The theme « Truth and Certainty » is reminiscent of Hegel’s dialectic of prominent in the Phänomenologie des Geistes, but I want to treat it from a different angle in the perspective of the constructivist stance in the foundations of logic and mathematics. Although constructivism stands in opposition to mathematical realism, it is not to be considered as an idealist alternative in the philosophy of mathematics. It is true that Brouwer’s intuitionism, as a variety of constructivism, has idealistic overtones, but my main concern in this paper is located in the mathematical tradition of constructive mathematics from the Greeks to Fermat, Gauss and Kronecker, and from the logical side, in the finitist doctrine of Hilbert and his followers.

This is a lively and clearly written introduction to the philosophy of natural science, organized around the central theme of scientific realism. It has two parts. 'Representing' deals with the different philosophical accounts of scientific objectivity and the reality of scientific entities. The views of Kuhn, Feyerabend, Lakatos, Putnam, van Fraassen, and others, are all considered. 'Intervening' presents the first sustained treatment of experimental science for many years and uses it to give a new direction to debates about realism. Hacking illustrates how experimentation often has a life independent of theory. He argues that although the philosophical problems of scientific realism can not be resolved when put in terms of theory alone, a sound philosophy of experiment provides compelling grounds for a realistic attitude. A great many scientific examples are described in both parts of the book, which also includes lucid expositions of recent high energy physics and a remarkable chapter on the microscope in cell biology

De Platon à Descartes et de Kant à Husserl, les idéalités mathématiques ont constamment été l'objet de l'attention philosophique; pour Platon et Descartes, idéalités discursives et régulatrices, pour Kant et Husserl, idéalités pures et objectives. Chez le dernier, bien que les tentatives inaugurates de philosophie mathématique aient été sévèrement critiquées par un Frege et malgré l'intérêt limité qu'elles ont aujourd'hui pour l'épistémologue des mathématiques, l'idéalité mathématique restera toujours un modèle — au sens d'idéal — épistémologique privilégié. Le Centre des Archives — Husserl de Louvain publiera bientôt, par les soins de H. R. Brennecke de Cologne, un ouvrage réunissant les principaux écrits mathématiques de Husserl — dont la thèse de doctorat sur le calcul des variations écrite sous l'inspiration de Weierstrass, Beiträge zur Variationsrechnung — sous le titre Studia Mathematica. Si Husserl n'a pas pu mener à terme son projet de « Mannigfaltig-keitslehre », théorie des multiplicités — c'est de ce même terme que Cantor avait aussi baptisé sa théorie des ensembles au début — il n'en demeure pas moins que les analyses phénoménologiques ne sont pas dépourvues d'intérêt pour la doctrine de la science contemporaine et peuvent même constituer le langage approprié pour l'épistémologue des sciences naturelles ou sociales. C'est cela même que semble récuser Desanti, du moins pour l'épistémologie mathématique. Disons tout de suite que Desanti se défend mal d'utiliser le langage phénoménologique et s'il le conteste, c'est peut-être qu'il n'est pas parvenu à le dé-construire totalement, selon l'expression de Derrida.

L'ouvrage de M. Bitbol est la suite d'un livre qu'il a consacré à la mécanique quantique et dont j'ai rendu compte dans Dialogue. Il s'agit bien d'une suite naturelle à son tour d'horizon de la problématique philosophique de la mécanique quantique. Mais alors qu'il s'aventurait dans quelques-uns des problèmes techniques de la philosophie quantique dans son premier ouvrage original, il se limite ici à un commentaire, philosophique et jamais technique, d'un ouvrage collectif paru sous sa direction : Physique et réalité en hommage à Bernard d'Espagnat. Or, le texte de l'auteur, qui paraît séparément, est pour l'essentiel un commentaire presque littéral des critiques adressées à d'Espagnat et des réponses qu'il a faites, avec une belle générosité faut-il le dire. Nous devons reconnaître à d'Espagnat la paternité—ce que d'autres n'ont pas manqué de faire—du questionnement philosophique de la mécanique quantique en France. Élève de Louis de Broglie, dont il a retenu la méfiance vis-à-vis la «nouvelle» mécanique quantique, il n'a cessé de défendre un réalisme à découvert des Conceptions de la physique contemporaine jusqu'à Le réel voilé. D'Espagnat, à l'origine physicien des hautes énergies comme d'autres, s'est converti à une philosophie transcendantale de seconde «kantisation», si l'on peut se permettre de déformer le terme de seconde quantisation qui appartient à la mécanique quantique et qui signifie que l'on «quantise» un champ plutôt qu'une particule—la première «kantisation» dans le cas de la mécanique quantique aurait été le fait de Cassirer et de G. Hermann dont on vient de redécouvrir Les fondements philosophiques de la mécanique quantique parus en allemand en 1935 et traduits récemment par L. Soler.

Internal logic is the logic of content. The content is here arithmetic and the emphasis is on a constructive logic of arithmetic (arithmetical logic). Kronecker's general arithmetic of forms (polynomials) together with Fermat's infinite descent is put to use in an internal consistency proof. The view is developed in the context of a radical arithmetization of mathematics and logic and covers the many-faceted heritage of Kronecker's work, which includes not only Hilbert, but also Frege, Cantor, Dedekind, Husserl and Brouwer. The book will be of primary interest to logicians, philosophers and mathematicians interested in the foundations of mathematics and the philosophical implications of constructivist mathematics. It may also be of interest to historians, since it covers a fifty-year period, from 1880 to 1930, which has been crucial in the foundational debates and their repercussions on the contemporary scene.
