    German Idealism Today
    with Markus Gabriel
    De Gruyter. 2017.
This collection of essays provides an exemplary overview of the diversity and relevance of current scholarship on German Idealism. The importance of German Idealism for contemporary philosophy has received growing attention and acknowledgment throughout competing fields of contemporary philosophy. Part of the growing interest rests on the claim that the works of Kant, Fichte, Schelling, Hegel remain of considerable interest for cultural studies, sociology, theology, aesthetics and other areas of…Read more
This collection of essays provides an exemplary overview of the diversity and relevance of current scholarship on German Idealism. The importance of German Idealism for contemporary philosophy has received growing attention and acknowledgment throughout competing fields of contemporary philosophy. Part of the growing interest rests on the claim that the works of Kant, Fichte, Schelling, Hegel remain of considerable interest for cultural studies, sociology, theology, aesthetics and other areas of interest. In the domain of philosophy, the renaissance of innovative readings of German Idealism has taken scholarly debates beyond merely antiquarian perspectives. This renaissance has been a major factor of current efforts to bridge the gap between so-called “analytic” and so-called “continental” philosophy. The volume provides a selection of well-chosen examples of readings that contribute to systematic treatments of philosophical problems. It contains contributions by Markus Gabriel, Robert Pippin, Anders Moe Rasmussen, Sebastian Rödl.

Uses of Fairy Tales in Medical Education
    with Rishi Goyal
    Journal of Medical Humanities 47 (1): 127-140. 2026.
The aim in narrative medicine has been to develop a “narrative competence” towards patients’ illness stories in the clinic through the close reading of literary texts followed by a creative activity. In this article, we suggest adjusting our conception of close reading and enlarging the curriculum by including fairy tales, especially those written by Hans Christian Andersen. We argue on a methodological level that a more affective version of close reading which foregrounds “attunement” can be facilitated by considering enchantment. Fairy tales were, and for many, still are, the first and most important introduction to enchantment as a way of knowing about suffering, loss, and death. A narratological approach to Andersen’s fairy tales that stresses their critique of normative social and gender roles, their interest in symbolic narrative structures, and their focus on universal human suffering and awe, will be of benefit to practitioners, students, and patients.

Narrative Medicine: Trauma and Ethics (edited book)
    with Morten Sodemann
    Vernon Press. 2024.
This new volume repositions narrative medicine and trauma studies in a global context with a particular focus on ethics. Trauma is a rapidly growing field of especially literary and cultural studies, and the ways in which trauma has asserted its relevance across disciplines, which intersect with narrative medicine, and how it has come to widen the scope of narrative research and medical practice constitute the principal concerns of this volume. This collection brings together contributions from established and emerging scholars coming from a wide range of academic fields within the faculty of humanities that include literary and media studies, psychology, philosophy, history, anthropology as well as medical education and health care studies. This crossing of disciplines is also represented by the collaboration between the two editors. Most of the authors in the volume use narrative medicine to refer to the methodology pioneered by Rita Charon and her colleagues at Columbia University, but in some chapters, the authors use it to refer to other methodologies and pedagogies utilizing that descriptor. Trauma is today understood both in the restricted sense in which it is used in the mental health field and in its more widespread, popular usage in literature. This collection aspires to prolong, deepen, and advance the field of narrative medicine in two important aspects: by bringing together both the cultural and the clinical side of trauma and by opening the investigation to a truly global horizon.

The Legacy of Jacobi in Schelling and Kierkegaard
    Kierkegaard Studies Monograph Series 262 (08): 209-223. 2002.
In presenting the key theoretical notions in Jacobi’s philosophical work, this paper shows how these notions are operative in Schellings late philosophy and in Kierkegaard. It is argued that Jacobi’s criticism of Spinozist rationalism is echoed in Schelling’s and Kierkegaard’s criticism of Hegelian speculation as it is shown that Jacobi’s distinction between two different kinds of knowledge, i.e. demonstration and illumination, is also at the very heart of Schelling’s and Kierkegaard’s philosoph…Read more
In presenting the key theoretical notions in Jacobi’s philosophical work, this paper shows how these notions are operative in Schellings late philosophy and in Kierkegaard. It is argued that Jacobi’s criticism of Spinozist rationalism is echoed in Schelling’s and Kierkegaard’s criticism of Hegelian speculation as it is shown that Jacobi’s distinction between two different kinds of knowledge, i.e. demonstration and illumination, is also at the very heart of Schelling’s and Kierkegaard’s philosophy. On this background the article finally discusses some important similarities between Schelling and Kierkegaard, stressing the importance of the concept of the will as well as the relation between negativity and positivity.

Kierkegaard Im Kontext des Deutschen Idealismus (edited book)
    with Axel Hutter
    De Gruyter. 2014.
