In early China, was it correct for a woman to disobey her father, contradict her husband, or shape the public policy of a son who ruled over a dynasty or state? According to the _Lienü zhuan_, or_ Categorized Biographies of Women_, it was not only appropriate but necessary for women to step in with wise counsel when fathers, husbands, or rulers strayed from the path of virtue. Compiled toward the end of the Former Han dynasty (202 BCE-9 CE) by Liu Xiang (79-8 BCE), the _Lienü zhuan_ is the earliest extant book in the Chinese tradition solely devoted to the education of women. Far from providing a unified vision of women's roles, the text promotes a diverse and sometimes contradictory range of practices. At one extreme are exemplars resorting to suicide and self-mutilation as a means to preserve chastity and ritual orthodoxy. At the other are bold and outspoken women whose rhetorical mastery helps correct erring rulers, sons, and husbands. The text provides a fascinating overview of the representation of women's roles in early legends, formal speeches on statecraft, and highly fictionalized historical accounts during this foundational period of Chinese history. Over time, the biographies of women became a regular feature of dynastic and local histories and a vehicle for expressing and transmitting concerns about women's social, political, and domestic roles. The _Lienü zhuan_ is also rich in information about the daily life, rituals, and domestic concerns of early China. Inspired by its accounts, artists across the millennia have depicted its stories on screens, paintings, lacquer ware, murals, and stone relief sculpture, extending its reach to literate and illiterate audiences alike.

This paper contains an exploratory study of networks of activist groups operating versus firms to impact norms on corporate social responsibility. It providessome initial examinations of using webmetrics to trace activist networks and tactics. We conducted an empirical study of an organization that acts like the proverbial “spider in the web” in activist networks in the Netherlands: SOMO, the Centre for Research on Multinational Corporations. Mapping such an organization, in which networks on several themes related to CSR are coordinated, forms a useful entry point for further research.

Researching user experience in smell perception I will contribute to a methodological approach of generating meaning creating knowledge and awareness in a culture of senses, understanding smell as a storying element in myth corresponding with design. In my paper I address images in Homeric language triggering mythical ‘smell scapes’. I examine smell perception in the perspective of narrative elements reflecting interactions of actants and agency in actor networks: Addressing myth as a challenge of narrative framings of two levels, i.e. media in smell and language, I suggest that smell research is not only a way to understanding media (McLuhan), but also to a new way of designing research tools that contribute to cultivate odor perception as a cultural quality of space and time perception.

Studies associating interactions of 5-HTTLPR and life adversities with depression have yielded equivocal results. Studying endophenotypes may constitute a more powerful approach. In the current study, it was assessed whether interactions of 5-HTTLPR with childhood emotional abuse (CEA) and recent negative life events (RNLE) affect possible cognitive endophenotypes of depression, namely, attention-allocation bias and the ability to recognise others' mind states in 215 young adults of North-West European descent. The ability to classify others' negative mind states was found to be increased with increasing RNLE in carriers of low-expressing Serotonin Transporter Linked Polymorphic Region (5-HTTLPR) alleles. Carriers of two low-expressing alleles also preferentially oriented attention towards negative information. Gene-environment interactions were not observed for attention allocation bias. No effects involving CEA were observed. These results suggest that low-expressing 5-HTTLPR alleles may confer increased risk for depression through enhanced recognition of negative facial expressions following RNLE.

ZUSAMMENFASSUNGDass die Frage nach dem, was »Selbstliebe« ist, im Bereich der evangelischen Theologie mit gegensätzlichen Aussagen von entscheidender dogmatischer Relevanz beantwortet wird, das zeigt die Gegenüberstellung der Positionen Karl Barths und Sören Kierkegaards. Barth weist jegliche Selbstliebe als unchristlich zurück. Von einem Christen sei Selbsthingabe verlangt. Nach Kierkegaard hingegen ist solche Hingabe an einen anderen Menschen als Abgötterei abzuweisen.Unter Bezugnahme auf Luthers Christologie und Sakramentenlehre wird deutlich, dass aller Selbst- wie Nächstenliebe unverfügbar und unverzichtbar die Liebe Gottes zugrunde liegt. Sie ist in der Selbsthingabe Gottes in Jesus Christus offenbar geworden und wird in der Taufe dem Täufling zugesprochen. Die heilsnotwendige Selbsthingabe Gottes bis in den Tod kann von keinem Menschen nachgeahmt werden. Wahre Nachfolge in der Liebe Gottes kann nicht durch das Opfer des eigenen Selbst geschehen. Das Selbst, das sich selbst als geliebtes Geschöpf erkennt, ahmt Gottes schöpferische Liebe vielmehr dadurch nach, dass es sich selbst als Gottes geliebtes Geschöpf manifestiert und in der Feier der Sakramente die Gegenwart der Liebe Gottes mit seinem Nächsten teilt. SUMMARYA comparison of the positions of Karl Barth and Sören Kierkegaard plainly shows that the question, pregnant with dogmatic relevance, of what »self-love« is, has been answered in contradictory ways within Protestant Theology. Barth rejects all forms of self-love as unchristian. A Christian is called to self-sacrifice. According to Kierkegaard, however, such sacrifice for another is to be rejected as idolatry.Luther's Christology and his sacramental theology show clearly that all self-love and brotherly love has as its exclusive basis the love of God. God's love has been revealed in his self-sacrifice in Jesus Christ and is communicated in baptism. God's salvific self-sacrifice unto death cannot be imitated by any human. Real discipleship in the love of God cannot be achieved through self-sacrifice. The person who recognises herself as loved by God imitates God's creative love adequately in manifesting herself as God's beloved creature, and by sharing the presence of God's love with her fellow creature in the celebration of the sacraments

The focus of this article is on elderly patients’ and nursing staff perceptions of privacy in the care of elderly patients/residents in five European countries. Privacy includes physical, social and informational elements. The results show that perceptions of privacy were strongest in the UK (Scotland) and weakest in Greece. Country comparisons revealed statistically significant differences between the perceptions of elderly patients and also between those of nurses working in the same ward or long-term care facility. Perceptions of privacy by patients and their nursing staff were quite similar in Finland, Germany and the UK. In contrast, in Greece and Spain these perceptions were different: nurses believed that they took account of their patients’ privacy needs more often than the patients themselves felt this was the case. Among Spanish and UK patients, an association was found between lower levels of independence and comparatively less positive perceptions of privacy. No associations were established between nurses’ perceptions and their demographic factors. The concept of suffering is discussed among those who are cognitively aware and verbally capable to express their suffering. Due to immaturity, preterm infants’ abilities to express suffering are limited. Relieving suffering is an ethical and juridical demand of good nursing care. The purpose of this study is to describe nurses’ perceptions of the suffering of preterm infants. A descriptive qualitative approach was selected. Data were collected from essays written by nurses (n = 19) working in the neonatal intensive care unit. Inductive content analysis guided by the research question was performed. The nurses described individually determined suffering of the preterm infants according to four categories: suffering ruled by maturation, existence of suffering, individual threshold of suffering and interpreting the cues of suffering. Suffering of preterm infants is manifested by population-specific features, emphasising the need to develop sensitive interventions for relieving their suffering

Ethical issues in the care of elderly people have been identified in many countries. We report the findings of a comparative research project funded by the European Commission, which took place between 1998 and 2001. The project explored the issues of autonomy (part I), privacy (part II) and informed consent (part III) in nursing practice. Data were collected from elderly residents/patients (n = 573) and nursing staff (n = 887) in five European countries: Finland, Spain, Greece, Germany and the UK (Scotland). Questionnaires were used as the data collection tool (self-completion questionnaires for staff, structured interviews for the elderly participants). Four basic nursing interventions in the care of elderly people were targeted: hygiene, fluid intake and nutrition, medication, and elimination. The data were analysed statistically. The results indicated differences within all five countries between staff and patient perceptions of autonomy, privacy and informed consent. There were also similar differences between individual countries. Conclusions were reached concerning practice, education and research. The focus of this article is on elderly patients’ and nursing staff perceptions of informed consent in the care of elderly patients/residents in five European countries. The results suggest that patients and nurses differ in their views on how informed consent is implemented. Among elderly patients the highest frequency for securing informed consent was reported in Finland; the lowest was in Germany. In contrast, among nurses, the highest frequency was reported in the UK (Scotland) and the lowest in Finland. In a comparison of patients’ and nurses’ perceptions, nurses had more positive views than patients in all countries except Finland. Patients with less need for nursing interventions in Greece and Spain gave their consent less often. The German and Greek patients were older, and the results also point to an association between this and their lower frequency of giving consent. In Spain, patients who were married or who had a family member or friend to look after their personal affairs were more likely to be included in the group whose consent was sought less often. This article discusses nurses’ and elderly patients’ perceptions of the realization of autonomy, privacy and informed consent in five European countries. Comparisons between the concepts and the countries indicated that both nurses and patients gave the highest ratings to privacy and the lowest to informed consent. There were differences between countries. According to the patient data, autonomy is best realized in Spain, privacy in the UK (Scotland), and informed consent in Finland. For the staff data, the best results tended to concentrate in the UK. The conceptual and methodological limitations of the study are identified and discussed. Implications of the results are divided into three areas: nursing practice, education and research. In practice, the analysis of patients’ values and the ethical sensitivity of nurses are important as part of ethically good care. In nurse education, students should learn to recognize ethical problems, generally and particularly, among vulnerable groups of patients. Multicultural international research is needed in this area.
