Prior to his current position at Lund University he has held positions as Professor of Philosophy at the University of British Columbia (1987-2022) and Gothenburg University (2015-2017). He also taught at a number of other distinguished British and American philosophy departments, including Cambridge, Virginia, Stanford, Pittsburgh, and UNC Chapel Hill.
He holds a PhD from Cambridge University (1986), where his supervisor was Professor Sir Bernard Williams.
