In his first critique Kant shows why ideas in contrast to categories do not refer to adequate empirical objects. How can he claim at the same time that ideas be indispensable? Kant's answer to this problem is ambiguous. In this article I demonstrate that neither his attempt of a transcendental deduction of ideas nor his confirmation that ideas are useful for systematical unity of knowledge is convincing. The only solution is: a foundation of ideas by empirical knowledge in relation to its systematical form. Finally I will point out that all this is not possible without the aid of practical reason

From the early 1790s until after the turn of the century, a very productive but also controversial exchange took place between Reinhold and Fichte. Though many key aspects of post-Kantian philosophy were discussed, the philosophical confrontation between Reinhold and Fichte is most instructive for the understanding of post-Kantian philosophy. The exchange started when Fichte published his verdict on Reinhold's Elementarphilosophie and disapproved of its fundamental principle. In 1794 Fichte challenged Reinhold by presenting his Wissenschaftslehre. Reinhold was not convinced of Fichte's foundation of philosophy at first, but announced that he accepted the Wissenschaftslehre in 1797. While Reinhold and Fichte officially collaborated in the following three years, tensions concerning fundamental questions were still present. When Reinhold adopted Rational Realism, his relation to Fichte deteriorated and the exchange between the two finally ended. The contributions in the present collection focus on the central systematic issues at the different stages of the confrontation between Fichte and Reinhold, thereby illuminating questions that are essential to the understanding of the evolution of post-Kantian German philosophy.

In his treatment of a Kantian concept of moral freedom, Schiller argues for two kinds of freedom: freedom in the spirit of autonomous practical reason and freedom in which man is considered a mixed (sensual and rational) being. It is apparent that Schiller is on a Reinholdian path. He follows Reinhold’s theory of free will in conceiving of moral freedom primarily as the capacity to decide between the material drive as a sensible, self-interested drive and the formal drive as a rational, unselfish drive. But it is also obvious that Schiller modifies Reinhold’s results in order to obtain a concept of aesthetic freedom. This project is important in view of a deeper understanding of the concept of aesthetic consciousness but is of little use in achieving a better understanding of the concept of moral freedom.

Die Philosophie Karl Leonhard Reinholds (1757-1823) findet heute vermehrt Beachtung. Während dieser Denker lange Zeit als Popularisator Kants, als Vorläufer Fichtes oder als tatsachenphilosophischer Antipode Schellings und Hegels wahrgenommen wurde und gemeinhin im Ruf eines unsteten und unselbständigen Geistes stand, ist seit einigen Jahrzehnten eine Gegentendenz feststellbar: Reinholds Denkentfaltung wird zunehmend in ihrem gesamten Umfang sowie als eigenwilliger und innovativer Ansatz innerhalb der postkantischen Systemphilosophie zur Kenntnis genommen. Mehr und mehr wird anerkannt, dass Reinhold entscheidende Anstöße zur Entstehung des deutschen Idealismus gegeben und diese Strömung zugleich auf der Grundlage von Einsichten, die in die Richtung der Phänomenologie und Sprachphilosophie des 20. Jahrhunderts weisen, kritisiert hat. Die in diesem Band vereinigten Beiträge gehen auf die I. Internationale Reinhold-Tagung zurück, die vom 14. bis 18. März 1998 in Bad Homburg stattgefunden hat. Sie geben systematische Fragestellungen und entwicklungsgeschichtliche Kontexte aus Reinholds kantischer Phase der Elementarphilosophie, aus der Periode seiner Zusammenarbeit mit Fichte und Jacobi sowie aus seiner sprachphilosophisch orientierten Spätzeit wieder. Alles in allem spiegeln sie das gegenwärtige Bedürfnis, Reinhold zu entdecken, sein Denken und Schaffen in seinen Wandlungen und in seiner thematischen Breite aufzuarbeiten und nachzuvollziehen. Zudem sind sie repräsentativ für die aktuell bestehenden vielfältigen Zugänge zu diesem produktiven Philosophen.

Bondeli shows that Schiller’s reading of Kant’s critical philosophy was since 1787 guided by Reinhold and that Schiller’s own philosophical-aesthetic thinking after 1790 was influenced by Reinhold’s post-Kantian system of Elementary Philosophy, which in its practical part contains a theory of aesthetic pleasure as well as a drive theory and a doctrine of free will. Furthermore, Bondeli demonstrates that after 1789 Reinhold and Schiller began a fruitful discussion on an authentic Kantian concept of morality and on the role which aesthetic reason can play in this realm. The author points out that in this context Reinhold criticised an ethics of benevolence, which Schiller advocated in his second dissertation of 1780, and that Reinhold disagreed with Schiller’s attempt to elevate the pleasure we derive from tragic objects to an effective means of promoting moral behaviour. A final relevant result is that Schiller himself approximated a Kantian moral standpoint but nonetheless defended, against Kant and Reinhold, the primacy of an aesthetic kind of freedom.

The paper explores Karl Leonhard Reinhold’s remarkable philosophical turn from 1801, in which he defends a system of Rational Realism centred on the insight that the concept of thinking is the only appropriate starting point for philosophising. Reinhold does not consider the faculty of thinking solely to be distinct from the faculty of intuiting anymore. Rather, he emphasises that thinking is not at all to be understood as representing, which is first and foremost to say: it is by no means based on the relation between subject and object. By introducing this distinction, Reinhold intends to keep thinking free from connotations of the activity of thinking and the thinking subject. Instead, thinking is to be understood in the sense of a structure of thought and as objective thinking. At the same time, this distinction is supposed to express that thinking is not primarily thinking about an object. According to Reinhold, we can only speak of thinking about an object when it comes to the level of the application of thinking, and not at the level of thinking itself. This corresponds with Reinhold’s view that thinking is to be understood as a structure of thought which is more original than the manifestations of thinking in its basic elements “concept”, “judgment” and “inference”.

Die Begriffe «Vorstellung, Denken, Sprache» umreißen durchgehende Themen der Philosophie Karl Leonhard Reinholds. Steht «Vorstellung» zentral für Reinholds kantische Phase der Elementarphilosophie der 1790er-Jahre, so erweisen sich «Denken» und «Sprache» als Schlüsselbegriffe seines nach 1800 einsetzenden Philosophierens im Geiste eines sich als neue Konzeption von Logik, später auch Projekt der Synonymik verstehenden und gezielt mit dem damaligen transzendentalen und spekulativen Idealismus konkurrierenden rationalen Realismus. Der vorliegende Band nimmt diese Sequenzen auf und legt den Schwerpunkt auf diverse Ausprägungen von Reinhold realistischer Denkentfaltung. Behandelt werden sowohl systematologische, logische, wahrheitstheoretische und sprachphilosophische Fragestellungen von Reinholds späteren philosophischen Hauptbeiträgen als auch bleibende und neu hinzugekommene Auseinandersetzungen Reinholds mit Kant, Fichte, Schelling, Hegel, Herbart und Herder. Komplettiert wird der Band, der nicht zuletzt der weiteren Erforschung der Philosophie Kants und des Deutschen Idealismus dienen soll, mit Ergänzungen und Korrekturen zur Bibliographie der Schriften von Karl Leonhard Reinhold ab dem Jahre 1804.

Au contraire, soucieux de la realisation de la liberte dans le monde phenomenal, Fichte a tente de redefinir les termes d'une philosophie pratique, suscitant une interrogation radicale sur la nature du sujet et des principes en philosophie. Les etudes rassemblees dans cet ouvrage montrent l'enjeu de cette entreprise pour nos contemporains, dans les domaines les plus concrets de la politique, du droit et de l'histoire.

Holderlins philosophische Reflexionen, in denen er fur ein "Seyn schlechthin" als erstes Prinzip der Philosophie argumentiert, werden gemeinhin unter Berucksichtigung von Kant, Fichte, Schiller und Hegel interpretiert. Martin Bondeli dagegen vertritt die Ansicht, dass es fur ein angemessenes Verstandnis von Holderlin insbesondere auch das Aufklarungs- und Prinzipiendenken Karl Leonhard Reinholds einzubeziehen gilt. Vieles spricht dafur, dass Holderlin wahrend seiner Ausbildungsjahre auf Reinholds geschmackstheoretische Beitrage aufmerksam wurde und im Einklang mit diesen seine Theorie einer Totalvorstellung entwickelte. Holderlins Betonung der "Rezeptivitat des Stoffs", seine Rucksichtnahme auf ein "Factum des Bewuatseins" sowie sein aufklarerisches Ideal einer moralisch-asthetischen und religiosen Gemeinschaft zeugen deutlich davon, dass er mit Reinholds Elementarphilosophie und den Gedanken seiner Schuler vertraut war.
