It is often assumed that Kant would accept diverting the trolley in the standard trolley case. The negative element of Kant’s Formula of Humanity (FH), it is said, is not violated by diverting the trolley, since the one is not used as a mere means. Some even consider it possible that diverting the trolley in the loop case—a case in which the one clearly seems to be used as a mere means by diverting the trolley—can be permissible with regard to the negative element of FH, since the one, it is said, is not necessarily used as a means. I will argue that this debate has taken a wrong course in two respects. First, I shall argue that there is no way to divert the trolley in the loop case without infringing on FH. Second, within Kant’s ethics, it is not even permissible to divert the trolley in the standard trolley case. To show this, I will present the argument from the scope of duties.

Was ist Liebe? Dieses Buch will mit analytischem Handwerkszeug die Frage nach dem Wesen der Liebe beantworten. Dabei soll weder ihre Vielgestaltigkeit aus dem Blick geraten noch soll das Phänomen mit der definitorischen Schere zurechtgestutzt werden. In insgesamt zehn Kapiteln werden sowohl die Grenzen klassischer Versuche aufgezeigt, die Liebe zu verstehen, wie auch ein neues Modell der Liebe entwickelt. Auf der Grundlage einer allgemeinen Theorie, derzufolge nur durch Emotionen für uns etwas bedeutsam ist, wird der emotionale Charakter der Liebe in den Vordergrund gestellt. Bei dem Versuch, das spezifische emotionale Phänomen der Liebe zu bestimmen, zeigt sich: Liebe gibt es auf drei Ebenen – als Liebesanfall, als Emotionsmuster und als Meta-Emotion.

This paper deals primarily with theDoctrine of Method(DM) of Kant’sDoctrine of Virtue. First, I present an overview of theDM(1.1) and an explanation of how it is possible to teach virtue (1.2). Second, I address the following issues: Why is aDMnecessary at all (2.1)? How does theDMrelate to what Kant calls casuistry (2.2)? I will argue that wide duties have two essential characteristics: They command the right kind of moral motivation in terms of a moral maxim, and they allow for latitude. The fact that wide duties command the right kind of motivation leads to theDM; the latitude of wide duties, however, leads to casuistry. To unfold this interpretation, it must also be shown that both imperfect and perfect duties are wide duties.

Unlikemost interpreters, I do not take it for granted that Kant’s decision would be to divert the trolley. Rather, I submit, the trolley ought not to be turned, given the Kantian difference between narrow and wide duties. It is a narrow duty not to kill innocent human beings, but only a wide duty to save them. Given the latitude of the wide duty (to save the five) and the narrow and negative character of the other duty (not to kill the one), it is morally obligatory to obey the latter, i. e., not to kill the one. Also, because of the latitude of the wide duty, no conflict of duties arises. I shall rebut three objections against this wide/narrow interpretation (as I will call it) and present three additional arguments supporting it. In conclusion, I will discuss the relevance of these findings for the ethical challenges that come along with autonomous vehicles.

Kant’s duties of love include the duties of beneficence, gratitude, and sympathetic participation. But what is it that allows Kant to bring such seemingly quite heterogeneous duties under one concept, especially under the concept of love? I will argue that it is benevolence as an essential element of love that takes on this unifying role. In order to understand this role of benevolence as the unifying element of the three duties of love, the concept of benevolence will first be analyzed (part 1). Against this background, all three duties of love are then reassessed. Beneficence will be shown to be a proactive form of benevolence (part 2), gratitude to be a reactive form of benevolence (part 3), and sympathetic participation is understood as a form of reciprocal benevolence (part 4).

Gerhard Ernst formulates the following trilemma: (1) We love persons because of their lovable qualities. (2) Lovable qualities can have multiple instantiations.(3) Loved persons are irreplaceable. All three of these claims are prima facie plausible, (1) and (2), however, seem to imply the opposite of (3). Ernst wants to resolve the trilemma with reference to the distinction between what he calls the feeling of love and the commitment of love; beloved persons are only replaceable, he holds, in terms of the feeling of love. I shall argue, first, that Ernst’s proposal does not succeed, since loved ones are not replaceable even as objects of the feeling of love. Secondly, I argue that the trilemma is not a trilemma: On the presupposition that reasons only hold if one can relate to these reasons, (1) can be shown to be false; alternatively, it can be shown that (1) is not problematic in relation to (2) and (3) at all. This, in turn, is the case when one speaks of reasons in a way that does not fully explain love anyway. Thirdly, I present my understanding of irreplaceability.

In contrast to antinatalist positions, I will pose the question of whether it might not only be ethically permissible, but even imperative to have children. I will set out an argument that there is indeed a pro tanto duty to procreate, which I understand as a specification of the duty to help others. To begin with, I will present a fictitious scenario to develop the question of whether there could be a duty to procreate (1). Before presenting my argument in detail, I will set out a number of presuppositions my argument does not require (2). I will then present the argument from the last humans (3). Since it mainly refers to the suffering of the last human beings as a factum brutum, my argument has the advantage of having only very modest presuppositions and being independent of any specific deontological or consequentialist conceptions of ethics. Finally, I will address at length several objections, including the claim that the argument presented has no relevance to our lives (4).

Polyamorie ist romantische Liebe, die sich auf mindestens zwei Personen bezieht oder beziehen kann. Eine solche Definition klingt leichter als sie es tatsächlich ist. Um eine genaue und adäquate Analyse von Polyamorie zu leisten, muss, erstens, geklärt werden, was Liebe – die hier allein als romantische Liebe thematisiert wird – überhaupt ist. Sie ist, so soll gezeigt werden, ein spezifisches dispositionales Emotionsmuster, das eine besonders starke Form der subjektiven Bedeutsamkeit konstituiert. Auf dem Hintergrund dieses Verständnisses von romantischer Liebe im Allgemeinen soll dann, zweitens, gezeigt werden, dass polyamore Liebe keine andere Form der Liebe ist als monoamore Liebe, sondern sich als romantische Liebe allein durch die divergierende Anzahl der Personen, die Gegenstand der Liebe sind, von monoamorer Liebe unterscheidet; besonderer Auszeichnungen wie verantwortlich oder konsensuell, wie sie in der Literatur geläufig sind, bedarf eine so verstandene polyamore Liebe, um sie hinreichend zu definieren, also nicht. Beachtet man aber, dass es eine Sache ist, polyamore Liebe, verstanden als emotionales Phänomen, zu definieren, und eine durchaus ganz andere Sache, polyamore Beziehungen zu definieren, bleibt Raum für die Frage, wann genau eine Beziehungskonstellation eigentlich polyamor ist, oder wann eine polyamore Person einfach nur mehrere Personen liebt, ohne dass die entstehende Beziehungskonstellation als solche aber polyamor wäre. Schließlich soll, drittens, das Verhältnis von Polyamorie und Sexualität beleuchtet werden. Auch wenn Sexualität für gewöhnlich als eines der hervorstechenden Elemente der romantischen Liebe verstanden wird, gehört sie gar nicht notwendig zu ihr – und jedenfalls hätte die Behauptung, dass eine notwendige Beziehung zwischen Polyamorie und gelebter Sexualität besteht, begrifflich-normative Konsequenzen, die man wohl gar nicht haben will. Es wird gezeigt, warum es keine notwendige Beziehung zwischen Liebe und Sexualität gibt – weder zwischen monoamorer noch zwischen polyamorer Liebe und Sexualität. Auch asexuelle polyamore (romantische) Liebe ist somit möglich.

It is almost a commonplace of Kant-scholarship that Kant’s system of duties developed in the Metaphysics of Morals is inconsistent. On the one hand, Kant seems to claim that all duties of virtue are wide (imperfect) and all duties of right are narrow (perfect) duties; in fact, however, in the Doctrine of Virtue, he treats not only imperfect but also perfect duties. We will develop a proposal for this problem by analyzing what exactly wide duties actually are; Kant’s restriction-thesis that duties are wide in that they can restrict one another proves to be central. This also opens up the possibility of understanding Kant’s casuistic questions: How can, for example, the prohibition of suicide be a perfect duty, if at the same time Kant‘s casuistry suggests that certain acts of suicide might be permissible after all? We provide an answer to this question.

Current analytical philosophies of romantic love tend to identify the essence of such love with one specific element, such as concern for the beloved person, valuing the beloved person or the union between the lovers. This paper will deal with different forms of the union theory of love which takes love to be the physical, psychic or ontological union of two persons. Prima facie, this theory might appear to be implausible because it has several contra-intuitive implications, and yet, I submit, it is more coherent and attractive than it seems to be. I shall distinguish three specific models and thereby offer a differentiated account of the union theory which has not previously been provided in the literature. I will claim that two of these models should be rejected. I shall then defend the third model against certain possible objections ; but nevertheless, I shall conclude by showing how this model, too, faces further significant objections which ultimately expose the limits of the union theory of love. In conclusion, I will sketch the outlines of a non-reductive cluster theory of love.
