My doctoral degree (ABD) is being taken through the University of Helsinki and my research largely focuses on medical ethics, bioethics and disability. Given that I was born and Educated in The United Kingdom; now live in Alberta, Canada; and my institutional affiliation is the University of Helsinki... in Finland -- the usual conference icebreaker "So, where are you from", thus has a somewhat complicated answer!
After high school, I completed a journeyman apprenticeship in diesel engineering, completed seven years of post-secondary study, and later branched out to operate independent ventures in agriculture and logistics. I completed my BA(Hons.) and MA in Philosophy at the University of Lethbridge in Canada.
I am now investing life skills and experiences received through a wide and varied background into an academic career in Philosophy. My Master's thesis -- entitled 'The Picture Theory of Disability' -- presents an entirely new model of disability which focusses on the adverbial nature of disability; this model is also intended as a heuristic for those whose work intersects disability. My PhD investigates the practical application of the Picture Theory of Disability to contentious issues in disability such as sex and disability, and healthcare economics, and Inclusion. My broader research interests include personal identity, virtual companions (ethics of AI), social and political philosophy, Hume, and first contact (yeah -- the alien kind)!
In addition to researching for my PhD, I have also taught in various institutions world-wide; I most recently taught philosophy, research methodology, and logic at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology as part of their CORE Education Program and shall be teaching at the University of Calgary this summer.
For fun, I enjoy reading Sir Terry (Pratchett), watching film noir, and listening to music (anything from prog rock to Wagner); I also irrevocably betrothed to Land Rovers (I'm on number 49 and have a YouTube channel devoted to my experiences with them). In 2015 I founded the Kilt-up 4 Cancer campaign; a campaign designed to increase the awareness of male specific cancers. The campaign was a huge success and spin-offs from the campaign are still ongoing world-wide. On a more personal level, my favourite colour is purple, I am a huge Trekkie, and I believe melted cheese to be an aberration!
