17Basic Concepts for Clinical PracticeIn Moral Equality, Bioethics, and the Child, Springer Verlag. pp. 131-151. 2016.Both trust and autonomy are concepts related to the moral worth of the child as a person and a human being. Respect for the child’s trust protects her as being-in-relation; respect for her (developing) autonomy aims at the child as an individual. Together, they characterize the child as a moral agent.

10The Dialectic of Trust and AutonomyIn Moral Equality, Bioethics, and the Child, Springer Verlag. pp. 105-129. 2016.In this chapter, I will develop a dialectical approach based on autonomy and trust. Every human being's moral identity is characterized by carings, and carings play a decisive role in realizing both trust and autonomy. I will show that moral adultism can be overcome only if the child's carings, rather than the more ambivalent concepts of needs and interests, direct the caregiver's behaviour.

15AutonomyIn Moral Equality, Bioethics, and the Child, Springer Verlag. pp. 87-102. 2016.Until today, ethical theories have implicitly adopted a difference perspective with regard to the child, and, in consequence, theoretical and practical inconsistencies plague child ethics. In this chapter, I analyse inconsistencies in the current debate on autonomy and develop a concept of minimal autonomy that is feasible for healthcare and can be applied to both children and adults.

14FamilyIn Moral Equality, Bioethics, and the Child, Springer Verlag. pp. 73-86. 2016.Families occupy a problematic position within the liberal society. They are networks of intimate, trusting relationships often devoted to the care of dependent human beings; promoting the liberty of their members is not their most important aim. I will emphasize the moral role of the child as truster and of the family as a moral sphere for trusting relationships. I will discuss why and how the family's moral role has been criticized from liberal as well as feminist points of view and suggest a r…Read more

9TrustIn Moral Equality, Bioethics, and the Child, Springer Verlag. pp. 59-71. 2016.The significance of trust for children can hardly be overestimated. Yet, although the number of publications on trust by now is daunting, there is no comprehensive philosophical discussion of child trust. I will show why trust is better suited than the more commonly used concept of care for understanding the moral dimensions of the parent-child relationship.

25The Debate About Moral EqualityIn Moral Equality, Bioethics, and the Child, Springer Verlag. pp. 21-41. 2016.In this chapter, I delineate some of the problems of classical approaches to parenthood. It will become clear how moral adultism has seeped into much of what has been written about childhood ethics. I examine different approaches, including child rights and welfare rights approaches, that attempt to realize the equal moral consideration of the child and show why, in a significant aspect, they fail to achieve this goal. A moral-equality approach should avoid developmentalism and moral adultism, a…Read more

18IntroductionIn Moral Equality, Bioethics, and the Child, Springer Verlag. pp. 3-19. 2016.In a small but picturesque village named Saint-Girons on the majestic French Atlantic coast some 50 miles north of Biarritz, the square in front of the chapel bears a high-flown name which, for many reasons, is particularly instructive for the purpose of this book.

69Das Transplantations-Trilemma als philosophische AufgabeDeutsche Zeitschrift für Philosophie 60 (3): 419-434. 2012.Under the new heading “Philosophie aktuell” topics which are relevant in terms of public, moral, and political discourse will be discussed from a philosophical vantage point. By way of example, the explanatory capacity of philosophical reflection and critique will be demonstrated. The present issue puts the reform of the Transplantation Law under philosophical investigation. Concepts of life and death, in particular that of cerebral death, will be scrutinized. It will be asked whether these conc…Read more

62Reproductive timing. New forms and ambivalences of the temporal optimisation of reproduction and their ethical challengesEthik in der Medizin 35 (1): 43-56. 2023.Definition of the problemThe article addresses the relationship between reproduction, time and the good life. Services offered by reproductive medicine and conceptions of the good life in time influence each other reciprocally. This interaction is characterised by implicit and explicit normative settings and expectations of appropriate temporality.ArgumentsWe first discuss the significance of time for the life course and for parenthood from a sociological and social psychological perspective. 88Healthcare Professionals’ Conflicts When Treating Transgender Youth: Is It Necessary to Prioritize Protection Over Respect?Cambridge Quarterly of Healthcare Ethics 32 (2): 193-201. 2023.Increasingly, transgender minors are seeking medical care such as puberty-suppressing or gender-affirming hormone therapies. Yet, whether these interventions should be performed at all is highly controversial. Some healthcare practitioners oppose irreversible interventions, considering it their duty to protect children from harm. Others view minors, like adults, as transgender individuals who must be protected from discrimination. The underlying ethical question is presented as a problem of prio…Read more

129What can the concept of discrimination contribute to medical ethics?—An analysisEthik in der Medizin 33 (3): 369-386. 2021.Definition of the problem Few concepts in recent ethical debates have enjoyed as much popularity as the concept of discrimination. However, a comparative discussion of the concept, including its conceptual nuances and its ethical significance for health care, has so far been lacking. The aim of this paper is to develop a nuanced understanding of discrimination based on the philosophical and sociological literature against the background of ethically relevant medical and nursing scenarios. Method…Read more

66Moral Equality, Bioethics, and the ChildSpringer Verlag. 2016.Presenting real life cases from clinical practice, this book claims that children can be conceived of as moral equals without ignoring the fact that they still are children and in need of strong family relationships. Drawing upon recent advances in childhood studies and its key feature, the ‘agentic child’, it uncovers the ideology of adultism which has seeped into much what has been written about childhood ethics. However, this book also critically examines those positions that do accord moral …Read more

20NatalityIn Moral Equality, Bioethics, and the Child, Springer Verlag. pp. 45-58. 2016.The children's moral perspective is characterized by natality, the fact that they are born into a world of unchosen relationships. Natality is an anthropological condition which has a profound effect on the moral relationship between children and caregivers and how we conceive of parenthood.
