W artykule tym przyjrzę się nieco bliżej wizji poznawania innych umysłów, zaprezentowanej przez Emmanuela Lévinasa. U nieprzygotowanego czytelnika koncepcja ta wywołuje zwykle niemałe zdziwienie. Lévinas twierdzi mianowicie, że kognitywne spotkanie z drugim człowiekiem jest w swej istocie spotkaniem z nieogarnioną nieskończonością i przypomina w tym względzie ni mniej ni więcej, tylko kontakt z istotą boską. Koncepcję tę łączy się zwykle w sposób naturalny z religijnym tłem jego filozofii, pokażę jednak, że droga myślowa, jaka do niej doprowadziła, da się zrekonstruować niezależnie od wszelkich kwestii religijnej wiary bądź teologii. Aby uczynić zrozumiałą jej wewnętrzną logikę, wystarczy uwzględnić filozoficzny kontekst rozważań autora.

In this paper I will address the question of rationalizing mental causation which is involved in the processes of epistemic justification. The main problem concerning mental causation consists in the apparent incompatibility of the three following claims: (i) the subject's mental states (in particular his belief states) are realized by neural states of the subject's brain; (ii) the justifying character of belief transition consists in the fact that there are certain broadly logical relations between the contents of the relevant beliefs; and (iii) all generations of neural states are, at bottom, governed by the purely physical laws. I try to reconciliate the physical necessity of the neural states generation with the logical rationality of the belief transition. Surprisingly enough, it will turn out that, in a sense, each thinking subject is logically perfect. However, in another sense we are exactly as fallible and irrational as our common-sense tells us.

Die Neuausgabe von Franz Brentanos Schriften zur Ethik und Asthetik basiert auf den von ihm zu Lebzeiten veroffentlichten Aufsatzen. Eine systematische Abhandlung zu diesen Gebieten im Sinne eigenstandiger Monographien aus Brentanos Feder existiert leider nicht. Es gibt lediglich Vorlesungsskripte, aus denen ersichtlich wird, wie Brentano Ethik und Asthetik konzipiert und in welchem Zusammenhang sie mit den anderen Teilen seines Werkes, allen voran der Psychologie, stehen. Die hier vorliegenden kurzen Abhandlungen und Vortrage behandeln spezielle Aspekte und Fragen aus dem Bereich der Ethik und der Asthetik und sind auf die jeweilige Leser- bzw. Horerschaft zugeschnitten. Sie konnen allein stehen, konnen aber auch als Exemplifikationen von Brentanos empirisch-analytischer Philosophie betrachtet werden."

The history of twentieth century philosophy is characterised by the gap between analytic and continental philosophy -- even though both have their roots in a tradition referred to as 'Austrian' or 'Central-European' philosophy. The essays in this volume show in historical and systematic studies, how a reassessment of this 'Central-European' tradition can build an interesting bridge between phenomenology and analytic philosophy and, thus, create a new foundation that allows for an original perspective on central problems of philosophy.
