This essay draws attention to the question how a strong notion of unconditional responsibility in the face of the other’s mortality is related to the historical experience of a disastrous violence that seems to annihilate not only numerous bodies, lives, identities and histories but, rather, any responsible religio to the other – whether living or dead. It is well known, that Levinas claimed that human responsibility demands not to let the other alone in his death. But if the other is already dead – like numerous others who share the same fate – keeps human responsibility silent, then? And how is this religio of human responsibility related to forms of disastrous violence which seem to deny it?

To be born means to be entrusted to others. On this basis, trust is first and foremost a mode of living with others (even anonymous others) which takes definite shape only when it appears to be weakened, doubtful, or even destroyed. In this case, mistrust raises the question how trust can get restored in order to stabilize social and political relations on which the state rests. In historical perspective, however, we are confronted with a radical desillusionment of trust that raises the question how the state can deserve our trust and how we are to avoid that mistrust reigns. The following considerations seek to make junctions plausible between the ontogenetic basis of trust on the one hand and the political precariousness of trust on the other hand.

Wars and Fatal Illusions of Defeatability as a Threat. Metatheoretical Observations and Desiderata of a Contemporary Philosophy of Martial Violence This essay deals with the question how war threatens us even when peace seems to reign. Refering to Heraklit, Kant, and recent theories of war, the author takes answers to this question into account especially with respect to the problem if it is possible to keep in check illusions which make us believe that one can get rid of enmity by way of 'final solutions'.

In the light of historical experiences of the twentieth century the paper defends the ‘renunciation of the father-figure’ (Paul Ricoeur following Sigmund Freud) as being indispensable for modern politics. The loss of the father must not be compensated for. Rather, it marks the disclosure of the true dimension of the political, in which one is willing to listen to each other even under the maintenance of vertical and not horizontal power relations. In addition, the paper contradicts any attempt to take advantage for theological and identitarian purposes to push an agenda of reinstating in our ‘secular age’ (Charles Taylor) a master who, as a surrogate of the ‘father-figure’, promises to liberate the people from the burden of their freedom.

Proceeding from the current discourse on guilt, blame, and debts this essay discusses three theoretical positions which trace the origin of guilt from debts or derive debts from guilt respectively. In a second step the author relates the corresponding proposals of Nietzsche, Heidegger and Levinas to specifically modern positions maintaining that we owe nothing to others or rather that we are indebted to others for almost everything. The guiding thread of this essay is the question how the notions to owe, moral guilt and economic debts are to be correlated conceptually.

Im Namen homogenisierter Identität widersetzt man sich gegenwärtig jeglichem Versuch, ‚eigene‘ bzw. angeeignete Kultur als in sich heterogen, mit Fremdem transkulturell vermischt zu verstehen. In meinem Beitrag setze ich mich ausgehend von klassischen Beiträgen zur Kulturtheorie mit dieser identitären Versuchung auseinander, um sie vor dem Hintergrund des Befundes verständlich zu machen, dass wir überhaupt nur aus einer unaufhebbaren Welt-Fremdheit heraus Zugang zu kulturellen Lebensformen finden – vorausgesetzt, man nimmt uns auf Dauer in ihnen auf. Dass auf diese Weise jene Fremdheit nicht ‚aufzuheben‘ ist, bedeutet, dass wir niemals eine gewissermaßen ‚restlose’ Enkulturation erfahren, sondern dem Vorkulturellen zutiefst verbunden bleiben. Genau deshalb, so lautet die These, haben wir eine nicht zu tilgende Affinität zu allem Transkulturellen, das man in erster Annährung als dasjenige verstehen kann, was ‚jenseits’ vertrauter Lebensformen liegt und uns zu diesem ‚Jenseits‘ ins Verhältnis setzen kann, weil wir schon in deren ‚Diesseits‘ nie ganz heimisch werden können. Ironischerweise zehrt in dieser Perspektive das Transkulturelle vom Vorkulturellen. Letzteres leugnen die Apologeten des Identitären, indem sie Zerrbilder homogenisierter Zugehörigkeiten feilbieten, die keine innere Unzugehörigkeit, Fremdheit und Distanz mehr zuzulassen scheinen.

Vorrede Die Ethnologie ist in einer beneidenswerten und zugleich bedauernswerten Lage, weil sie im Grunde schon seit Jahrtausenden, nicht erst seit den einschlägigen Reisen und Erzählungen Bartolomé de Las Casas’, Louis Antoine de Bougainville, Johann G. A. Forsters etc. ‒ aus einem riesigen Fundus von Berichten schöpfen kann und muss, die bezeugen, wie bemerkenswert, erstaunlich und ‚interessant‘, aber auch befremdlich, ja abstoßend und widerwärtig Menschen das Leben Anderer erschienen ist. Beneidenswert ist sie im Vergleich zu anderen Sozial- und Kulturwissenschaften in Anbetracht einer Materialfülle, die ihr zunächst scheinbar mühelos und ohne womöglich sachfremde methodologische Vorentscheidungen wie von selbst zugeflossen ist.

Dieser Aufsatz knüpft an die aktuelle Debatte um den sogenannten Posthumanismus an und relativiert die gegen letzteren gerichtete Frage, ob es sich nach wie vor um eine Spielart von ‚Humanismus‘ handelt, entschieden sozialphilosophisch. Zur Diskussion gestellt wird, ob in dieser Debatte nicht weniger die traditionelle anthropologische Leitfrage, was der Mensch sei, auf dem Spiel steht, sondern vielmehr die Frage, wer wir im Verhältnis zueinander sind. Diese Frage legt eine negativistische Methodologie nahe, insofern sie sich stellt, wo entsprechende Antworten fehlen, aber herausgefordert werden.
