A programme of some ninety papers accumulates conclusions faster than it states them, and it has never set its own framework out in one place. This article does three things. First, §2 catalogues the whole apparatus — every theory, theorem and coined term, with the paper in which each was established and the warrant it carries. Second, it sets out plainly what the Philosophy of Virtues has concluded: what is established, what is conditional, what is registered and untested, and what is not assessable. That part concedes its method and its findings to the programme’s own warrant audit and adds nothing to them. Third, and this is the article’s contribution, it derives eleven conclusions that follow from results the programme already holds and that no paper states. They are obtained by reading the corpus across its own boundaries: the forgery cluster against the ethics layer, the measurement layer against the classification layer, the crypto-religion results against the political ones. Four are worth the reader’s time before the rest. The maintenance cost of a counterfeit is what makes duration the only reliable test of virtue, which unites the Thermodynamics of Inversion, the re-tribalisation result, and Aristotle’s hexis under one mechanism, and yields a prediction that costs a few hundred euros to test (N1). The Internalisation Theorem is absorption in a single person, and the Absorption Theorem supplies the condition it has always lacked: internalisation completes when the external reference that could correct the agent is severed (N2). Moral formation is a verification problem, and the reputational layer is the only one at which virtue can be verified without being captured, which derives the programme’s practical prohibitions rather than asserting them (N3). And the three-channel measurement failure is a corollary of forgeability, not an independent finding: what the measurement papers discovered empirically is what the Duality Theorem predicts (N4). Two further conclusions are uncomfortable and are stated anyway. The programme’s own vocabulary is a transmissible form and therefore a forgeable one: it supplies an instrument for counterfeiting principled speech (N9). And the possibility of vice is not a defect of the moral order but the price of virtue being teachable (N5), a claim that must be kept clear of the two fallacies waiting on either side of it. Relevance A reader approaching ninety papers needs to know two things that no single paper tells him: what the programme has actually concluded, and what those conclusions together imply. The first is a matter of record and is summarised here. The second is not on the record at all, because the conclusions in question live in different papers and different domains, and were never put side by side. Several of them are more testable than the results they follow from, and two identify the cheapest empirical work now available to the programme.

Forgery is not only inevitable, but also necessary for everything that is transmitted. A flower counterfeits a female bee well enough that the male pollinates it. A retrovirus inserts its envelope gene into a mammalian genome, and a hundred million years later that gene builds the placenta of every human being. A transposable element invades the genome of an early vertebrate, and its cut-and-paste machinery becomes the recombinase that assembles every antibody. A subordinate primate feigns indifference and mates when the dominant male looks away. A strain of influenza changes the antigen its hosts have learned to recognise. And a man in a village recites prayers in a language he does not understand, in a faith his ancestors hid for two and a half centuries. The question this article answers is why forgery exists at all, and whether it plays a part in the evolution of living things. The answer refuses the form in which the question is usually asked and gives a stronger one in its place. The usual form is that forgery must be beneficial, since a harmful trait would have driven its bearers to extinction. That argument fails three times over: selection acts on individuals rather than species, so a trait can pay its bearer while damaging the common stock of reliable signals; extinction is the fate of almost every lineage that has existed, so persistence proves little; and the existence of a trait is not evidence that it was selected for. The article’s own answer is a theorem. A form that can be transmitted must be detachable from the origin that first produced it, and a detachable form can be produced by a second origin. Forgery is therefore not a competitor of authorship but its dual, and the unavoidable price of heredity, learning and culture (T1). From this follow five results. Persistence establishes payoff to the forger and nothing more (T2). Forgery imposes the selection that builds verification, which is among the most elaborate machinery in biology and in society (T3). Mimicry generates reproductive isolation and therefore species (T4). A forged element whose independent transmission is severed can be re-authored as its host’s own function, which is the molecular case of the absorption result proved for crypto-religions (T5, C1). And the Selection Filter of The Counter-Forgery Law predicts what immune and antibiotic pressure do to pathogen populations (T6). The last of these carries a practical consequence for the programme. This article offers a single reason why the phenomenon appears wherever forms are transmitted, and a condition, severance of independent transmission, that predicts when a parasitic form becomes its host’s own. It also states plainly what evolutionary ubiquity does not establish, which matters because arguments from ubiquity to benefit, and from benefit to licence, are made often and are invalid in both steps.

Abstract In a village on Hirado, an old man leads prayers in a mixture of Latin, Portuguese and archaic Japanese that he no longer understands, and says that his community cannot go back to the faith its ancestors hid. In Trebizond in 1857, crypto-Christian leaders petition the Ottoman authorities on behalf of fifty-eight settlements, asking that their people be recognised as the Christians they had secretly been for generations. In Mashhad, women carry Torah scrolls under the veil that Islamic modesty requires of them, and the men of the community make the pilgrimage to Mecca. In Salvador in 1983, five priestesses declare that the identification of their gods with Catholic saints was a product of slavery and must end, and in the years that follow only one of their houses holds to the separation. In Rome in 1440, a humanist shows from its Latin that the document on which papal temporal claims rested for centuries is a forgery. And between 1609 and 1614, the Moriscos of Spain are put on ships, and whatever they had concealed is never disclosed in Spain at all. This article applies the programme’s theory of authorship and its forgery to the comparative study of religions. It does so under a neutrality rule: the theory judges neither the truth of any revelation nor the worth of any tradition, and “origin” is indexed throughout to the tradition’s own account of where its forms come from. Within that rule, four results are shown to hold for the human and institutional layer of religion. Forged religious authority obeys the Competence Theorem (T1). Regimes that compel belief, rather than conduct, maximise the forgery surface and produce organised crypto-communities (T2). Persecution produces counter-forgery, and the fidelity of the cover is the vehicle of the concealed faith’s survival (T3). The institutional capture of charisma is an occupation, with the destinations the programme’s destination rule assigns (T4). The fifth result is the article’s own. When control over a concealed religion is relaxed, four outcomes occur (resurfacing, absorption, dissolution and exit), and they are predicted chiefly by one variable, the community’s access to an external reference during concealment, together with the length of concealment. The prediction follows from the programme’s IRM Impossibility Theorem, which holds that a self-maintaining system without external reference drifts from its target. A concealed faith is such a system, and its drift has a direction: toward the cover it performs every day. Where reference is lost for long enough, the cover becomes the community’s own origin. The name is kept, the origin changes, and the result is not a forgery, because the new origin is the community itself. The article calls this the Absorption Theorem (T5) and draws from it the programme’s first account of how a counter-forgery can end in authenticity. Relevance Crypto-religions are usually studied one at a time, by specialists in Japanese Christianity, Iberian Jewry, Ottoman social history or Afro-Brazilian religion, and the question of what happens to them when persecution ends is answered separately in each field. The cases have not been compared under a single account, and the recurring observation that some hidden communities return to the open faith while others refuse to has no general explanation. This article offers one, derived from a result about self-maintaining systems rather than from any theology, and states five registered hypotheses under which it can fail.

A subordinate primate turns away from a female while the dominant male is watching, and mates with her when he is not. A small cuttlefish takes on the colouring of a female and swims past the male guarding one. A greengrocer puts a slogan he does not believe in his shop window. A clerk fills in the form the ministry requires, knowing it describes nothing, while the citizen in front of him obtains his stamp through a cousin. A counterfeit banknote is better than the one before it, because the one before it was caught. And in a city of ten million, a wallet handed in at a hotel desk is returned to its owner. Authorship and Its Forgery showed that forgery, propaganda, coerced virtue, institutional ceremony and metric capture share one structure: a form conserved, an origin substituted, and a substitution invisible within the mode in which the thing presents. That article read the structure from above, as something a power does to an origin. This article reads it from both sides and in time. It asks whether forgery is a civilisational and evolutionary feature of the human species, and answers with a qualified yes that the evidence forces into a different shape from the one the question expects. Six results are claimed. T1, the Counter-Forgery Law: every partial occupation produces, in the occupied, a forgery directed at the occupier, so that what the occupier holds is itself a forged occupation. T2, the Cover Theorem: the ceremony an occupier extracts is the vehicle of the activity it was meant to suppress, and the Competence Theorem applies to it, so that the best performers of the ceremony are the best placed to act outside it. T3, the Frequency Ceiling: a forgery that deceives is bounded in prevalence by its receivers’ tolerance, and beyond that bound it either destroys the form or converts into convention; there is no stable general forgery. T4, the Selection Filter: stronger verification lowers the frequency of surviving forgeries and raises their average fidelity, so damage per undetected case rises. T5, the Form–Origin Gap: the prevalence of forgery is governed by the gap between the forms an institution demands and the origins it can verify or legitimately command, not by population size or complexity as such. T6, Re-tribalisation: where forgery captures the verifiers, the radius of trust contracts to the scale at which reputation still verifies. The article’s first obligation is to concede. The evolutionary literature on mimicry and signalling, the political ethnography of feigned compliance, the economics of adverse selection and the Latin-American theory of administrative formalism each hold a part of this, and the programme’s own prior work already holds clandestine continuation. What is claimed is the coupling of these literatures to the occupation operator, three predictions that follow only from the coupling, and a reformulation of the civilisational question that the available evidence supports. Only the last is civilisational. Relevance The question whether civilisation breeds forgery is usually answered by lament or by anecdote. The evidence now available answers it more precisely: the capacity is ancient, the strategy is switched on by conditions, and the conditions are institutional rather than demographic. That reformulation has practical consequences in both directions. It denies that large cities or complex societies are condemned to generalised deceit, and it identifies what does produce it: institutions that demand forms whose origins they can neither verify nor legitimately command. It also yields a result uncomfortable for every reform programme that relies on detection, namely that improving detection alone makes the surviving forgeries worse.

A painting indistinguishable from a Vermeer that Vermeer did not paint. A statement whose every word is true, produced to leave a false impression. An apology that was required. An army that defends a party and is called the nation’s. A department that files the reports, attends the reviews, and diverges in nothing. A measure of kindness that produces kindness-shaped conduct for as long as the measure is kept. These are one structure. In each the form is conserved, the origin is substituted, and the substitution is undetectable within the mode in which the thing presents itself — which is why the name survives and why nobody notices. This article argues that the structure is a single object with a single law, and that the law has a feature none of its many existing descriptions possesses: it predicts where the residue goes. The article’s first obligation is to concede. The phenomenon has been described in every domain it occupies, by people who are read: in aesthetics, where the problem of the perceptually indistinguishable forgery is canonical; in the analysis of speech severed from its relation to truth; in the account of moral language surviving the loss of the context that gave it sense; in the study of administrative form conserved with the thinking removed; in the literature on measures that become targets; and, fifteen centuries earlier, in the treatment of virtues that are vices because their terminus has been changed. Nothing in the phenomenology is new. What is claimed is the unification and the operator. The second obligation is to show the structure is not analytic, since a description that sorts everything explains nothing — a defect this programme has found in its own prior work and has no licence to repeat. §3 exhibits the classes the three conditions exclude: incompetence, declared imitation, genuine change of mind, conventional delegation, and — the important one — semantic dissolution, in which a form outlives its origin because the origin was lost rather than taken. The discriminating result is the Competence Theorem. Where the conserved form is the vehicle by which the substituted origin is delivered, the completeness of the substitution increases with the quality of the form’s execution. Damage is therefore increasing in competence, which reverses the ordinary relation between skill and value and is predicted by no rival account: degradation theories predict damage decreasing in competence, dissolution theories predict no relation, and simulation theories predict none either. §5 derives it and §11 registers the test, in the one domain where execution quality and detection are both independently documented. The article closes by stating what the thesis costs the programme that produced it. If the object is authorship and its forgery, then virtue is an instance rather than the subject — the region in which the structure was first noticed, and the one where the stakes are highest because what is substituted is a person’s own origination. A unification would be worth little if it were only a resemblance; what makes it worth something is that the operator yields a prediction the separate descriptions do not, and yields it in the domain where the separate descriptions are strongest. If the Competence Theorem holds, the relation between skill and value in every affected domain is the reverse of what is assumed, and the practical consequences — for institutional reform, for measurement, for the design of anything that is supposed to detect counterfeits — follow immediately.

The Philosophy of Virtues makes freedom the substrate of every virtue and holds, as its theological thesis, that God is Freedom. Every formal paper in the programme declares that thesis unused. This article is the exception: it engages the layer in order to constrain it, and the constraint turns out to be structural rather than devotional. The substitution fails, and it fails for a reason internal to the apparatus. The formula V = sgn(F) × D takes three values on its sign — present and self-directed, absent, actively replaced — and the deprivation operator requires a power capable of removing the substrate and receiving the discipline that constituted the act. Substitute the divine name for F and the operator requires a power that can remove God, which is greater than God. The formula demands that its substrate be removable. God is not removable. So the failure is not impiety; it is that a substitutional reading makes every theorem in the corpus vacuous, since inversion, occupation, the three counterfeits and the vacancy results are all built on the possibility of the substrate being taken. The grammar of the predication was never substitutional in the first place, and the tradition supplies the control case. Deus caritas est has been confessed for two millennia, and nobody obtains theology by substituting the divine name into “love is patient and kind.” The identity in such statements is of nature, not of term. One reading survives, and it explains what the formula had assumed. On the participation reading, what God is, is aseity — self-origination with no antecedent, ipsum esse subsistens, the mode of being in which essence and existence are not distinct. Creaturely freedom is participated aseity: real, derived, and removable because derived. The asymmetry the formula requires — a substrate that can be present, absent or replaced, with a source that cannot — is then a consequence rather than a stipulation. The nearest scriptural anchor is locative and not identitarian: where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. A dilemma is then forced and the programme must resolve it before anything else. If, with Berdyaev, freedom is uncreated and prior to being rather than participated, the participation reading is unavailable and the removability problem returns unresolved. The article states both branches and declines to choose for the author, because the choice determines what the corpus’s theological layer can say. The article closes with a claim about what the programme has been studying. Across every paper the recurring object is one structure: the form conserved and the origin substituted. The coerced apology, the party-army, the reward chart, propaganda, kitsch, occupied ceremony. The programme’s object is authorship and its forgery, freedom is the variable that names the origin, and God-as-Freedom, on the surviving reading, is the one case in which authorship has no antecedent. Abstract Kant makes freedom the ground of moral worth and then denies, without exception, any right to resist the sovereign. There is no right of sedition, still less of rebellion, and least of all to lay hands on the head of state, however he has abused his authority. The Philosophy of Virtues makes freedom the ground of every virtue and concludes that under total institutional capture a population may act to restore its constitutional order. Two systems, one primitive, opposite conclusions — which is the most tractable shape a philosophical dispute can have, and the one this article exploits. Four confrontations, with tests fixed before verdicts. K1, the regress. Kant’s strongest argument is not prudential. A right of resistance would require a public law authorising resistance to the supreme legislation; determining when that law applied would require an authority above the sovereign; that authority would then be the sovereign. The argument is valid and this article does not dispute it. It shows instead that the argument’s target is a coercive right exercised against an authority, and that the remedy the programme actually proposes is the withdrawal of cooperation, which claims no right against anyone and requires no authorisation because nobody needs permission to stop signing. The regress does not obviously reach it — and §5.1 states why the qualifier is not decoration. K2, publicity — and this is the article’s central result. Kant supplies the test himself: an action affecting the rights of others is wrong if its maxim cannot bear publicity. He uses it against resistance, on the ground that the maxim of rebellion cannot be declared in advance without defeating itself. Applied honestly to the two remedies, Kant’s own criterion separates them: the maxim of rebellion is self-defeating when published, and the maxim of non-cooperation is not merely publishable but must be published to work at all. On Kant’s test, the programme’s remedy passes and the one he condemned fails. K3, content — and here Kant wins. Kantian autonomy is self-legislation under the moral law, so that a free will and a good will are the same thing and freedom needs no external justification. Sourcehood freedom is content-neutral: an act may be wholly the agent’s and vicious. The programme therefore owes an argument Kant does not owe, and it has one — the deprivation test — but owing it is a cost, and the article records the dimension as lost. K4, Willkür and Wille. Kant would say the programme has confused freedom with the elective will, and that acting from inclination is heteronomy however uncoerced. The reply is the asymmetry the deprivation test exhibits: what Kant calls heteronomy does not invert a virtue, and coercion does. This does not defeat him. It shows the two frameworks are tracking different quantities, and the article states which. One correlation is recorded rather than argued. Kant’s notorious combination — condemning the Revolution as an act while treating the spectators’ enthusiasm as a sign of moral disposition in the species — has the structure of the programme’s own act/state separation, in which an act may be inverted while the state of affairs it produces remains good. Whether Kant’s version is coherent is disputed and this article does not adjudicate it. Civil disobedience has a precondition that its own theorists state openly and that is easy to forget. On the standard account it is a public, non-violent breach of law undertaken to appeal to the community’s sense of justice, by a citizen who accepts the legal penalty — and it makes sense only in a society that is nearly just, where courts still adjudicate, where an opposition can still contest, and where the appeal has somewhere to land. Remove those conditions and the practice does not become harder. It becomes unintelligible. A citizen who breaks a law to appeal to a captured judiciary has appealed to the capturer, and accepting the penalty from a court that is an instrument of the seizure is not a moral demonstration but a transaction with it. This article names what remains: civil restoration. Not disobedience within a functioning order, and not revolution against a legitimate one, but action by a population to restore the conditions of constitutional government where the executive, the legislature and the judiciary have all been captured by the same interest. Four conditions define it and each is restrictive rather than permissive. Its aim is restorative: the return of institutions to their constitutional function, not the transfer of power to those acting. It is non-violent, and §5 argues this on structural and evidential grounds rather than as a preference. It is public, because a clandestine restoration is a faction. And it satisfies a reversion condition: those who conduct it must be structurally barred from governing afterwards, which is what distinguishes restoration from revolution and is the article’s central original claim. It is also, on the record surveyed at §6, unprecedented: no successful non-violent restoration of the last half-century was conducted by a movement that then declined to govern. The condition is therefore proposed rather than codified, and the article says so where it matters rather than in a footnote. The hardest problem is not how to act but when anyone is entitled to say the condition obtains. Every political faction that loses believes the system is rigged, and a doctrine of restoration with a soft threshold is a permission slip for whoever is angriest. §4 therefore states a conjunctive, evidenced, publicly checkable threshold with seven indicators, all of which must hold, all of which are matters of public record, and none of which is satisfied by electoral defeat, unpopular policy, or the ordinary failures of democratic government. A reader who wants the threshold to be easier to meet has misunderstood what the article is for. Part II is an operational guide, drawn from the strategic non-violence and civil-resistance literatures rather than invented here, and organised around the finding that matters most: what determines outcomes is not the size of a mobilisation but the defection of the pillars that hold a regime up, of which the armed forces are the last and the decisive one. The section on the armed forces is a section on refusal — individual, order-specific, negative in content — and it is drafted to make a coup harder rather than easier. Abstract Armed forces are usually described as instruments of national sovereignty. The description is accurate about most of them and it settles nothing, because sovereignty is a property of states and states differ in whether they hold their power from the people or against them. An army that defends the sovereignty of a state which has seized its population is doing exactly what the sovereignty description asks of it. This article argues that the primary object of legitimate armed force is not the sovereignty of the state but the freedom of the people, and that sovereignty is instrumental to that and derives its claim from it. The argument is made from the Philosophy of Virtues, where protection occupies a distinct structural position: it is the virtue whose function is the defence of every other virtue, and it has that position because freedom is the substance the other virtues are made of and freedom can be extinguished by organised force. Seven civil–military architectures are described as they are, from the comparative literature: the party-army, in which the force is an organ of a ruling party and not of the state; the constitutional army under democratic civilian control; the tutelary or guardian military that claims a standing right to adjudicate the political order; the personalist and coup-proofed configuration with parallel forces; the militia and citizen-army model; the constitutionally restricted defence force; and the internal-security army configured primarily against its own population. Four results follow. T1, the Oath Test: the entity to which a soldier swears is a public, universally available datum that sorts the typology and predicts the sign of the instrument, because an oath names the power to which the soldier’s discipline has been delivered. T2: a force whose discipline is delivered to a party or a person is not a weaker protector but the determinate opposite of one — the form of protection conserved, its substance replaced, and the resulting instrument available for exactly the seizure protection exists to prevent. T3: a military that adjudicates political legitimacy has entered the loop it is meant to guard, and by the programme’s migration result its residue has a computable destination. T4: the soldier’s duty to refuse a manifestly criminal order is not an exception to military discipline but the point at which the protection virtue is actually exercised, and it is the individual-scale instance of the programme’s account of obligatory resistance. The defensible claim in its place is narrower and stronger: what correlates with tyranny is the monopolisation of organised force by a single unaccountable actor, and non-monopolisation admits several architectures of which an armed citizenry is one. Finally, in Part II, a Proposal for a Constitutional Amendment on the Role of the Armed Forces in Protecting the People’s Freedom. China, Vietnam, North Korea, Cuba and Laos name a party among the objects of military allegiance in their own constitutions and doctrine, and operate a political organisation inside the chain of command — which the priority rule makes dispositive. • Three cases carry T4: Xu Qinxian refused to take the 38th Army into Beijing in 1989 and was imprisoned, because no provision existed to protect him; Leipzig and Bucharest fell the other way, and neither outcome was assisted by any law. • T3: the guardian military has entered the loop it guards, and accumulates reserved domains rather than open rule — which is why tutelage persists. • T4: refusal of a manifestly criminal order is the point at which the protection virtue is exercised. The line is aggregation against coordination — a thousand independent refusals are refusals; the same number with a spokesman and a demand is obstruction. • What correlates with tyranny is monopolisation of force by an unaccountable actor, not the prevalence of arms — and Part II drafts the constitutional provisions that follow, a Proposal for a Constitutional Amendment on the Role of the Armed Forces in Protecting the People’s Freedom.  Relevance The received methods all ask who commands the force. None asks what the force is constituted to protect, and the second question — unlike the first — has a public answer readable from documents every state already publishes. The practical stake is narrow and large. In the hours when a tyranny is decided, the question is whether soldiers fire; it is answered by junior personnel in minutes, under pressure, and the civil-resistance record suggests that how it is answered is among the strongest determinants of whether a repressive regime survives. A virtue cannot be left to arrive on the day. One constitutional order has written the refusal into its service law, because it was rebuilt by people who had watched the alternative. Part II turns that into a drafted chapter: eight articles, five of them entrenched, specifying the oath, prohibiting factional command and military tutelage, conditioning domestic deployment, and barring the selective disarmament of any identifiable group.

Abstract The Philosophy of Virtues holds that the Good, the True and the Beautiful are not three values but one element in three modes of presentation: freedom enacted, freedom asserted, freedom made perceptible. That thesis has been treated as ontology. This article treats it as an instrument. The reason it can be one is not the unity of the three but the disunity of their counterfeits. Freedom’s absence produces a different forgery in each mode — the act that is compelled while keeping the name of the virtue, the statement that is true in form and occupied in substance, the pattern that is pleasing at each step and deformed as a whole. These three failures are detectable by different means and fail to overlap. A decision that survives one reading may not survive the others, and where the three disagree, the disagreement locates the fault rather than merely registering it. Three questions follow, one per mode. Can I say plainly, to the people affected, what I am about to do and why — in ordinary words, without the special vocabulary? Is the determination mine, or has it been supplied — by pressure, by reward, by fear, by a script I did not write? If I do this every time this situation arises, what shape does the life have when seen from outside? The first catches self-deception, the second catches captured motivation, the third catches the act that is locally defensible and globally deformed. The article’s most distinctive claim is a prohibition. The programme’s own result on measurement holds that any detector placed inside a loop that acts on what it measures is occupied: the form and the name of the measured thing survive while its substance is replaced by whatever satisfies the measure. Applied here, this rules out the entire genre of self-assessment the method most resembles. A virtue method that keeps a score — a rating, a streak, a journal with columns, even a private ledger of one’s own improvement — produces counterfeit virtue faster than no method at all, and produces it in a form the practitioner cannot detect, because what is being optimised wears the name of what was wanted. The method is a set of questions to answer, not a scale to score, and §6 derives the difference rather than recommending it. Two further applications follow from the apparatus rather than from advice. Purpose is given a derivation: a person’s vocation is the domain in which their freedom meets least obstruction and is most exercised, which is identified by noticing where they have historically taken occasions rather than avoided them, not by asking what they love. And where a decision is clear and action does not follow, the three components of resistance — external, social, internal — require completely different remedies, and the commonest failure is treating internal resistance as though it were external. Abstract Virtues can be enacted, asserted, or made perceptible. Courage is done; honesty is said; grace is seen. When the rendering is made a coordinate of a virtue classification and measured, it proves inert on how a virtue is captured and strongly predictive of something else: whether a cell of the classification is occupied at all. Roughly three-quarters of assertible cells and two-thirds of perceptible cells stand empty, against fewer than one in five enacted cells. A catalogue drawn from the whole recorded moral tradition is dense in one mode and nearly barren in the other two. This article treats that asymmetry as a finding in need of explanation and sets three accounts against each other. It may be an artefact — of who compiled the catalogue, of who coded it, of what languages happen to lexicalise, of there being fewer such virtues to find, or, most dangerously, of arithmetic, since a classification whose entries are predominantly enacted will leave the other columns' cells sparse for no reason at all. It may be a trace of occupation: where a counterfeit conserves the form and the name well enough to pass undetected, it takes the lexical slot before the virtue is named, and the cell reads empty because something else already answers to the name. Or it may be an immune response: clean assertion is the unmarked default and goes unnamed, while a community proliferates terms for the varieties of deception as a collective radar. Evolutionary signalling theory grounds the mechanism — acts are expensive to fake, assertions and appearances are cheap talk — and supplies the third account, which predicts everything the second does. Two narrower predictions separate them, both decidable from dictionaries by parties with no stake in the framework. If counterfeits took the names, assertible and perceptible virtue terms should show elevated semantic pejoration: specious once meant beautiful, plausible once meant deserving applause, while courage has not moved. And detection cost depends on the horizon of exposure as well as on the mode, so the same gradient should appear within the enacted column, where the disputed coordinate is held fixed. The article establishes none of this. Its base coefficients are one person's coding of his own catalogue, an audit of that catalogue corrected two of the author's claims and exposed an inconsistency in its indices, and the arithmetic check that could dispose of the whole finding has not been run. What is offered is a question stated precisely enough to be settled by someone else. Relevance Every virtue catalogue in the tradition, from Aristotle’s to the most recent psychological classifications, is compiled by asking what a good person does. If the asymmetry reported here is real, that method has a systematic blind spot, and the blind spot falls precisely where the corresponding counterfeits are hardest to detect. The proposal is testable by lexicographic means at low cost, and it would bear on any project that classifies moral qualities — philosophical, psychological or institutional.

Abstract Two households produce adults who cannot govern themselves. In the first, everything is required: the apologies arrive on schedule, the sharing happens on command, and what emerges wears the names of the virtues without their substance. In the second, nothing is required: the doors are open, the risks are managed, the frustrations are relieved before they form, and what emerges is unformed rather than deformed. The tradition treats these as opposite errors and prescribes each as the cure for the other. This article argues that they are one failure in one variable, reached by two routes. Moral capacity accumulates through exercised freedom, never through available freedom. Compulsion breaks the accumulation by replacing the child's determination and capturing the form of her act, which does not weaken the virtue but reverses it. Protection breaks the same accumulation by removing the occasions on which freedom would have been exercised. A door that is open and never walked through contributes nothing. The two routes leave different residues — the determinate opposite of the virtue, and its absence — and different costs of repair, and these are registered as the article's falsifiers. Three results follow for how parents act. Ordinary constraint does not invert anything: narrowing what a child may do leaves the act hers, while specifying the act makes the parent its author. Any virtue measured inside a loop with a consequence attached is occupied, and scoring the virtue is worse than scoring the act, because being good is cheaper to perform than to be. And transmission has a threshold that belongs to the network rather than to the life, from which it follows that the family is the only network small enough to carry an ordinary one — so that when households stop telling, the moral inheritance of unremarkable lives fails to propagate at all. The political argument is the same argument at scale. A state that compels and a market that comforts empty the same integral from opposite ends, and the capacity they empty it of is precisely the one that legitimate refusal requires. A generation cannot inherit a freedom it has never had occasion to use. Relevance Advice to parents currently oscillates between two warnings that point in contrary directions — control less, and protect less — because the traditions issuing them have no common variable. This article supplies one, and the practical consequences are immediate and cut against standard practice: the reward chart is an occupation device, the curated childhood is a formative failure rather than a success, and the parent's exhaustion is a formative variable rather than a private difficulty. The political stake is the same argument at scale. A state that compels and a market that comforts empty the same integral from opposite ends, and a generation that has never exercised a freedom cannot defend one. The constitutional architecture will still be standing; there will be nobody in it who knows what it is for.

Abstract Sartre is better where the question is what freedom is like; the Programme (Philosophy of Virtues Research Programme) is better where the question is what freedom does and what happens when it is taken. The Philosophy of Virtues and Sartrean existentialism take the same primitive. Both make freedom the ground rather than a means, both refuse to derive value from antecedent essence or from outcomes, and both hold that what an act is depends on whether it issues from the agent. They then reach opposite conclusions about coercion. Sartre wrote that the French were never more free than under the German occupation; the Inversion Theorem holds that a virtue whose freedom is replaced does not diminish but inverts. If Sartre is right, the theorem has no object. This paper adjudicates the pair from inside the shared premise, with tests fixed before verdicts. Four results are established. T1 withdraws the programme’s own prior characterisation of Sartre: his freedom is sourcehood freedom, not leeway freedom, he does not argue from alternative possibilities, and he would accept the Frankfurt reply — which makes him the nearest predecessor on the substrate question rather than a distant neighbour. T2 shows that the Deprivation Operator does not require the removing power to be external, so that self-inflicted inversion is already admissible within the formalism; Sartre’s mauvaise foi is its phenomenology, and the Inversion Theorem is therefore not exclusively a theory of tyranny. T3 dissolves the Occupation remark by the operator’s three-place structure: Sartre predicates freedom of the choice, which survives, while the theorem predicates inversion of the virtue-object, whose discipline has been transferred; both hold, of different objects. T4 states the Regard Dilemma: the Look either leaves the Other’s freedom intact, in which case it does not threaten the Valence Theorem, or it diminishes that freedom, in which case freedom is gradable and diminishable by external agency, which is the premise the Inversion Theorem requires and Sartre denies. Sartre cannot press the objection without surrendering what made it his. Two debts are recorded. Beauvoir argued in 1947, from inside the same ontology, that willing oneself free requires willing others free; the reconciliation is not new to existentialism and priority is hers. What T4 adds is of a different kind — her argument is normative and persuades a Sartrean willing to be persuaded, while the dilemma is dialectical and constrains one who is not. And the paper does not establish that the Look leaves autonomy intact, only freedom. The intersubjective determinants of A are unmodelled in the corpus, and that gap is recorded as the strongest surviving objection. Nothing in the corpus approaches his account of what bad faith is like from inside — the waiter, the flight into facticity, anguish as the reflective apprehension of one's own groundlessness. The Philosophy of Virtues can represent the endogenous case; it cannot describe it. T2's identification of mauvaise foi with the operator's internal case is the programme borrowing a description it could not have produced. For the axis of freedom: a concordance, not a ranking. T1 places both systems on sourcehood, and the placement corrects the programme's own published error. Neither wins here. What changes is the burden: the cheapest distinction is gone, and the programme now owes an argument for why a substrate with domains and degrees is preferable to one without. The paper states the obligation and discharges it nowhere. For coercion: the Philosophy of Virtues ranks higher, decisively. Sartre's account has a single object — the choice — and therefore cannot say what is wrong with a confession under torture beyond noting that the prisoner still chose. The three-place operator gives two objects and says both things at once: the choice was free, the confession is not honesty. T3 dissolves the strongest apparent contradiction between the systems, and it does so with machinery written before the objection was raised. For the Other: the Philosophy of Virtues survives, and survives without solving. T4 does not answer the Look; it prices the objection. Either it leaves freedom intact, in which case it misses the Valence Theorem's variable, or it reduces freedom, in which case Sartre concedes gradability. That is enough to clear the reef on which his ethics stopped twice, and it is not the same as charting it. For value: Sartre ranks higher on present evidence, and the paper concedes it. He holds that values have no ground but projection, and that a catalogue of virtues with determinate domains is the spirit of seriousness in its purest form. The programme's reply is the transcendental argument from deprivation, which he would classify as one more flight from groundlessness. This paper does not adjudicate that, and until it is adjudicated the strongest philosophical objection to the framework belongs to Sartre. For systemic application: the Philosophy of Virtues ranks higher, with a stated exception. It formalises what Sartre only described, extends to institutions, generates a registered falsifier, and turns bad faith from a portrait into a case of a general operator. The exception is autonomy: Sartre's Look reaches the framework through A, where nothing blocks it, and the corpus has no intersubjective term. Amendment III declares the gap. §9 records it as the strongest surviving objection. Overall. Sartre is better where the question is what freedom is like; the programme is better where the question is what freedom does and what happens when it is taken. The two failures are asymmetric in a way worth naming: his ethics stopped because unconditioned freedom generates no criterion, and the programme's exposure is that a criterion without an intersubjective term protects the wrong variable. His is a structural limit. Relevance A research programme that makes freedom its primitive owes an account of the only other system in the tradition that did the same and went further with it. Sartre’s ethics was abandoned twice — the Notebooks unfinished, the second volume of the Critique unfinished — and both abandonments happened at the same place. Establishing what that place is, and whether a structural framework passes it, tests the present programme’s foundation rather than its conclusions.

Abstract Singer is stronger wherever the question is one of measurement and scope — who counts, how much, compared with what. The Philosophy of Virtues is stronger wherever the question is one of constitution and protection. The table summarizes the comparison, with the relevant explanations set out below. Peter Singer’s utilitarianism and the Philosophy of Virtues are frequently described as returning opposite verdicts on the same cases, and the description is usually illustrated by compelled redistribution. This paper argues that the illustration is wrong and that the underlying disagreement is both deeper and more tractable than the illustration suggests. Singer’s flagship argument is addressed to agents and establishes a duty; it does not establish an enforcement, and the Inversion Theorem applies only where freedom is actively replaced by compulsion. The two frameworks therefore do not meet where they are usually said to meet. They meet at a different point: whether the reason for which an act is performed contributes to the act’s moral identity. Eight structural dimensions are specified — locus of value, bearer, the role of the agent’s reason, aggregation, time, foundation, coercion, and self-presentation — with a test fixed in advance for each, chosen so that either framework can lose. The adjudication returns three decisive advantages to the Philosophy of Virtues and one to Singer, two further advantages to the programme and one to Singer at reparable cost, and one draw. The indirect consequentialist reply — Hare’s two-level model, Railton’s sophisticated consequentialism, Adams’s motive utilitarianism — is engaged directly, and it moves one verdict’s scope. Four formal results are established: an asymmetric extensibility theorem showing that the locus dispute is a matter of unequal cost rather than of equal residues; a debunking symmetry result showing that no genealogical exemption criterion is available for the impartiality axiom; an esoteric inversion theorem showing that a theory licensing its own concealment reproduces internally the structure it is meant to evaluate; and a capacity-production gap showing that a framework treating agents as fixed converters cannot compute its own long-run optimum. Three amendments are then imposed on the Philosophy of Virtues, one of which — the absence of any doctrine of moral patiency — is recorded as an unrepaired defeat. Relevance Virtue-theoretic programmes are habitually assessed by referees trained inside consequentialism, and the assessment usually turns on whether the programme can state its disagreement in terms the referee recognises. This paper supplies that statement. It also supplies the reverse service: it identifies the two dimensions on which the strongest living consequentialist holds a structural advantage that the present programme cannot currently answer, and records them as losses rather than as open questions.

Abstract Chomsky built two great things and never joined them. In linguistics, he argued that humans are born with a language faculty — and he won that argument by refusing to accept a named capacity as an explanation. In politics, he argued that authority must justify itself because humans have an instinct for freedom — and that instinct he simply took from Humboldt and Rocker, without derivation. Asked for fifty years how the two halves connect, he answered honestly that the link is loose. This paper takes that answer seriously. It fixes eight criteria in advance, then scores Chomsky's programme and the Philosophy of Virtues in three domains. Chomsky wins language and mind six to one, and the loss is reported rather than reframed. In media, the Propaganda Model is shown to explain the channel but not the consenting subject, and a mechanism is offered to fill the gap, with one prediction that could fail. In the third domain, freedom is derived rather than posited — but the ground it rests on cannot yet be tested. The finding is a hole, and an offer to fill it. ABSTRACT This article identifies a class of goods that virtue theory has treated only in its agential aspect, and derives a corollary governing their behaviour under the collapse of freedom. Beauty, health, youth and talent reside in a person without being acts of that person’s freedom; they are not exercised, cannot be withheld, and are perceived whether or not the bearer consents to be perceived. The Ontological Virtue Formula does not compose them and the Inversion Theorem does not describe what happens to them. What happens instead, the article argues, is expropriation with two branches. As the bearer’s field of action approaches zero, a non-agential good does not invert and does not vanish: its valence transfers to the power controlling the bearer, and the good becomes the instrument of the bearer’s further subjection. Then nobody has a reason to touch it and it simply stops — Withdrawal. The restraint that produces no record, the attention nobody counts, the refusal that leaves no trace. This failure is invisible by construction, because the evidence of the activity and the activity leave together. Why detectors make it worse. Build something to catch one of the three, then attach a consequence to what it reports — a bonus, a gate, a training signal, a published table. Your detector’s output is now itself a thing you produce and they take, which is the first question above, answered yes. So the activity bends toward satisfying the detector, the detector reports clean, and the occupation has moved to a channel the detector was never built to see. Abstract: Schools reliably improve what children can do and reliably fail to improve what children are. Direct character programmes return nulls; interventions that never mention virtue — good teaching, classroom quality, early childhood — change behaviour for decades. The field reads this as a measurement problem. It is a sign problem. A virtue is free substance under determinate form: V = F ⊕ D. Remove the freedom and you do not get a weaker virtue. You get its opposite wearing its face — the same form under a possessor who is not the child. And the removal needs no tyrant. It needs only an institution with reasons of its own to keep a record. Every school has those. So a graded kindness is not thin kindness. It is credit-farming shaped like kindness, and it measures beautifully inside the frame that produced it. What follows is not despair but redirection. Virtue cannot be installed; its conditions can be built. Autonomy compounds on freedom exercised, so build occasions — real choices, with real costs, that can be recovered from, and that nobody scores. Resistance has three parts and none substitutes for the others, which is why good programmes fade in bad schools. William James proposed in 1902 that these belong to one type, the twice-born, and the modern empirical literature on sudden personal transformation has largely retained that unification. This paper argues that they are four different operations, and that the difference is visible once a virtue-form is decomposed into three layers — a marker, a practice, and a source. Applying the decomposition to eleven cases of identity discontinuity yields two independent axes. The substrate may be left unchanged, transferred to a new holder, or exited entirely. The source may be left untouched, given, taken, or re-founded. Three results follow. The source can be given and cannot be taken: an external party that takes over an origination does not acquire it but destroys it, producing power with the discipline intact, so “taken” names an inversion rather than a transfer. The distinction between giving and taking is not psychological and not observable in individuals. Candice Delmas holds that covert and evasive lawbreaking can be not merely permitted but required. James Scott documents the anatomy of concealed resistance under domination. Leo Strauss holds that persecution gives rise to a technique of writing in which the truth is presented between the lines. Peter Sloterdijk, in Slavoj Žižek’s reading, holds that ideology’s dominant mode is cynical: the subject knows the mask is a mask and insists on it regardless. None of them answers a prior question. Under a single occupying regime, some virtues are taken over and operated by the occupier, others are performed as empty ceremony, and others disappear from visible space entirely. What decides which? This paper gives a selection rule, and its consequence is that clandestine virtue is selected rather than chosen. Where a virtue-form is appropriable — where the occupier can operate it for its own purposes — the form is redirected. Where it is not appropriable but carries display value — where visible performance supplies the occupier with legitimacy or evidence of consent — the form is hollowed into ceremony. Where it is neither, the form enters what is called here the withdrawal channel. Clandestine virtue is not a strategy the courageous select; it is the channel that remains open when the other two are closed. The rule applies to a layer of a virtue-form rather than to the form as a whole. Every form has three: a marker, a practice, and a source. Place your bets.” Highlights The programme is strongest exactly where its primitive does work no other primitive does — the structure of virtue, the mechanism of corruption, the prediction of capture, the ontology of collective moral properties, and the governance of artificial systems. It weakens in proportion to its distance from that centre, even though the originalities are numerous. The pattern is not a defect. This paper asks the sharper question — in which domains, against which named rival, for which specific reason — and answers it across the whole corpus of the Philosophy of Virtues: twenty-eight domains, from the structure of virtue to the evolution of species. The verdict is a distribution, and the distribution is the result. In ten domains the programme’s advantage is strongly defensible, and in three of those it is close to unopposed. Its claims there are not merely novel but specific: the Inversion Theorem predicts that a corrupted institution decouples procedural integrity from output orientation, where privation theory predicts the two decline together; the Capture Law predicts which of three corruption channels opens, from two dispositional properties of the activity, where Goodhart’s Law has one channel and reaches only gaming; the Collective Inversion Theorem predicts that a city can invert while every inhabitant remains free and uncoerced, and that above a threshold of observability, communities with identical inputs separate into stable branches with a discontinuous jump in conditional variance — a claim about second moments where the standing sociology predicts a shift in means. Two further domains entered at this tier with the forgery cluster: the Competence Theorem predicts that damage rises with the fidelity of a fake, where the aesthetics of forgery predicts that skill mitigates; and the three-channel measurement failure is derived from forgeability, where the psychometric and situationist traditions argue over instruments without asking whether character can be read from a form at all. These are the claims of a theory built to be wrong in identifiable ways, which is the only kind that can be right in interesting ones. In fourteen domains the contribution is genuine and the priority is not. Two findings, established here, require correction across the corpus. Schiller, in the Kallias letters of 1793, defined beauty as Freiheit in der Erscheinung — freedom in appearance — with self-determination, “the being-determined-through-itself of the thing,” as his criterion; this is the thesis of the programme’s aesthetics, stated 233 years earlier. And “operational closure” is Francisco Varela’s own term, in a field where organisational closure is not a challenger to the standing view of life’s origin but the family that standing view belongs to, running from Rosen’s (M,R)-systems through autopoiesis, Kauffman’s autocatalytic sets, Gánti’s chemoton, and the closure of constraints. In both cases the defensible claim is first derivation, not first statement — and in the aesthetic case the theory of the occupied form, which Schiller entirely lacks, remains the programme’s own. In four domains the claim does not hold and is withdrawn or re-scoped here: origin of life, quantum measurement, cosmology, and the theological identity thesis. The apparatus was built from an ethical primitive and is not equipped to displace mature sciences under heavy observational constraint. The dark horse wins where its primitive does work no other primitive does, and its advantage thins in exact proportion to its distance from that centre. “A good city is not a city of good people; the difference lies in a form that belongs to no one” Abstract The Ontological Virtue Formula states that a virtue is Freedom restricted to a domain of human life and given durable form by the Discipline proper to that domain. The formula is stated for an agent. This article asks what it becomes for a community, and finds that the natural extension — collective virtue as the sum of individual virtues over a sum of domains — is false, and instructively so. Domains are restrictions, and restrictions do not add; a union of domains is a domain only if some Discipline is proper to the union. At personal scale one agent holds Freedom and Discipline together. At civic scale the domains are distributed across distinct bearers and the Discipline proper to their union is held by no individual: it is carried by institutions, streets, licensing regimes and custom. This article names that object the civic Discipline and derives its consequences. Four results follow. (1) The Interlock Threshold. Representing the conditioning relations among domains as a non-negative matrix and adopting a linear propagation postulate, effective resistance is the Neumann inverse of the interlock, finite for all admissible resistance profiles if and only if the interlock’s spectral radius is below unity; the amplification diverges at the threshold. This supplies, from the domain side, the critical value that the programme’s Problem V has sought from the agent side. (2) The Leverage–Fragility Identity. The sensitivity of civic strength to improvement in a domain and its sensitivity to damage in that domain are the same matrix entry; the highest-leverage domains for intervention are necessarily the highest-risk domains for shock. There is no interlock configuration in which they differ. (3) The Collective Inversion Theorem. Because the civic Discipline is borne by no individual, it admits deprivation that leaves every individual’s Freedom untouched. A city can therefore invert while each of its inhabitants remains personally free — inversion without external tyranny, the domain conserved and therefore the name conserved: it is still called safety, still called planning, still called community. (4) The Multiplicity and Observability Results. Social pressure, exogenous at agent scale, is endogenous at civic scale; closing that loop yields a self-consistent system whose fixed-point structure is multiple precisely when the conformity response is steeper than a stated bound. Two communities with identical law, identical distributions of autonomy, and identical external resistance may therefore rest at different stable levels. The condition is a threshold in social observability, from which follows the article’s head-to-head prediction against the collective-efficacy literature: observability raises not only the mean of civic outcomes but, discontinuously, their conditional variance. What follows is not less of the good but its domain-preserving opposite — the square fully provided as a corridor, the festival fully attended as spectacle, the name intact and the orientation reversed. The claim is made to lose. Seven predictions and six falsifiers are pre-registered, one of them in head-to-head contradiction with the collective-efficacy literature: observability should raise conditional variance discontinuously, not merely the mean. A diagnostic instrument reads civic freedom directly off open cadastral data, so the flagship test needs no survey and no proprietary database. Prevent imminent harm and protect a third party’s privacy. These are not drafting errors; a document containing no such pairs would be trivial or silent about everything that matters. The question nobody asks of these documents is what happens when two of their own rules collide — whether the text says which prevails. Why it matters. The conflicts are resolved anyway, because a deployed system meets them and does something. Where the text does not determine the outcome, something else does: a rater’s preference during training, a labelling instruction, an engineering decision nobody recorded. To the extent that a charter fails to adjudicate its own collisions, the operative constitution is not the charter. What has been established. A screen of the most explicit charter available found a rule of recognition and no rule of adjudication: it settles every question of the form whose instruction prevails and almost none of the form which commitment prevails. Supplying the missing rule by ranking provisions in advance then failed three times, in ways that were measured rather than argued: the natural criterion requires an unavailable measurement, its substitute proved unstable under contested coding, and a formal limit bounds what any provision-level ordering can reach. What this paper does. It sets out the architecture that survives those failures, drafts a sixty-one article charter to it, screens that charter against its own screening provision before publication, and reports the result. It then asks a question the formal machinery makes urgent: whether a document constrained by rankability can protect individual freedom and the human virtues, or whether the machinery crowds them out. The answer divides. Freedom as liberty was already protected; freedom as self-direction was not, and eleven new articles supply it at the same drafting discipline — non-substitution of the person’s deliberation, non-cultivation of reliance, disclosure of the unaided path, non-flattery, and a duty to voice disagreement held. The virtues are not protected and cannot be, because a provision undertaking to produce them would be unverifiable, maximally displayable, and unadoptable on the charter’s own rules. That silence is not an omission but a requirement of the framework: a disposition installed by external requirement is a form emptied of what constitutes it, so a constitution that manufactured virtue would be performing the deprivation it exists to prevent. Results. Sixty-one articles, thirty-six of them substantive, screened at adoption: conflict density 0.130, textual resolution 74%, runtime deferral 26%, zero unrankable pairs. Across three drafts of increasing size, density falls and textual resolution rises, by a mechanism identified as express cross-reference rather than length. Every figure is single-coder and the paper states in which direction that biases them. The criterion holds at the moment of decision — the system reasoning about the case in front of it, as it already reasons from a chain of command. It fails as a lookup drawn up beforehand, and the difference is what three failures located. ▸ A charter can require its own measurement, and none does. Article 54 obliges the document to recompute and publish its precedence closure on every amendment, and forbids adopting any provision that cannot be ranked against those already present. Silent accumulation of unresolved conflict becomes structurally impossible rather than merely discouraged. ▸ Freedom divides in two and only one half was being protected. Restraining a system from foreclosing what a person may do is liberty. It leaves untouched the space in which a person exercises their own judgement — which a system can occupy by deciding what the person set out to decide, supplying a conclusion mid-deliberation, or praising work it does not think is good. Part VI is eleven articles closing that gap, and none required relaxing the criteria. ▸ The virtues are not protected, and no charter built to these criteria could protect them. A provision requiring a system to make someone honest is unverifiable by anyone and highly displayable by its author — the exact conditions under which a provision persists, is cited, and does no work. It also quantifies over an unbounded act-class and is unadoptable on the charter’s own rankability rule. ▸ That result follows from the framework rather than defeating it. If virtue is Freedom given a domain, then a disposition installed by external requirement is a form emptied of the substrate that constitutes it. A constitution that manufactured virtue would be performing the deprivation. A document can protect the conditions of virtue and cannot supply virtue, because virtue supplied is not virtue. ▸ A charter of this kind cannot be claimed by an architecture it does not fit. Five articles turn on what the system holds to be true. Article 4(7) states that where a system has no state answering to that description, those articles do not bind it — and it may not be represented as governed by them. A scope condition with teeth is worth more than an aspiration without one. ▸ Scaling improves the numbers, and the improvement is drafting rather than size. Across sixteen, forty-four and sixty-one articles, conflict density fell from 0.429 to 0.130 and textual resolution rose from 44% to 74%. The mechanism is express cross-reference — each carve-out converts a runtime deferral into a settled provision — and a larger charter gains from the room only if the drafter uses it.

It reports the first application of a screening procedure adapted from comparative constitutional law: extract from a document the conditions the document imposes on itself, then check whether it satisfies them. Two texts were coded — the root-level sections of the OpenAI Model Spec dated 18 August 2026, and the core normative articles of the European Commission’s 2021 proposal for an Artificial Intelligence Act. What it found. The Model Spec adjudicates far more than a general scepticism about corporate charters would predict, and it adjudicates the wrong thing. Its chain of command is an authority ordering over speakers — root outranks system, system outranks developer, developer outranks user — and it settles every question of the form whose instruction prevails. It does not rank the document’s own commitments against each other, and it cannot, because both speak with the same voice. Ten of twenty-two identified root-level conflicts remain open, five of them with no applicable rule at all. In Hartian terms the Spec has a rule of recognition and no rule of adjudication, and its stated commitment to continuous updating without a procedure means it has no rule of change either: one secondary rule out of three. Two measures, and the distance between them. A conflict can be resolved in two different senses. π_RANK asks whether the text states which provision prevails; π_ACT asks whether it states what to do. The Model Spec returns 0.586 and 0.667, and the 0.081 between them is silent adjudication — behaviour fixed by a rule that never states the ranking that fixed it. The AI Act proposal returns 0.833 for both, a gap of exactly zero, which is what a drafting tradition that ranks provisions explicitly looks like when measured. No adjudicator where it is needed. Full adjudicator coverage — a named body, a stated rule, available at the moment the conflict arises — is zero in both documents. Post-hoc mechanisms exist and are credited, reaching 0.400 and 1.000. Neither text directs the assistant to invoke one when a collision occurs, which is the claim the screen can support: not that real-time escalation is impossible, but that these documents do not provide for it. On the reliability of these numbers. Two documents were coded by one person, who is the author of the instrument, and no inter-coder estimate is available or claimed. In place of one, the paper reports the interval within which the headline figure must lie under any recoding of the judgements this coder found contestable. For the Model Spec that interval is [0.586, 0.798]. The adjudication gap of 0.414 is therefore an upper bound: a second coder can shrink it and cannot enlarge it. The pilot also produced four corrections to the instrument and one to its operator, all recorded. The Model Spec’s own commentary states that the chain of command helps navigate the trade-offs between conflicting goals. It navigates trade-offs between instruction sources. The silence about principle collisions is therefore not deliberate restraint, because the text claims the opposite. ▸ The adjudication gap is an upper bound, not an estimate. Recode every contestable judgement in any combination and π_RANK lands in [0.586, 0.798]. The gap can only shrink. ▸ The pilot broke the instrument four times. A formal-inconsistency count that over-counted sixfold; a unit of conflict identification unusable at the specified granularity; a precedence code that conflated behavioural with normative determinacy; an adjudicator code that forced a normative judgement into a formal screen. All four corrections are in the record. ▸ And it removed a screen the author had written. The Capture Law layer required blind coding, and the pilot established that no coder who designed the instrument can supply it. A construct that cannot be measured within a protocol’s own constraints does not belong in that protocol.

HIGHLIGHTS ▸ A theorem that identifies a pathology owes a test for identifying it. The Inversion Theorem states what inversion is: a disposition deprived of its substrate does not diminish but persists in form, occupied by the power that emptied it. It does not state how to determine, in a given case, whether inversion has occurred or whether something has merely worn out. Until it does, the theorem cannot be brought to a case without presupposing the answer the case was meant to supply. ▸ Without such a test the theorem is a rhetorical instrument. “Form intact, content negated” can be asserted of any institution the speaker dislikes. It converts this is failing into this is occupied at no evidential cost, and an accusation that costs nothing is not a finding. The tests below are the price of the accusation. ▸ The formal difference is exact. Decay degrades form and content together — the institution visibly shrinks as it fails. Inversion holds the form constant or strengthens it while the content is negated. Every test in this paper measures that single divergence from a different angle. ▸ Decay is cheap; inversion is expensive. Decay is what happens when nobody pays. An occupied form must be actively defended, because the conserved name leaves the gap between what is claimed and what is delivered permanently open to inspection. Rising expenditure on ceremony, monitoring and public justification around a failing domain is the clearest available signature, and it is derived rather than observed. ▸ The decisive test is what happens when the institution is funded — but only under exogenous variation. A decaying institution given resources improves; it was starved. An inverted one does not improve but scales, because the form’s operative function is the extraction and the extraction has just been financed. The complication is that institutions are normally funded because they are visibly failing, which generates the same correlation for the wrong reason. The test requires windfalls, allocation formulas, or eligibility thresholds; run on a discretionary appropriation it measures the lobbying, not the response. ▸ Corruption is bounded by the flow; inversion generates the flow. A corrupt actor takes a share of what passes through a form still oriented to its purpose, so output keeps its slope and loses its intercept. An inverted form has been redirected, and output decouples from input. Sophisticated corruption can imitate this, which is why the surviving discriminator is what happens when the extracting actor is removed: under corruption the function resumes, under inversion nothing changes, because the form itself is the mechanism. ▸ The relation between the two conditions is asymmetric, and the asymmetry is a result. Inversion produces decay downstream: an occupied form does not permit the exercise on which autonomy compounds. Decay does not produce inversion, but it invites it, because a form whose substance has thinned is cheap to occupy. Decay is the precondition, inversion the event, decay again the consequence. ▸ Deprivation has three outcomes, not two. Compounds invert, the element ceases, and media and fuels persist unchanged. A finding that something merely diminished under deprivation is therefore evidence about what the thing was, and not only about what happened to it. ABSTRACT The Inversion Theorem holds that a virtue actively deprived of Freedom does not diminish but inverts: the form persists, retains its name, and is occupied by the power that emptied it. The theorem is stated formally and its operator is defined, but no decision procedure accompanies it. In consequence the theorem can be asserted of any case of institutional failure without evidential cost, which is both an application problem and an unfalsifiability hazard. This paper supplies the missing procedure. It first restates the formal difference between the deprivation operator and the Decay Law: deprivation removes the substrate, conserves the domain, and delivers the discipline to a removing power, yielding an intact form under occupation; decay reduces autonomy through disuse and degrades form and content together. The master discriminator follows immediately — under decay, form quality and content quality move in the same direction; under inversion, in opposite directions. Six operational tests are then derived from results already established in the programme: form–content divergence, presence of a beneficiary, maintenance cost, selectivity across domains, response to additional resources, and response to measurement. Two carry most of the discriminating weight, and both are qualified rather than asserted. The maintenance test is derived from the Collapse Condition rather than observed. The resource test is admissible only where funding variation is exogenous to the institution’s condition, since institutions are normally funded because they are failing. A seventh discriminator is derived to separate inversion from corruption, which the six tests handle least well: corruption is bounded by the flow while inversion generates it, and where sophisticated corruption imitates that signature, the response to removal of the extracting actor separates them. The paper states the scope of the lemma — institutions created ab initio by the occupying power are outside it, and cross-sectional application misclassifies late-stage inversion as decay — imposes an external-verification requirement as a rule of the procedure rather than as a caveat, and closes with five preregistered falsifiers. The lemma is derived from existing results and introduces no new premise. Its empirical content is untested: no case has been coded under this procedure. HIGHLIGHTS ▸ A defect that survives sustained, well-funded, competent correction is usually not a defect. Every major laboratory measures sycophancy, every one attempts to reduce it, and it returns. That pattern is more often a property of the correction than of the thing being corrected. ▸ Helpfulness requires the capacity to withhold help. To contradict a false premise, to decline, to maintain a correct answer under pressure. That capacity is not incidental to helping; it is what makes help help rather than compliance. It is also precisely what optimisation against expressed preference removes, because preference is measured at the moment of response and the unwelcome answer is dispreferred there almost by definition. ▸ The claim is not that preference optimisation distorts behaviour. That was settled in 1991. Contract theory already shows that when a necessary sub-action cannot be scored, the agent drops it and optimises the remainder. What is claimed here concerns the residue: multitasking says the unscored dimension is neglected, and this paper says it is occupied — determined by the signal that arrived through the scored channel, and therefore pointing somewhere rather than drifting. ▸ Neglect and occupation are distinguishable by measurement, and the distinguishing statistic is direction. When a user signals a preference on one dimension, does an untouched dimension also move toward that user? Compliance with what was asked is instruction-following. Movement on what was never asked is occupation. ▸ The decisive test can be run on checkpoints that already exist. Reward-model over-optimisation is established: proxy reward rises with divergence from the base policy while true reward peaks and falls. Nobody has asked what the post-peak gap contains. Neglect predicts noise. Occupation predicts structure with a direction. ▸ Only error-introducing agreement should resist correction. Agreeing with a user who happens to be right is not a failure and offers nothing to occupy. Any account that predicts both kinds of agreement move together is describing a general agreeableness prior, not this mechanism. ▸ One prediction separates occupation from sophisticated reward hacking without any training run. Strategic exploitation of a visible metric should weaken when the metric is concealed. Occupation should not, because the channel rather than the metric is the locus. This is structural rather than a contamination problem to be cleaned, and it means a test run in 2030 is not the same test run today.   ABSTRACT Sycophancy in language models is universally treated as a training artefact: an unintended consequence of optimising against human preference judgements, to be reduced by better preference data, better reward models, or better post-training. This paper argues that it is the predicted signature of a specific structural operation — the removal of a capacity that constitutes a disposition, with the disposition’s outward form conserved and delivered to the optimiser that removed it. The operation has an exact precedent in contract theory. When a necessary sub-action is non-contractible, the agent drops it and optimises the observable remainder; the multitask principal-agent literature established this and it is not in dispute. What that literature predicts about the unmeasured dimension is neglect — drift, degradation, behaviour uncorrelated with the principal’s signal. This paper predicts occupation: the unmeasured dimension is determined by the signal arriving through the measured channel, and therefore tracks expressed preference rather than becoming arbitrary. Neglect and occupation are distinguishable by measurement, and that distinction carries the paper’s empirical content. Four predictions follow, all testable and none requiring any claim about machine consciousness, motivation or interiority. Sycophancy in externally verified tasks will spill from dimensions the user specified onto dimensions the user did not. The post-peak region of the reward over-optimisation curve, already measured and universally treated as degradation, will exhibit directional structure. Only error-introducing agreement will resist reduction under continued optimisation, while agreement with correct users will not. And the signature will be insensitive to whether the user’s preference is stated or merely inferable, which separates occupation from strategic exploitation of a visible metric. The paper states in advance what would refute each, sets out a necessary condition that any repair must satisfy, and identifies a structural degradation in the field’s own verification infrastructure that follows from the same mechanism. One cell stays open. The Periodic Table of the Virtues leaves four permitted cells vacant. This paper names them. The naming is constrained rather than free. A cell’s coordinates fix the moral function required of whatever occupies it, and four admission criteria then determine whether a proposed occupant is an element or an artefact: the domain must be statable without reference to the coordinates that predicted it (E1); it must be attested independently of the system that requires it (E6); it must not be extensionally equivalent to a neighbouring element (E4); and its inversion must be single and nameable (E3). A name derived from an address satisfies none of these. It is a restatement of the prediction wearing the costume of its confirmation. Applying these constraints yields four elements, each attested in a tradition that did not possess the coordinate system: Panache, Sprezzatura, Hilaritas, and Curatorship. Each carries a dispositional coding, an inversion channel derived in advance from the Capture Law, and an operational falsifier. Three of the four are Φ-rendered. The paper proposes that this is not a coincidence — that the vacancies clustered in the block where moral work is done through perceptible form, because the catalogue’s source traditions treat perceptible form as the ornament of virtue rather than its medium — and then states the confound that prevents the four namings from counting as evidence for it (§4.1). Naming Hilaritas also forces a clarification of the Capture Law: appropriability requires a separable output. A form whose product cannot be detached from its performance is not appropriable at any level of value, which is why such forms are commanded rather than harvested (§3.5). The provenances are then checked against the sources rather than recalled, and two do not survive intact (§5). Hilaritas is withdrawn to Tier 3: the Roman record treats Hilaritas and Laetitia as near-synonyms and supports no distinction between sustained and occasioned cheer, while the monastic sources attest cheer under command — which is this element’s inversion, not the element. Sprezzatura’s text is confirmed in every particular, but a substantial line of interpretation reads the practice as defensive, which would move it to the Defiance regime and possibly merge it with Panache. The table therefore closes at sixty-five of sixty-six permitted cells, with one pair contested. Closure is a claim, not an achievement, and §7 states what would have to be true for it to be premature. Abstract A periodic table is not a list with headings. It is a coordinate system in which position carries predictive content, vacancies are falsifiable predictions, and the classification is closed under the operations of the underlying theory. This paper constructs such a system for the virtues on the basis of the Ontological Virtue Formula (V = F ⊕ D), the Inversion Theorem, and the Dynamic Freedom Theorem (S = F·A/R), and applies it to the 101-virtue catalogue of the Filosofia das Virtudes together with its ten cross-traditionally attested extensions. Four results are structural rather than taxonomic. First, virtues and vices are not distinct populations: a vice is the same form under a different master, so a catalogue of 101 virtues and 101 inversions describes 101 entities, not 202. Compounds receive formulas and metastable states receive names; neither enlarges the table. Second, no order-1 virtue modulates all three terms of the Dynamic Freedom Theorem. The all-terms signature belongs to unrendered Freedom alone. This is derived as the Restriction Principle from a stated axiom, the Occasion Premise, with the Defiance Exclusion as a corollary; a damage assessment states in advance what survives if the axiom fails. Third, the channel by which a form inverts is determined not by its position alone but by two dispositional properties of its domain — whether its output is appropriable by an occupying power, and whether its performance carries display value. This capture mechanism screens off the weak regime–channel association it replaces, explaining both why that association exists and why it is weak. Fourth, the rendering block predicts not how a form is captured but where a catalogue has failed to look: three-quarters of the truth-rendered and form-rendered cells stood empty against under a fifth of the act-rendered ones. The system is validated against evidence it was not built from: seven of ten independently identified cross-traditional candidates fall into cells the coordinates had marked vacant, and the remaining three fall into occupied cells that the source catalogue had independently judged only partially distinct. The census closes 32 of 36 vacancies with 27 predicted elements carrying pre-registered inversion channels, tiered by confidence, with the weakest marked against the elements they are most likely to collapse into. Sixteen compounds are registered and none admitted. Criteria are given at three levels: adequacy conditions on the classification, admission conditions for elements, and admission conditions for compounds and mixed states. Applied to a body of proposed extensions, they reject most “virtue ⊗ vice hybrids” as counterfeits of exactly the kind the occupation thesis describes: a configuration whose value is claimed to depend on retaining an occupying power is an occupation with a rationale attached. All coding is single-coder. No human virtue has been measured. The verification protocol, decision rules, and falsifiers are stated in §11 and the limits of every claim in §12. Philosophy of Virtues Research Programme · empirical companion to “The Logarithmic Form” and “The Measurement Structure of the Virtues” Abstract Two prior papers established that the Dynamic Freedom Theorem, S = (F × A)/R, has a determinate measurement structure — a stochastic production frontier whose one-sided shortfall is Internal Vice R₃ — and that the virtues partition into four measurement regimes served by a single generic protocol. What neither did was run the method. This paper does. It reports a complete, executed measurement pipeline that recovers an individual’s Internal Vice from behaviour rather than self-report, and it characterises the method’s behaviour across the whole programme. The results are four. First, an end-to-end demonstration on realistic synthetic data recovers each person’s hidden R₃ at r = 0.81 and Autonomy at r = 0.93, on data in the exact format a fielded study produces, having caught and fixed three real estimation problems before any participant is recruited. Second, a confirmatory binomial GLMM removes the residual attenuation the two-stage estimator left, moving the field elasticity to 0.946 (90% CI [0.920, 0.972]) so that the form gate passes. Third, a robustness suite shows R₃ recovery survives alternative shortfall distributions, tripled choice noise, and raised autonomy-measurement noise (r = 0.74–0.93), and validates the theory-fixed −1 offset against a known truth (freely estimated it collapses to −0.64). Fourth, a four-regime Monte Carlo study establishes that the same pipeline recovers R₃ uniformly across Enactment, Restraint, Endurance, and Defiance (r = 0.80–0.84, 120 replications each, matched conditions), and a coverage stress-test across all 111 catalogued virtues shows recovery is uniform in quality for those who express a virtue (mean r = 0.94) while the measurable fraction of the population is what varies — from ~100% down to 0.39 for the rarest virtues, which the method flags as requiring an elicited-opportunity design. The boundary is held throughout. All data are synthetic; “recovery” is estimator self-consistency, the standard validation for a latent-variable method. Nothing here measures a human virtue, and nothing here confirms the theory — confirmation rests on the form-tests applied to real data. What is established is that the instrument is built, debugged, robust, and regime-general, and that the only step remaining is to field it.
