The philosophical and theological tradition of virtue ethics has long remained ambivalent toward war and peace. On the one hand, it affirms military virtues such as obedience and courage as necessary for survival in conditions of conflict. On the other hand, it upholds pacifist virtues – patience, prudence, forgiveness, tolerance, and love – that appear committed to the unconditional rejection of violence. This essay seeks to resolve that tension by identifying a higher order of virtue that emerges when we consider the nature of war and the purposes guiding the exercise of virtue within it. Drawing on a Thomistic framework, I argue that military and pacifist virtues can be properly integrated only within the normative logic of just war. Yet the argument goes further: the logic of just war itself becomes intelligible only when embedded in an agonistic theory of love oriented toward the ultimate goal of peace. In this way, peace remains the final horizon, without requiring full adherence to pacifist premises.

Der moralische Status menschlicher Embryonen ist und bleibt umstritten. Zugleich gibt es immer neue und tiefergehende biotechnologische Möglichkeiten, Embryonen zu manipulieren. Das betrifft insbesondere ihr Entwicklungspotential und die klare Zuordnung zur menschlichen Spezies. Dieses Buch untersucht, welche Auswirkungen diese neuen Manipulationsmöglichkeiten auf die Tragfähigkeit der Argumente haben, mit denen ein herausgehobener moralischer Status des Embryos begründet werden soll: die Potentialitäts- und Speziesargumente. In den Beiträgen werden aktuelle Entwicklungen in der Forschung mit Embryonen zusammengetragen und insbesondere folgende Fragen diskutiert: Was bedeuten diese Entwicklungen für die Potentialitäts- und Speziesargumente – und damit letztendlich auch für den moralischen Status der so manipulierten Embryonen? Können die zentralen embryoethischen Argumente angesichts der neuen biotechnologischen Eingriffsmöglichkeiten überhaupt aufrechterhalten werden? Sind alle Varianten der Argumente betroffen oder nur einige? Können und müssen sie möglicherweise reformuliert oder neu gedacht werden?

This introduction to the topical collection on trust and opacity in artificial intelligence briefly examines the significance of these notions and highlights key points of controversy surrounding them in contemporary philosophical debates. It then identifies four thematic domains within which the contributions in this collection can be situated: (i) foundational and conceptual prerequisites, (ii) ethical challenges, (iii) epistemological concerns, and (iv) perspectives relating to cultural, social, and political contexts. Finally, it summarizes how the individual contributions address these issues.

Der vorliegende Beitrag versucht sich dem Phänomen der Liebe, dessen Rolle für den zeitgenössischen ethischen Diskurs größtenteils unbestimmt ist, von zwei Seiten her anzunähern. Zunächst ist es Aufgabe, Liebe mit Hilfe klassischer, d. h. erstpersonaler Tugendbegriffe zu beschreiben. Im Anschluss daran wird das gleiche Phänomen aus der Perspektive der sogenannten Gabe beleuchtet, welche zum Ausdruck bringen soll, dass zur Liebe auch immer etwas gehöre, das man sich im Unterschied zur Tugend nicht selbst geben könne. Allerdings verfehlen beide Ansätze auf je eigene Weise die besondere Spezifität der Liebe, welche sich auch nicht durch dialektische Vermittlungsversuche im Sinne der Idee einer „geschenkten Tugend“ rekonstruieren lässt. Vielmehr ist die Liebe, so möchte der Beitrag abschließend herausarbeiten, die ultimative Form (des Lebens), die sie sich selbst gibt, indem sie sich den Liebenden geben lässt. In diesem Licht erscheinen Tugenden und Gaben als notwendige Bestandteile einer Lebensform Liebe, die zur Norm derer wird, die sich lieben.

Foreword The following guideline emerged from the project DUMFE: Dual Use and Misuse of Research Results (“Dual use und Missbrauch von Forschungsergebnissen”), funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF, 01GP2187). In recent years, dual use has become a significant issue in research ethics for numerous reasons, garnering considerable attention not only within the ethical community but also in the broader scientific community and among political and security circles. Among the reasons for this attention are the dissemination of scientific developments with high misuse potential, such as gain-of-function experiments (Imai et al. 2012; Herfst et al. 2012; Imperiale and Casadevall 2018); political factors, including recent shifts in the global security landscape (Nationale Akademie der Wissenschaften Leopoldina (Leopoldina) and Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) 2024, 9ff.); and heightened awareness of historical misuses of science (De Block and Adriaens, 2013). There is detailed advice on the handling of dual use research of concern provided by the Joint Committee (“Joint Committee on the Handling of Security-Relevant Research”) of the German National Academy of Science Leopoldina and the German Research Foundation (DFG) (2022). The Joint Committee also provides networking and exchange opportunities for Committees for Ethics in Security-Relevant Research (Kommissionen für Ethik sicherheitsrelevanter Forschung), so-called KEFs. Nevertheless, additional information and guidance on handling dual use research of concern is a regular request in particular from scientists, but also a request often heard in forums with policy experts, managers and administrators of institutions in research and education. The present guideline provides such additional in-depth information on the definition, examples, legal as well as ethical issues and options for governance of dual use research. It has been written by ethicists and philosophers of technology, supported by lawyers and members of the commission for ethics in research of Forschungszentrum Jülich. It is intended to provide additional information supporting the design of and deliberation in institutional bodies dealing with ethics of security-relevant research. It aims to highlight decisions and options relevant to different institutions and refers to further sources of information throughout.

Recently, there has been a growing body of work that takes a closer look at the concept of moral progress. In the following paper, I present various approaches that examine the phenomenon of moral progress by interpreting it in different ways: a) as a gain in inclusivity, b) as a consequence of comprehensive ethical reflexivity, c) as a cooperative accompaniment of technological and social progression, d) as a historical teleology materializing in the social sphere, e) as a postulate of change in ethical practice and f) as a dynamic medium of exchange between personal and impersonal reasons. What all these explanations have in common is that they regard moral progress as something desirable and also raise fundamental moral philosophical questions (e.g.What is the good? Are there moral facts? What can a morality look like that is neither selfish nor altruistic?) However, none of the approaches succeeds in freeing the concept from its inherent ambivalence.

The emergence of new digital technologies in modern work organizations is also changing the way employees and employers communicate, design work processes and responsibilities, and delegate. This paper takes an interdisciplinary—namely sociological and philosophical—perspective on the use of AI in healthcare work organizations. Using this example, structural power relations in modern work organizations are first examined from a sociological perspective, and it is shown how these structural power relations, decision-making processes, and areas of responsibility shift when AI is used. In the subsequent ethical part, opportunities for a fairer organization of work, but also dangers due to possibly changed power relations are elaborated and evaluated by presenting a realistic scenario from everyday clinical practice. After combining a proceduralist account of organizational ethics with a virtue-ethical approach, it is argued that certain organizational and character dispositions are necessary for employers and employees to meet the challenge of changing structural power relations in the future. With the same goal, a summative sociological perspective discusses challenges to workplace co-determination.

The problem of dual use is characterized by a wide range of activities or types of research and technology utilization. In this article, I explore the phenomenon of dual use in several steps to make it accessible for ethical inquiries: first, I examine the phenomenon in more detail; is it a genuine property of technologies and methods, a fundamental problem for research ethics, or a specific precondition for trade-off situations? Second, I show that various factors contribute to a certain good becoming a real dual use good. Third, I propose to develop a three-dimensional classification and evaluation system for dual use risks.

Der Beitrag diskutiert die Idee einer Substitution des Patientenwillens insbesondere in entscheidungskritischen Situationen mittels eines KI-gesteuerten ‚recommender system‘, d. h. durch Programme zur datenbasierten Unterstützung ärztlicher Therapieentscheidungen. Zentral für die Untersuchung dieser Fragestellung ist hierbei die Betrachtung der diachronen Identität des Willens und dessen Subjekts. Vor allem im klinisch-medizinischen Kontext erhält der menschliche Wille, je nach Zugriffsperspektive und Art der Zweckbestimmung, verschiedene, normativ unterschiedlich zu gewichtende Attribute („natürlich“, „autonom“, „mutmaßlich“ etc.), die zueinander in einem kaum auflösbaren Spannungsverhältnis stehen. Vor dem Hintergrund des Versuchs eines Abbaus dieser begrifflichen Spannungen soll in dem Beitrag insbesondere deutlich werden, dass jedes hybride (technische) System zur Willensinterpretation und Entscheidungsunterstützung zunächst den Lackmustest bezüglich der Frage bestehen muss, inwieweit gute Funktionalität des Systems, verlässliche Interpretierbarkeit des Patientenwillens und delegierbare Entscheidungssouveränität des Arztes (oder eines gleichrangigen Vertreters) in einer konkreten Anwendungssituation gewährleistet werden können. Erst dann ist die Behauptung gerechtfertigt, dass ‚recommender systems‘ der nicht substituierbaren Entscheidungsfindung des Arztes dienen können.

Patientenautonomie und freie Einwilligung in medizinische Interventionen aller Art sind im Zeitalter einer nachpaternalistischen Medizin im Allgemeinen und vor dem Hintergrund der Corona-Pandemie im Besonderen zu zentralen Prinzipien der Medizin- und Bioethik aufgerückt. Denn das Ideal einer (informierten) Willensentscheidung stößt in der Umsetzung oftmals an Grenzen und zeigt sich vor allem im Rahmen medizin- und bioethischer Grenzfragen als nicht unproblematisches Konzept, wie sich anhand besonders schwieriger und folgenreicher Therapieentscheidungen zeigt, die häufig gerade dann zu treffen sind, wenn die Patient:innen selbst schwer erkrankt, vulnerabel und nicht mehr entscheidungsfähig sind. Gemeinsam ist den Problemlagen dabei, dass sie alle letztlich auf den Begriff des Willens rekurrieren.

Dieser Band behandelt umfassend und systematisch die Frage des Patientenwillens: die historischen und philosophischen Grundlagen des Willensbegriffs, die Beziehung von Autonomie und Wille und praktische Fragen der Bioethik und des Biorechts. This work extend to residuated lattices the results of [ 7 ]. It also provides a possible generalization to this context of frontal operators in the sense of [ 9 ]. Let L be a residuated lattice, and f : L k → L a function. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for f to be compatible with respect to every congruence on L. We use this characterization of compatible functions in order to prove that the variety of residuated lattices is locally affine complete. We study some compatible functions on residuated lattices which are a generalization of frontal operators. We also give conditions for two operations P ( x, y ) and Q ( x, y ) on a residuated lattice L which imply that the function $${x \mapsto min\{y \in L : P(x, y) \leq Q(x, y)\}}$$ when defined, is equational and compatible. Finally we discuss the affine completeness of residuated lattices equipped with some additional operators.

Der Aufsatz diskutiert Beziehungen zwischen aktuellen Debatten einerseits zur Tugend ethik, andererseits zur Phänomenologie der Gabe. Im Fokus des Interesses steht das Phänomen der Verdienstlichkeit, welches in Form von pflichtüberschreitenden Handlungen oder Akten »reinen Gebens« Gestalt gewinnt. Während die Diskussion im französischen und deutschen Sprachraum sich weitgehend auf phänomenologische und sozialphilosophische Aspekte der Gabe beschränkt, steht im Zentrum der parallel dazu verlaufenden englischsprachigen Diskussion vor allem die metaethische Untersuchung des Status von super ero gato - rischen Handlungen. Angesichts der Parallelen zwischen diesen Debatten gilt es zunächst, grundlegende Berührungspunkte beider Theoriefelder zu thematisieren und zu evaluieren. Welche Relevanz die dabei sich ergebenden Schnittmengen für eine philosophische Ethik besitzen, bleibt abschließend zu prüfen.
