Hegel’s Interpretation of the Liar Paradox
    History and Philosophy of Logic 43 (2): 105-128. 2021.
In his Lectures on the History of Philosophy, Hegel develops a subtle analysis of Megarian paradoxes: the Liar, the Veiled Man and the Sorites. In this paper, we focus on Hegel's interpretation of...

    Introduction. Logic and Politics
    History and Philosophy of Logic 45 (1): 1-3. 2024.
The aim of this special issue is to explore the intersections of logic, intended as the formal science of valid consequence, and politics, the practical science of associated life. The analyses here provided deal with the theme in two ways: by considering what logic can do for politics, so proposing possible formalizations of political arguments, or using logical notions and tools to interpret political facts and problems; by considering what politics can do for logic, so examining how logical c…Read more

    The Blushing Liar
    Philosophia: International Journal of Philosophy (Philippine e-journal) 21 (2): 252-266. 2020.
Suppose a person blushes iff what she says is false and she says: ‘I am blushing’. If she blushes, she doesn’t, and if she doesn’t, she does. This Blushing Liar (BL) is a new paradox, similar in some respects to the Pinocchio Paradox (PP): Pinocchio’s nose grows iff he says some falsity, and he says: ‘my nose is growing’. Both paradoxes involve physical properties, and both, supposedly, confirm the existence of metaphysical dialetheias (see Eldridge-Smith 2011). In the paper, we note first that …Read more

Gap theory and glut theory are two dominant strategies in the treatment of paradoxes. The paper shows they can be profitably combined. Given the Liar’s sentence ‘L’ which says ‘‘not L’ is true’, there are reasons to say that ‘L and not L’ is true, but this does not mean that ‘L’ as such or ‘not L’ are separately true. We have two untrue sentences (‘L’ and ‘not L’) for a true conjunction (‘L and not L’): two gaps for one glut. This interpretation satisfies the program of conjunctive paraconsisten…Read more

    Was Heidegger an Analytic Philosopher?
International Journal of Philosophical Studies 1-13. forthcoming.
Casati’s book Heidegger and the Contradiction of Being (2022) is read as a valuable contribution to the enterprise of removing the residual and disturbing aspects of the old analytic-continental divide. After a presentation of what I think are the main contents of the book, I present a very brief account of Heidegger’s view, focusing on three themes that Casati tends to underrate: the overcoming of metaphysics, the hermeneutical approach to the problem of Being, the question of philosophical sty…Read more

From a Continental Point of View: The Role of Logic in the Analytic-Continental Divide
    International Journal of Philosophical Studies 9 (3): 349-367. 2001.
My discussion addresses the differences between analytic and continental philosophy concerning the use of logic and exact reasoning in philosophical practice. These differences are mainly examined in the light of the controversial dominance of Hegel's concept of logic (and theory of concept) in twentieth-century continental philosophy. The inquiry is developed in two parts. In the first (Sections 1-2), I indicate some aspects of the analytic-continental divide, pointing to the role that the topi…Read more

Metodi e tecniche filosofiche [Philosophical methods and techniques]
    la Società Degli Individui 21 127-144. 2004.
Esistono metodi filosofici?
    Teoria 25 (1): 25-60. 2005.
The article tries to outline a general theory of context, by answering four questions: 1.why the concept of context is important? 2. what is usually meant by this term? 3. which metaphysical reasons have led to the relevance of context, in any tendency of contemporary philosophy? 4. which are the reasons, limits and mistakes of negative contextualisms? The basic idea is that the concept of context is a good opportunity, more than a thread or limit, for philosophical theory.

Two in one: contradictory Christology without gluts?
    Asian Journal of Philosophy 3 (1): 1-27. 2024.
The central thesis of JC Beall’s paraconsistent Christology is that Christ, being human and divine, is a contradictory being, and a rational Christology can accept it, since logic nowadays does not exclude the possibility of true contradictions. In this paper, I move from Beall’s theory and I present an alternative view. I quote seven statements of the so-called ‘Athanasian Creed’ which synthesizes the results of conciliar Christology. The aim of the Creed is to combat monophysitism by stressing…Read more

The Birth of Logic Out of the Spirit of Democracy
    History and Philosophy of Logic 45 (1): 58-69. 2024.
This paper advances a version of the theory whereby logic had deep origins in democracy, by re-reading Gorgias’ Encomium of Helen. Democracy, ‘the government by debate’, called political (and scientific) attention to the inferential abilities of citizens and to politicians’ ability of taking advantage of them. Sophists, in particular, discovered that people’s inferences follow constant repeatable forms, that these forms have impact on choices and decisions concerning public good, and then by dom…Read more

A new idea of ‘contradictory Christology’ has been recently advanced by JC Beall (The contradictory Christ. Oxford University Press, Oxford, 2021a). This paper does not enter the debate whether Christ double nature instantiates a contradiction or does not. It aims to point out a possible view about the Christological problem similar to Beall’s view but more focused on the metaphysical consequences of admitting a treatment of the Christological paradox in dialetheic terms, as a case of ‘true cont…Read more

The Responsibility of the Philosopher (edited book)
    with William McCuaig
    Cambridge University Press. 2010.
Over the course of his career, Gianni Vattimo has assumed a number of public and private identities and has pursued multiple intellectual paths. He seems to embody several contradictions, at once defending and questioning religion and critiquing and serving the state. Yet the diversity of his life and thought form the very essence of, as he sees it, the vocation and responsibility of the philosopher. In a world that desires quantifiable results and ideological expediency, the philosopher becomes…Read more
