimony, the investigation reveals an irreducible philosophical aporia that cannot be resolved through theoretical synthesis. The essay's culmination emerges through careful attention to how trauma survivors actually navigate this impossible terrain, revealing an unexpected transformation in the ontological meaning of forgetting itself.

In the Critique of Pure Reason Kant sets a single image at the threshold of the whole critical enterprise. The light dove, cleaving the air in free flight and feeling its resistance, imagines that flight would be easier still in empty space (Kant, 1781/1787/1998, A5/B8–9). The dove takes the air for an obstacle. Yet the air it pushes against is the very medium that holds it up; remove the resistance and the wing beats on nothing. The error reproduces itself wherever a condition of possibility is mistaken for a limit to be overcome. This essay develops forgetfulness as such a condition, an ontological structure rather than a cognitive shortfall, through sustained engagement with Heidegger's Identity and Difference and Merleau-Ponty's The Visible and the Invisible. Forgetfulness here names neither memory, the explicit retention of what was, nor forgetting, the erasure of what was, but the operative and imperceptible medium that lets both occur. The analysis works out a ternary rather than a binary: memory and forgetting are two articulations within a third thing that is no midpoint between them; it is the ground from which each is cut. That ground is what Heidegger thinks as Abgrund, the ground that grounds by withdrawing, and what Merleau-Ponty thinks as membrure, the invisible armature of the visible. Through the cases where the medium fails, Borges's Funes and Luria's Shereshevsky, who remember everything and so can think nothing, the investigation shows thought to be metabolic rather than cumulative: it does not preserve its inputs in a synthesis; it consumes them in a transformation that yields what was not there before. The Greek word holds the stake in a single term. Forgetfulness is lēthē, the concealment out of which a-lētheia, truth as unconcealment, is wrested; what withdraws does not lapse into deficiency; it sinks into the operative ground from which a present draws the room to begin. Only because the past has withdrawn can anything genuinely new arrive instead of the old returning under a borrowed name. Thought moves as the dove flies, carried by the resistance it takes for an obstacle.

This monograph demonstrates that thinking operates through incalculable metabolic transformation where forgetting constitutes the explosive rupture enabling unprecedented emergence. Memory, creativity, imagination, and abstraction all belong to thinking's metabolic process, the continuous reconfiguration of experience into capability through selective erasure. Through analysis of Borges's Funes, Luria's mnemonist Shereshevsky, contemporary neuroscience, and Large Language Models' computational architecture, I establish that perfect memory creates pure difference perception, destroying the identity it promises to preserve. Drawing on Husserl's retention-modification structure, Bergson's virtual memory as action tendency, Heidegger's threefold temporal ecstasis, Merleau-Ponty's invisible framework (membrure), Bachelard's epistemological rupture and temporal lacunae, and Kuhn's paradigm shifts as collective forgetting, I argue that thinking operates through what I term metabolic rupture, the incalculable explosion where inputs are destroyed to produce outputs that cannot be traced back to origins, with forgetting as the constitutive mechanism enabling this transformation. Memory serves as the system through which forgetting metabolizes experience into thought. This distinguishes living thought from computational synthesis, understanding from pattern matching, genuine creation from recombination. The distinction between synthesis (pattern combination preserving inputs) and metabolism (destructive transformation producing genuine novelty) reveals why current AI architectures cannot achieve thought despite sophisticated pattern matching. Through examination of Arendt's natality and Derrida's l'avenir (the to-come), I establish forgetting as the ontological foundation enabling genuinely new beginnings to enter existence through discontinuity itself, not cognitive failure but thinking's constitutive mechanism.

The field of artificial intelligence operates under a foundational category error encoded in the term Natural Language Processing. We argue that current large language models (LLMs) engage in neither natural processes, nor language in any philosophically or linguistically coherent sense, nor processing as understood in cognitive science. Instead, they perform high-dimensional statistical pattern matching on textual corpora, an extraordinary engineering achievement that remains persistently mislabeled. . Our argument unfolds in three phases: First, we demonstrate the empirical and architectural differences between human learning and transformer-based models. . Second, we examine the conceptual confusion that arises from treating understanding as substrate-independent (like flight) rather than substrate-dependent (like digestion). . Third, we investigate why language models work at all if they do not understand language. Drawing on Saussure's structuralism, distributional semantics, and the historical failure of symbolic AI, we analyse the structural conditions that make language amenable to statistical prediction and why this generates the appearance of understanding. . Through philosophical analysis (Searle, Dreyfus, structural linguistics), cognitive science, and computational history, we distinguish legitimate engineering accomplishment from ontological overreach. . We propose replacing Natural Language Processing with Statistical Text Synthesis to restore conceptual clarity and foster more responsible development. This is not a semantic quibble but a necessary intervention: what we call these systems shapes what we build, how we regulate them, and what we come to believe they can do.

This paper argues that organisations exceed mathematical capture in a structural sense, and that the project of reducing organisational reality to KPI-level formalisations destroys the intelligence the formalisations claim to measure. The argument does not deny that firms can count. Units shipped, revenue booked, headcount, defects per thousand: these are real magnitudes and the paper denies none of them. The argument separates two incapacities the conventional defence of metrics conflates. The first concerns people, whose relationships and accumulated judgement are constitutive of organisational capacity and are not magnitudes admitting measurement error because they are not magnitudes at all. The second concerns trajectory: even granting every real number a firm books, the measurement frame cannot register what the firm is building or dismantling in the act of booking it, because the would-be calculator is a constituent moment of the process it proposes to total, in the second-order cybernetic sense that Beer’s own architecture could not absorb without dissolving. The metric reports the real component of the firm’s condition and presents the projection as the whole; the discarded component is not a residual magnitude awaiting a finer instrument but a relational and constitutive process that no scalar frame ranges over. A firm can therefore post record efficiency in the same quarter it consumes an engineering substrate twenty years in the building, with the efficiency figure and the consumption standing in no tension within the frame because the frame has no term for the consumption. The argument proceeds in two registers. In the proof register, two results establish the lower bound. The horizon-mismatch theorem, developed with full force in §24 from Ashby’s law of requisite variety (1956) and elementary information-theoretic constraints on finite measurement frames, demonstrates that any regulator operating at temporal horizon shorter than its substrate cannot capture the substrate’s variety within its measurement window. A corollary holding under the condition that the firm persists, that it goes on meeting its metric rather than coming apart, then locates the unregistered variety: read as the contrapositive of Ashby’s law over the whole coupled system, persistence forces the difference onto the people operating the substrate, onto the substrate itself as accumulating degradation, or onto externalities discharged to coupled systems. The corollary converts the epistemic result into a material one and accounts for the cannibalisation-read-as-efficiency case, where a firm posts rising efficiency in the same quarter it consumes the reserve that produced its capacity. The Novikov-Boone result on the unsolvable word problem in finitely presented groups (Novikov, 1955; Boone, 1958), applied to sufficiently rich organisational categories, demonstrates that algorithmic equivalence-checking over organisational state sequences is undecidable. In the structural-analogue register, the apparatus of sheaf cohomology (Grothendieck, 1957), derived categories (Verdier, 1996), and homotopy type theory (Univalent Foundations Program, 2013) articulates what any adequate formalisation would need to capture: local-global obstruction, transformation remainder, and path-constitutive identity. The articulation is rigorous in the formal sense without claiming constructive embedding of organisations into specific mathematical objects. The argument is grounded historically through a genealogy from Stafford Beer’s Viable System Model (1972, 1979, 1985) through second-order cybernetics (Bateson, 1972; Maturana and Varela, 1980; von Foerster, 1981; Spencer-Brown, 1969) to the chiasmic ontology developed in Merleau-Ponty’s late work (1968) and extended through Barad’s agential realism (2007) and the enactive cognition of Varela, Thompson, and Rosch (1991). The argument is grounded empirically through three publicly documented cases that instantiate the apparatus across three different institutional contexts and three different evidentiary registers: the Hertz Corporation v. Accenture LLP litigation of 2019, which demonstrates the three-mechanism reform foreclosure operating in commercial digital transformation; the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust scandal documented in the Francis Report of 2013, which demonstrates the same mechanisms operating under statutory regulation in public healthcare; and the MacCormack, Baldwin, and Rusnak (2012) test of the mirroring hypothesis in Research Policy, which establishes the chiasmic co-constitution of organisation and product architecture as a quantitative empirical regularity in the software industry. The consequence is that the widespread reliance on Key Performance Indicators, Objectives and Key Results, and similar metric-based management frameworks is not a suboptimal strategy awaiting refinement. The reliance proceeds from a misapprehension of what organisations are. The misapprehension destroys the intelligence the metrics claim to measure, generates the configuration this paper diagnoses as the N-th Order Epistemic Acknowledgement State, and forces the human absorption of impossibility into bodies, relationships, and biographies. The argument has theoretical, phenomenological, and mathematical grounds, and it has consequences the paper articulates in §34 as a philosophy of cultivation rather than control. Guide to the Reader The argument runs from genealogy through ontology through proof through practice. Part I sets out the Viable System Model and the cybernetic foundations Beer drew on; Part II develops the second-order cybernetic critique that undermines Beer’s observer-stance assumption; Part III articulates the chiasmic ontology that follows from the critique, drawing on Merleau-Ponty, Barad, and the enactive cognition tradition; Part IV demonstrates the chiasmic apparatus in the ordinary moment of a Tuesday-morning bug report at a software company; Part V deploys the mathematical apparatus, with the horizon-mismatch theorem at the foundation and the structural-analogue articulations extending upward; Part VI sets out the strategic adjustments and empirical grounding, including the three documented cases that instantiate the argument across institutional contexts. Section 8, sitting between Parts II and III, develops the Terminal Attractor of Epistemic Denial: the N-th Order State that organisations enter when they maintain frameworks they collectively know to be inadequate, and the three institutional mechanisms by which reform within such configurations is foreclosed. The paper is long because the argument is structural and the structure requires the genealogy, the ontology, the formalism, and the empirical anchoring together. The core thesis can be stated concisely: an organisation cannot calculate the field it is part of co-creating through the act of calculation, and the attempt to do so generates a stable configuration in which the inadequacy is collectively known and institutionally maintained.

This paper explores how language emerged through the co-evolution of tools, gestures, and cortical development, rather than from an enlarged brain that then produced tools. Drawing on André Leroi-Gourhan's groundbreaking palaeoanthropological work showing that tool use and language share common origins in rhythmic gestural sequences, we trace how human communication has continuously transformed through technical mediation. Through Augustine of Hippo's puzzlement at witnessing silent reading in 397 CE, the Irish scribal innovation of word separation in the 7th-8th centuries, and contemporary digital transformations, we demonstrate that our relationship with language continuously co-evolves with technical systems. The paper integrates perspectives from multiple disciplines: Bernard Stiegler's philosophy of technology and his concept of "tertiary retention" (technical memory), Gilbert Simondon's theory of transindividuation (how humans and technics mutually constitute each other), and Ludwig Wittgenstein's language games (showing how different technical mediations enable different forms of life). Through detailed historical analysis of reading practices, we show how each technological transformation, from flint-knapping to alphabetic writing to digital media, fundamentally reconstitutes what language is and how humans engage with it, alongside merely recording linguistic content. Understanding language as technogenesis reveals that communication has always been a hybrid human-technical phenomenon, continuously transforming through the interplay of biological and technological evolution.

This paper presents a novel interpretation of Zeno's Achilles paradox through direct textual analysis of Aristotle's Physics (239b14–18). We argue that the paradox's recursive logic reveals a structure of 'displaced presence' whereby sequential exclusivity prevents spatiotemporal co-occupation. Unlike interpretations that import modern mathematical concepts foreign to 5th century BCE thought, our reading requires only concepts demonstrably available to ancient Greeks: exclusive spatial occupation, temporal sequence, and observable pursuit dynamics. We make no claims about Zeno's intentions but analyse what the paradox's logic necessarily implies. A new line of evidence is introduced: Aristotle's own chain of definitions in Physics V.3 (226b34–227a17), distinguishing successive (ἐφεξῆς), contiguous (ἐχόμενον), and continuous (συνεχές) relations, formally describes the very structure the Achilles paradox exploits, a relation locked in succession that can never become contiguity. This approach opens philosophical inquiry rather than dissolving the paradox through anachronistic frameworks.
