In der Philosophie ist man sich heute weitgehend einig, daß das, was man gemeinhin unter dem Stichwort ‘Bewußtsein’ zusammenfaßt, eine Reihe sehr unterschiedlicher Aspekte beinhaltet. Bewußtsein hat zunächst einmal etwas mit Selbstwissen zu tun, d.h. mit der Fähigkeit mancher Wesen, nicht nur ihre Um- welt, sondern auch sich selbst, ihre eigenen Zustände und Handlungen zu reprä- sentieren. Die hier einschlägigen Stichworte heißen deshalb ‘Metarepräsenta- tion’2 und ‘Selbstmodell’. Dabei ist das zweite Stichwort letztlich treffender, da die Repräsentationen der Umwelt und der eigenen Zustände und Handlungen nicht unverbunden nebeneinander stehen, sondern so miteinander verknüpft sein sollten, daß eine Repräsentation des Wesens selbst in seiner Umwelt ent- steht. Nur auf diese Weise kann der Zweck dieser Art von Repräsentationen erreicht werden: die Überwachung und Steuerung der eigenen Handlungen (‘self-monitoring’).

At the start of the 20th century the question of whether life could be explained in purely me- chanical terms was as hotly debated as the mind-body problem is today. Two factions opposed each other: Biological mechanists claimed that the properties characteristic of living organisms could be ex- plained mechanistically, in the way the behavior of a clock can be explained by the properties and the arrangement of its cogs, springs, and weights. Substantial vitalists, on the other hand, maintained that the explanation envisaged by the mechanists was impossible and that one had to postulate a special nonphysical substance in order to explain life.

Unter Berufung auf Aristoteles ist in der neueren Literatur immer wieder die These vertreten worden, die Konklusionen praktische Syllogismen seien keine Sätze, sondern Handlungen. Eine genaue Interpretation der entsprechenden Aristotelesstellen zeigt jedoch, daß nach Aristoteles Handlungen nicht aus bestimmten Prämissen folgen, sondern aus dem Fürwahrhalten dieser Prämissen. Deshalb wird hier vorgeschlagen, praktische Syllogismen als epistemisch-praxeologische Schlüsse im Rahmen einer gemischten Wissens — und Handlungslogik aufzufassen. Wenn man von den normalen Begriffen des Wissens und Handelns ausgeht, ergibt sich bei dieser Interpretation jedoch, daß die Gültigkeit praktischer Schlüsse durchaus fraglich ist.

Wissen kann sich nicht in wahrer Meinung erschöpfen. Das ist ein in der Diskussion um ei- nen adäquaten Wissensbegriff fast einhellig akzeptierter Gemeinplatz. Der Grund dafür ist ein- fach und auf den ersten Blick einleuchtend. Unserem normalen Gebrauch des Wortes „Wissen“ zufolge würden wir von jemandem, der aufgrund bloßen Ratens zu der Überzeugung kommt, daß beim nächsten Spiel die Roulettekugel auf der Zahl 34 liegen bleibt, auch dann nicht sagen, er habe gewußt, daß es so kommen werde, wenn das Ergebnis tatsächlich eintritt. Wir unter- scheiden zufällig wahre Überzeugungen von solchen, die nicht zufällig, sondern z.B. aufgrund sorgfältigen Überlegens zustandegekommen sind. Nur im zweiten Fall sprechen wir von Wis- sen; bloß zufällig wahre Überzeugungen haben keinen Anspruch auf diesen Ehrentitel. „Bloß zufällig wahr“ nennen wir Überzeugungen, die auf eine Weise zustande gekommen sind, die mit ihrer Wahrheit nichts zu tun hat: durch Raten, Vorahnungen, Überredung usw.

For many years some critically engaged German sociologists have challenged Logical Positivism with the criticism that Positivism’s allegedly neutral conception of science in fact supports conservative or even reactionary political movements. This line of criticism is due, at last in part, to the fact that German scientists became acquainted with the positivistic branch of analytical philosophy after World War II almost exclusively through the works of the liberal-conservative K. R. Popper. Popper, however, is by no means representative of all Positivists. There were influential members of the Vienna Circle who saw a direct connection between the aims of the „scientific world view“ and the endeavour to renew the society on the basis of rational, i.e. socialistic, principles. This connection becomes especially clear in the manifesto Wissenschaftliche Weltauffassung − Der Wiener Kreis which was published in 1929 by Carnap, Hahn and Neurath.

Ansgar Beckermann Once, a mind-body theory based upon the idea of supervenience seemed to be a promising alternative to the various kinds of reductionistic physicalism. In recent years, however, Jaegwon Kim has subjected his own brainchild to a very thorough criticism. With most of Kim’s arguments I agree wholeheartedly - not least because they converge with my own thoughts. 2 In order to explain the few points of divergence with Kim’s views, I shall have to prepare the ground a little. In the course of this paper I will therefore do two things: At the start, I will try to sketch the logical topography of the „solution space“ of the problem Kim is concerned with. As a second step, I shall then comment on the concepts of identity, realization and reduction and attempt to show that Kim’s concept of realization is too narrow, because he is still very much in the grip of the traditional view with regard to what it means to show that a property _F _is identical with, or realized by, another property _G_.
