Prof. Nicla Vassallo (Porto Maurizio-Imperia, 1963) studied advanced philosophy at King’s College London – University of London. Prof. Nicla Vassallo (Porto Maurizio-Imperia, 1963) studied advanced philosophy at King’s College London – University of London. After award of her Ph.D. in Philosophy of Science, she was appointed Research Fellow and then Researcher. In 2002 she qualified as Associate Professor of Logic and Philosophy of Science (Idoneità da Professore Associato in Logica e Filosofia della Scienza) at the University of Catania, and then in 2004 as Full Professor of Theoretical Philosophy (Idoneità da Professore Ordinario in Filosofia Teoretica) at the University of Bergamo. From 2003 to 2008 she was Visiting Professor at the University Vita–Salute, Milan, where she lectured on Epistemology in the Psychology Faculty. Since 2005 she has been a Full Professor (Professore Ordinario) in the Department of Philosophy (now Dafist) at the University of Genova. There she has taught Philosophical Propaedeutics, Philosophy of Knowledge and Epistemology. She now teaches Theoretical Philosophy and is part of the teaching staff of the Doctoral Programme in Philosophy called “Fino”, the Consortium of more Universities (Genova, Pavia, Piemonte Orientale, Torino). She is also Associated Researcher Isem/CNR, Italy, and part of Alumni King's College London, U.K.
In recent years, Nicla Vassallo has been responsible for seven research projects for the CNR (National Research Council). She works mainly in the area of Analytic Philosophy. Her primary research and teaching areas are Epistemology, Metaphysics, Feminist Filosophy, as well as Gender Studies.
Nicla Vassallo has written more than one hundred and fifty articles in Italian and in English that have appeared in philosophical journals, edited books, conference proceedings, and encyclopedias, and has published twelve books, edited four others, and co–edited eight more. Her latest sole–authored works are “Per sentito dire. Conoscenza e testimonianza” (Feltrinelli, Milano 2011), Conversazioni (Mimesis Edizioni, Milano 2012), “Il matrimonio omosessuale è contro natura: falso!” (Laterza, Roma-Bari 2015), “Breve viaggio tra scienza e tecnologia, con etica e donne” (Orthotes, Napoli-Salerno 2015), and “Non Annegare: Meditazioni sulla conoscenza e sull’ignoranza” (Mimesis, Sesto San Giovanni 2019); her latest co–authored works are “Piccolo trattato di epistemologia” (Codice Edizioni, Torino 2010); “Frege on Thinking and Its Epistemic Significance” (Lexington–Rowman & Littlefield 2015); “Contextualism, Factivity and Clousure. Spring 2020 & go on” (Mimesis Edizioni, Sesto San Giovanni 2021). In the past she did some tarnslations from English to Italian.
Nicla Vassallo has given talks in many of the most important Italian Universities (Ancona, Bergamo, Brescia, Bologna, Cagliari, Catania, Firenze, Genova, Messina, Milano Bocconi, Milano Cattolica, Milano San Raffaele, Milano Statale, Padova, Pisa, Reggio Emilia, Roma La Sapienza, Roma Tre, Salerno, Sassari, Torino, Trieste, Trento, Urbino, Venezia) and abroad in France, Denmark, Great Britain, Greece, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey; as a co–speaker in Canada, Cyprus, Germany, Finland, Ireland, Portugal, Romania, and Usa.
She has worked and is woking on human right campaigns since the 1990s, with different Italian Institution (i.e. Fondazione Onda, Fondazione Nilde Iotti, Rete Lenford) for women’s rights especially violence against women and for LGBT persons. In this regard, some of her “travel companions”: Giovanni Bachelet, Marzio Barbagli, Remo Bodei, Massimo Cacciari, Anna Canepa, Lella Costa, Franco Grillini, Vittorio Lingiardi, Giacomo Marramao, Melania Mazzucco, Rossella Panarese, Stefano Rodotà, Chiara Saraceno, Carla Signoris, Delia Vaccarello. Among other things, Together with some intellectuals she signed the “Manifesto per un’Europa di Progresso!”, based on the principles of freedom, democracy, knowledge, and solidarity, promoted by Carlo Bernardini and others intellectual and scientists. She supported the candidacy of Ginevra Bompiani for the European elections of “La sinistra” party. Nicla Vassallo irregularly contributes to the cultural pages of various newspapers, magazines and blogs. She wrote the obituary of Rita Levi Montalcini for “Sapere”.
