I am an Associate Professor of Philosophy in the School of Social Sciences at UWE Bristol. My research focuses on political philosophy, phenomenology, and applied ethics.
My first monograph, "The Risk of Freedom" (2016), explored the political phenomenology of Czech philosopher and dissident Jan Patočka. I have also co-edited several collections on related themes, including "Thinking after Europe" (2016), "Phenomenology and the Idea of Europe" (2017), and "European Solidarity: Interdisciplinary Perspectives" (2023). My work has appeared in leading academic journals such as the Journal of Medical Ethics (2023), Journal of the British Society for Phenomenology (2023, 2021, 2016), Critical Review of International Social and Political Philosophy (2021), Philosophy Now (2021), Phenomenology and Mind (2021), Studies in East European Thought (2020), Metodo (2018), Filosofický Časopis (2018), and Horizon (2016).
My principal research at present develops a problem-based approach to political solidarity, which forms the foundation of my forthcoming monograph under contract with Oxford University Press. I also contribute to the development of ethical frameworks for data access and governance through my work with the DRAGoN research centre at UWE.
From 2020 to 2024, I designed and led the BA (Hons) Philosophy programme at UWE, which is currently ranked first in the UK for student satisfaction by the Guardian University Guide. I teach across a range of modules, including social and political philosophy, decolonial thought, and film-philosophy. I have also recently developed a new professional course on Critical Thinking, scheduled to launch in 2026, aimed at professionals, students, and external partners.
Beyond UWE, I serve as co-Editor-in-Chief of Future Humanities, an open-access journal published by Wiley, which highlights innovative and critical approaches in the humanities across areas such as digital transformation, health ethics, climate change, and new media.
Alongside my academic work, I am passionate about literature and film. I co-founded Thought in Action, a long-standing partnership between UWE Philosophy, Politics & IR and Bristol’s Watershed cinema, which creates opportunities for public engagement and dialogue between philosophy and contemporary culture.
