15Kurt Gödel's Philosophical Remarks (Max Phil)In Gabriella Crocco & Eva-Maria Engelen (eds.), Kurt Gödel Philosopher-Scientist, Presses Universitaires De Provence. pp. 33-79. 2016.The authors describe the construction, development and content of Kurt Gödel’s Philosophical Remarks—the Max Phil notebooks—for the first time in detail and giving a thorough technical description of them. The Max Phil notebooks are part of the Nachlass that is handed down to us in the shorthand Gabelsberger. The notebooks start as an intellectual diary and then evolve to be philosophical notebooks that contain an outline of Gödel’s rational metaphysics as well as some of his reflections on logi…Read more

6Eine kurze Geschichte von >Zorn SchamArchiv für Begriffsgeschichte 50 41-73. 2008.>Anger shame< are exemplary emotions in the ancient reflections concerning the relation between emotions, the good and the just as well as the relation between emotions and reason. It is shown that these emotions have a regulative function for the community in the ancient world. But they have also quite an important function for becoming an autonomous self and even for the change in character of a self. It is then shown in interpreting the notions of anger and shame in Augustine's writings in ho…Read more

8Rudolf Carnap und Kurt Gödel: Die beiderseitige Bezugnahme in ihren philosophischen SelbstzeugnissenIn Christian Damböck & Gereon Wolters (eds.), Der Junge Carnap in Historischem Kontext: 1918–1935 / Young Carnap in an Historical Context: 1918–1935, Springer Verlag. pp. 223-242. 2021.Gegenstandes des Aufsatzes ist die gegenseitige Beeinflussung und Bezugnahme von Rudolf Carnap und Kurt Gödel in ihren jeweiligen Selbstzeugnissen während der 20er- bis 40er-Jahre des 20. Jahrhunderts. Nach allem, was wir bisher wissen, bleibt …Read more

For Gödel, the determining influence on the decision to subject his life to such a form of ethics likely came from one of the two men whom he called his teachers in the Grandjean Questionnaire: namely Heinrich Gomperz. It is unlikely, however, that the stimulus for this form of ethics came from Gomperz alone, since although many members of the Vienna Circle ultimately spoke out against this ethical form for the conduct of life, the question of self-perfection and its role in ethics was one…Read more

One will not be able to categorize and understand Gödel’s philosophical notebooks unless one considers them in the context of the tradition of notebook writing. This tradition produced a type of text with specific characteristics. For an appropriate reading of the notes, one should keep in mind those characteristics as well as the function of notebooks for an author’s thinking and for their creative process. This helps to avoid misinterpretations as well as rash (mis)judgments and (mis)readings.

Philosophia Scientiae 17 (1): 167-188. 2013.The search for an answer to the question that constitutes the title has led to some insightful results concerning Kurt Gödel’s critical reception of major philosophical works. It shows how he uses philosophical argumentations of classical authors and turns them into new aspects for his own philosophical argumentation. In the case at hand a classical argument by Aristotle for the immaterialness of the soul is used by Gödel in order to add considerations to his own reasoning for the inexhaustibili…Read more
