Die neoaristotelische Tugendethik ist der Versuch, die klassische ethische Theorie des Aristoteles für aktuelle Fragen der praktischen Philosophie fruchtbar zu machen. Deren Vertreterinnen und Vertreter setzen dabei auf ein Erklärungsmodell, das Tugenden als situationsübergreifende Charaktermerkmale und intellektuelle Dispositionen, deren Einübung uns Menschen als rationale Wesen von Natur aus zukommt, in sein Zentrum stellt. Im Zentrum des Ansatzes steht die Behauptung, dass es notwendigerweise zu unserer Natur bzw. zur menschlichen Spezies gehöre, ein tugendhaftes und von der praktischen Vernunft geleitetes Leben zu führen. Als eine besondere Form des ethischen Naturalismus grenzt sich die neoaristotelische Tugendethik damit nicht nur von alternativen Begründungsformen normativer Ethik wie Deontologie und Konsequentialimus ab, sondern auch von anderen in diesem Handbuch versammelten, vorzugsweise non-naturalistischen und nicht-aristotelischen Tugendethikkonzeptionen. Der vorliegende Beitrag verfolgt neben der Vermittlung von Überblickswissen das Ziel, den genauen historisch-systematischen Ort der neoaristotelischen Tugendethik zu bestimmen und dabei sowohl Grenzen als auch Perspektiven für ihre Weiterentwicklung aufzuzeigen.

In this paper I give an overview about the general implications of issues of human nature within the field of human enhancement, especially paediatric neuro-enhancement. The first section of my contribution deals with a certain intertwining of human enhancement and the intrinsic claims of human nature showing that the concept of human nature still plays a crucial role in the debate on human enhancement. Subsequently, I take a step towards analysing of several childhood-related influences on those claims of human nature. After that, my aim is to validate the view that paediatric neuro-enhancement is a special case of human enhancement that falls under the same normative criteria as “normal enhancement”, requiring a special contextual awareness to get along with it ethically. Methodically, my intention is to draw on naturalistic approaches, which argue that our human nature is not a “mixed bag” but seems to be wholly constituted by its species-related characteristics. Against this backdrop, I finally hope to give rise to the view that paediatric neuro-enhancement is no part of a countable set of therapeutic practices prescribed by the life form and its natural goodness.

This book features many of the leading voices championing the revival of Neo-Aristotelian Ethical Naturalism in contemporary philosophy. It addresses the whole range of issues facing this research program at present. Coverage in the collection identifies differentiations, details standpoints, and points out new perspectives. This volume answers a need: AN is quite new to contemporary philosophy, despite its deep roots in the history of philosophy. As yet, there are many unanswered questions regarding its relation to contemporary views in metaethics. It is certainly not equivalent to dominant naturalistic approaches to metaethics in Anglophone philosophy. Indeed, it is not obviously incompatible with some approaches identified as nonnaturalistic. Further, there are controversies regarding the views of the first wave of virtue revivalists. The work of G.E.M. Anscombe and Philippa Foot is frequently misunderstood, despite the fact that they are important figures in the contemporary revival. This volume details a robust approach to ethics by situating it within the context of human life. It will help readers to better understand how AN raises deep questions about the relation of action and its evaluation to human nature. Neo-Aristotelians argue that something like the traditional cardinal virtues, practical wisdom, temperance, justice and courage, are qualities that perfect human reason and desire.

Als eine Form des anthropologischen Naturalismus erhält der aristotelische Naturalismus eine immer größer werdende Bedeutung sowohl im Kontext der angewandten Ethik als auch im Hinblick auf die Beantwortung religionsphilosophischer und kulturanthropologischer Fragestellungen. Angesichts der globalen Herausforderung durch den biotechnologischen Fortschritt und der notwendigen Anerkennung natürlicher Wachstumsgrenzen werden systematische Antworten auf Fragen wie „Welches Verhältnis besteht zwischen moralischen und natürlichen Eigenschaften?“ oder „Was ist die Natur des Menschen aus moralischer Perspektive?“ immer dringlicher.

This paper is referring to Fichte’s ambivalent notion of nature. For Fichte, nature is something that needs to be formed. This formability is an evidence of the imperfection, even depravity of an unformed and therefore unfree nature. Fichte seems to allude indirectly on Martin Luther and the Reformation tradition. Accordingly, nature – which is in itself evil or will become evil – is a state from which men had to step out. The affinity to Rousseau’s picture of nature is obvious. Finally, the article asks for the position of Fichte’s notion of nature in the philosophy of German Idealism. At a turning point Schelling tries to explain that nature is something that can be understood as a self-integrating concept. In dem Beitrag wird der Versuch unternommen, den vieldeutigen Naturbegriff Fichtes zu bestimmen. Es soll gezeigt werden, dass Fichte Natur vorrangig als etwas versteht, das »gebildet« werden muss. Diese Bildbarkeit zeugt, so die These, dabei von der Vorstellung einer depravierten, d. h. ungebildeten und damit auch unfreien Natur, wobei Fichte hier mutatis mutandis auf Luther und die reformatorische Tradition zurückzugreifen scheint. Dieser Traditionslinie folgend ist Natur etwas, das als an sich böse oder als böse geworden eingeschätzt wird, d. h. sie wird als ein Zustand bewertet, aus dem man zur Einlösung des Freiheitanspruches notwendigerweise heraustreten müsse. Hierbei wird u. a. auch die Nähe Fichtes zu Rousseaus Naturverständnis deutlich. Schließlich fragt der Beitrag nach dem generellen Ort von Fichtes Naturbegriff innerhalb der philosophischen Entwicklung des Deutschen Idealismus, die mit Schelling eine Kehrtwende erlebt, infolgedessen die Einkehr in eine eigentlich mit Hegel endgültig hinter sich gelassene Natur wieder möglich wird.

After that, my aim is to validate that particular enhancements (e.g. neuro-enhancement) fall under the same normative criteria as “normal enhancement”, only requiring a special contextual awareness to co-exist with it ethically. Methodically, my intention is to draw on quasi-naturalist approaches, which argue that our nature as humans is not a “mixed bag”, but seems to be wholly constituted by its species-related characteristics. As a result, we can state that our evaluations of living beings or life forms, which are also evaluations of our methods of medical treatments and of our ethical attitudes, depend on our picture of human nature.

This paper illuminates the explanatory role of vagueness und species membership against the background of scientific developments in recent stem cell research. With the help of the Neo-Aristotelian concept of “life form naturalism” ontologically vague entities such as stem cells, all above induced pluripotent stem cells (iPS), could be described as necessary constituents for the correct sorting and naming of natural processes and its bearers. Furthermore this specific assessment allows drawing some important ontological and ethical consequences.
