His doctoral research explored the interplay between painting and moving images, contributing significantly to the academic discourse on visual arts. In recognition of his high-quality academic output during his doctoral studies, Yang was awarded the Best Postgraduate Student Work Award by the Portuguese Association of Moving Image Researchers in 2024.
Yang’s scholarly work includes notable publications such as “The Fallacy of Self-Referencing Images: The Use of Ambiguous Characters in Moving Images through the Form of Painting” (2021), “Projection of Multiple Fantasies: De-subjectivity of Images in Long Day’s Journey into Night” (2022), “Metaphors for Puzzles Time and Dreams: Ambiguous Narratives in Kaili Blues” (2023), and “Deceptive Retrospective Narrative Strategy and Synchronistic Prerequisite: Case Study on The Design of Impossible Puzzles” (2023).
He has actively participated in international conferences, presenting papers like “Contactless Guidance: An Analysis of the Visual Symbols on Covid-19 Posters” at the Ninth Congress of the International Association of Societies of Design Research (2022) and “Space or Hyperspace? The Stage Design of Kunqu Opera Restores the Inner Experience of Jiangnan Gardens” at the (IN)TANGIBLE HERITAGE(S) conference (2022). Yang's work on "Shots Dialogue and Scenes: A Study of the Development of Embedding Patterns in Film Narrative" was presented at the IV Congreso Internacional de formación permanente Nodos del Conocimiento in 2024.
His creative achievements have been recognized globally, with nominations and finalist positions at prestigious film festivals including the Short to the Point International Film Festival (2017), Barcelona Planet Film Festival (2017), Hollywood Screenings Film Festival (2018), and Roma Cinema Doc (2017). In 2023, Yang’s work was selected in the 18° EDITION 23.24 Arte Laguna Prize, and in 2024, he was awarded a residency at the Bilpin International Ground for Creative Initiatives (BigCi).
Yang is proficient in Chinese, English, and Italian, and is an active member of the Associação de Investigadores da Imagem em Movimento (AIM) in Lisbon, serving from 2023 to 2026. His current projects include “Nel Pomeriggio – Daydreaming Seagulls Flowing River” in Bilpin, Australia, and “The Fantastic Journey of Kazania” in Kazan, Russia, both slated for 2024.
