With emerging technologies such as genome research and the digitization of health records comes the need for new models of informed consent. In this climate of innovation people are often prone to explore the latest technological advancement as possible solutions, including for informed consent. In this paper, we present the design and evaluation of a so-called low-tech informed consent solution that was designed specifically for the informational and cultural needs of a vulnerable indigenous population, i.e., the San of South Africa. This low-tech solution took the form of a comic and, although it could enhance understanding and identification, the costs and labour intensity of comic design and the deriving limitations on its scalability should be critically considered in the light of a digitised and more standardized solution.

In the last decades, there has been a remarkable amount of research into the interdependence of word formation, grammar and lexicology. The present book is a first attempt to sum up the results of ongoing projects in intra- and interlinguistic contexts. Its main aims are to analyze problems regarding the tension between intrinsic language change and language interference and to address the need to use methods of synchronic and historical linguistics in the domains of derivation and compounding. This collection of papers originated with an international congress held in Rome in 2019 and convened by the University of Rome "La Sapienza", in co-operation with the Multilingualism Research Group (simultaneously being the Seventeenth Conference of this international organization), the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the ISMEO Association, and the Norwegian Institute of Philology. The book comprises eighteen articles and three essays that cover a wide range of languages from different families (Indo-European and Semitic) as well as two isolate languages, Sumerian and Elamite. The papers deal with three main areas of interest: word-formation from a comparative viewpoint, word-formation in various language contact settings, and word-formation in the dialectic interplay between derivational morphology, lexical history, underlying syntax and phraseology, as well as from the perspective of sociolinguistics and cultural history. -- (from back cover)

Stories about the socio-technical impact of the outcomes of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) on the world may create a concrete sense of the future consequences they may cause. Such stories may offer students and early career researchers who (will) develop, test, and deploy such technologies insights into their effects on individuals, other living beings, the environment, and society. In this paper, we argue that this method, known as storytelling in academic literature, can be effectively used to embed ethics in higher learning curricula through its power to appeal to students’ hearts and minds. Through storytelling, ethics lessons that emerged throughout history can be taught in a memorable way and raise empathetic skills, while fictional stories may allow students to identify with the characters and contemplate possible ethical outcomes of a decision in a safe manner. We provide an overview of various fictional and nonfictional forms that can be used to improve students’ motivation and equip them with some innovative tools that can support ethical decision-making, including science fiction, digital storytelling, Virtual Reality, and videogames. In addition, we recommend that ethics training via storytelling should be embedded as early as possible as integrated nodes into existing STEM curricula to stimulate empathy and critical thinking skills in students and to supplement existing rule-based education.

Building and expanding on George Bataille’s analysis of the restricted economy, the paper theorises violence as a plastic and productive force. Challenging accounts that, in different ways, define political violence solely as a negative and dis-integrating power (i.e. destructive of preexisting – actual or potential – “things”), the essay concentrates on the force that is unleashed to produce “unity” and “integrity”, be it at the individual or at the collective level. This perspective, I suggest, might contribute to gauging the limits of the (potentially unbounded) violence needed by contemporary political and economic regimes to construe and secure their integrity

What classical scholar is not familiar with one or more anecdotes of Archimedes' life? Few will not be able to recall the story of how this Greek mathematician invented a method for determining the volume of an object with an irregular shape while taking a bath and, excited by his new discovery, took to the streets naked crying, "Eureka!" Few will be ignorant of how Archimedes single-handedly repelled Marcellus' attack on Syracuse with his war engines and eventually was killed by a Roman soldier during the sack of the city while still working on one of his theorems. Yet, classicists' acquaintance with and interest in Archimedes does not seem to go much beyond this summary knowledge of these few anecdotes.

Postscript by Vincent Scully Based on notebooks composed since 1971, Aldo Rossi's memoir intermingles his architectural projects, including discussion of the major literary and artistic influences on his work, with his personal history.
