Sea-level rise (SLR) is a threat to coastal areas and there is growing interest in how social values, risk perception and fairness can inform adaptation. This study applies these three concepts to an urban community at risk of SLR in Botany Bay, Australia. The study engaged diverse groups of residents via an online survey. Cluster analysis identified four interpretive communities: two groups value work-life balance, are concerned about SLR and would likely engage in collective adaptation. The th…Read more

Bulletin of the John Rylands Library 93 (1): 23-44. 2017.
Rylands Latin MS 164 is one of over forty manuscript books of hours in the John Rylands Library. It was made in France in the middle of the fifteenth century and its extensive, high quality illumination associates its production with the worshop of the so-called Bedford Master. However, it has not been the subject of any sustained published research and consequently the significance of variations in the mise-en-page of the books pages has not been scrutinised. This article focuses on the variati…Read more

    with María Emilia Ismael Simental
Human Review.

    with María Emilia Ismael Simental
Human Review.

The reason which is generally given in the usage-based literature to account for the retention of irregularity in high frequency items during analogical change is entrenchment: a frequently occurring irregular linguistic unit resists analogical levelling because it is highly entrenched in speakers’ mental lexicons through its repeated use. Although previous research similarly suggests that the entrenchment of irregular and regularised forms competing during analogical levelling should be proport…Read more

Cyborg and Religious? Technonature and Technoculture
    Scientia et Fides 4 (1): 295-311. 2016.
We are all aware that our idea of natural/unnatural has been changing over the centuries. According to Donna Haraway, we must exit the maze of dualisms that has marred the relationships between human and non-human nature for centuries. Cyborg is a figure of speech and asymbol, but preeminently a description of our actual being in contemporary technonature. Her idea has been picked up by artists and philosophers and theologians. The cyborgian organism/human and the world cannot be articulated in …Read more

Identity, community and care in online accounts of hereditary colorectal cancer syndrome
with Emily Ross, Tineke Broer, and Sarah Cunningham-Burley
    New Genetics and Society 37 (2): 117-136. 2018.
Sociological literature has explored how shifts in the point at which individuals may be designated as diseased impact upon experiences of ill health. Research has shown that experiences of being genetically “at risk” are shaped by and shape familial relations, coping strategies, and new forms of biosociality. Less is known about how living with genetic risk is negotiated in the everyday and over time, and the wider forms of identity, communities and care this involves. This article explores the…Read more

    Feminist Genealogical Methodologies
    Feminist Theology 21 (2): 126-144. 2013.
This paper describes the multi-methodological approach employed in a partial, situated, contingent and interpretive feminist political analysis of Catholic mothers and daughters. The study draws on a number of sources including transcripts of mother-daughter interviews, autobiographical anecdotes, photographs, music, icons of Catholicism and poetry. It is argued in this paper that a feminist multi-methodological approach is valuable to feminist research as it disrupts the linear and logocentric …Read more

Catholic Mothers and Daughters: Becoming Women
    Feminist Theology 24 (2): 187-205. 2016.
The socio-historical events and libertarian cultural movements of the 1960s and 1970s shaped the Catholic mother-daughter relationship for the women in this feminist genealogical study. This study is based on interviews with 36 Anglo-Australian Catholic women – 13 sets of mothers and daughters – as well as dialogue between my mother and myself about family photographs. Women’s stories of secondary school days tell of the formation of lady-like identities circumscribed through uniform regulations…Read more

    with Antonia Wunderlich
In Dirk Jahn, Alessandra Kenner, David Kergel & Birte Heidkamp-Kergel (eds.), Kritische Hochschullehre: Impulse Für Eine Innovative Lehr- Und Lernkultur, Springer Fachmedien Wiesbaden. pp. 97-112. 2019.

Expanding horizons: Lonergan's philosophy as a guide to PhD program pedagogy
with Carol A. Bova, Donna J. Perry, Nancy S. Morris, and James A. Fain
Historically, research-focused doctoral programs in nursing have used the apprenticeship model to educate and prepare nurse scientists for research careers. The assumption is that students learn best when paired with a faculty member who is working on the same topic. This model works well when there is a stable workforce, adequate funding streams and sufficient faculty with diverse expertise to capture the enthusiasm and varied topics of incoming doctoral students. However, we believe there are …Read more
