Since 2006 I have held the Melden Chair in Moral Philosophy in the Philosophy Department at the University of California, Irvine, where I am a Distinguished Professor. I've published monographs on the nature of social phenomena such as group languages, collective actions, collective beliefs, and social conventions (On Social Facts, 1989) , on the problem of political obligation (A Theory of Political Obligation: Membership, Commitment, and the Bonds of Society, 2006), and on rights (Rights and Demands: A Foundational Inquiry, 2018).
