Spaceflight is one of the most original and important phenomena of modern society, but it’s not in the centre of modern intellectual reflection. Neither the technical and natural sciences nor the cultural and social sciences can explain this human event as a human phenomenon by their means: Naturalism on the one hand cannot explain why some sort of life leaves the environment of living, and Culturalism – always occupied with the symbolic mediated life-world of human beings – develops no systematic sense for vertical leaving the earth. The paper introduces modern Philosophical Anthropology as an adequate theory to understand spaceflight as a possible result of the condito humana. The thought of Max Scheler, Helmuth Plessner and Arnold Gehlen since the twenties of the twenty century devoleped a theory of man co-variant to the breakthrough of spaceflight in Germany and mirrors in its concepts of human being – for instance ‘excentric positionality’ – the human possibility of this epoch-making event. “Excentric positionality” exposes man as a special living being characterized by the power of imagination , by overflowing driving forces ) and by “worldopenness” to the cosmos. So this living being is able to anticipate the attainment of places beyond the earth and its biosphere , it is willing and able to invent rocket launches, which provides the initial thrust to overcome the force of gravity , and it is ready to encounter unfamiliar kinds of extraterrestrial life and intelligence . Having explained spaceflight in this way as a serious human enterprise it is expectable that in former centuries the invention of spaceflight with and without humans on board will be remembered as the key event in the 20th century

​„Plessner in Wiesbaden“ schildert das Leben und Werk eines Philosophen und Soziologen (1892-1985), der das 20. Jahrhundert durchlebt, durchlitten und durchdacht hat. Ausgangspunkt ist das jüngere Interesse seiner Geburts- und Heimatstadt an dem großen Sohn der Stadt, das sich in der Stiftung eines „Wiesbadener Plessner Preises“ manifestiert. Damit wird ein Schlüsseldenker der modernen Philosophischen Anthropologie gewürdigt. Neben einigen Beiträgen zu Plessner in Wiesbaden enthält der Band auch Beiträge zu Plessners anderen Lebens- und Wirkungsstationen wie Heidelberg, Erlangen, Köln, Groningen, Göttingen, New York, Zürich. In diesen Stationen und ihren Facetten wird deutlich, warum Helmuth Plessner einer der maßgebenden Intellektuellen der Bundesrepublik Deutschland werden konnte.​

Das Buch möchte die theoretischen Ansätze von Helmuth Plessner und Hermann Schmitz in den Dialog bringen und für die soziologische Forschung fruchtbar machen. Entfaltet werden anthropologisch-phänomenologische Perspektiven auf Wechselwirkungen, Konflikte, Überschneidungen. Ergänzend dazu wurden weitere Artikel eingeworben, die mit dem gleichen theoretischen Fokus eine breite thematische Vielfalt abdecken. Gemeinsam ist den Beiträgen des Bandes eine intensive Auseinandersetzung sowohl mit Plessner als auch mit Schmitz.

“Philosophical Anthropology,” which is reconstructed here, does not deal with anthropology as a philosophical subdiscipline but rather as a particular philosophical approach within twentieth-century German philosophy, connected with thinkers such as Max Scheler, Helmuth Plessner and Arnold Gehlen. This paper attempts a more precise description of the core identity of Philosophical Anthropology as a paradigm, observes the differences between the authors within the paradigm, and differentiates the paradigm as a whole from other twentieth-century philosophical approaches, such as transcendental philosophy, evolutionary theory or naturalism, existentialism, and hermeneutic philosophy. In determining the human being as “excentric positionality,” Philosophical Anthropology arrives at unique categorical intertwinings between the biological, social and cultural sciences

Nicolai Hartmann, einer der bedeutendsten Philosophen des 20. Jahrhunderts, zeichnet das Bemühen um eine Rekonstruktion der philosophischen Tradition in der Auseinandersetzung mit den Wissenschaften aus. Er hat, um diesen Gedanken zu unterstreichen, das Wort "systematische Philosophie" geprägt. Die Praxis systematischen Philosophierens wird erstmals in der hier in kommtierter Fassung vorgelegten Auswahl der "Cirkel-Protokolle" fassbar. Es handelt sich um das Dokument eines Disputierkreises, den Hartmann von 1920 bis 1950 geleitet hat. Hartmann hat in seiner Marburger, Kölner, Berliner und Göttinger Zeit mit einem wechselnden Kreis von persönlich eingeladenen Studenten, Studentinnen und älteren Schülern zu verschiedenen philosophischen Themen und Problemen Gespräche geführt. Aufgrund ihrer dialogischen Form geben die im Nachlass Hartmanns befindlichen Cirkelprotokolle einen unvergleichlichen Einblick in die geistige Kultur des 20. Jahrhunderts.

Philosophische Anthropologie meint in dieser Studie nicht eine philosophische Subdisziplin, sondern eine besondere Theorierichtung in der deutschsprachigen Philosophie des 20. Jahrhunderts, die mit den Namen Max Scheler, Helmuth Plessner, Erich Rothacker, Arnold Gehlen, Adolf Portmann u. v. a. mehr verbunden ist. Fischers 2008 erstmalig erschienene Studie, die hier in einer 2., durchgesehenen Auflage erscheint, hat in über dreißig Besprechungen eine enorme Resonanz erfahren – in der Philosophie, Soziologie und intellektuellen Öffentlichkeit. Sie wird gewürdigt als ein Standardwerk zur Theoriegeschichte, aber auch zur Theoriesystematik der Philosophischen Anthropologie, die damit als ein auch im 21. Jahrhundert anschlussfähiges Paradigma neu ins Spiel gebracht wird.
