(Agnes) Charlene Senape McDermott (born 1937) is a teacher, philosopher, logician and mathematician.
Her writings have made significant contributions to the understanding of late Buddhist logic and epistemology and the appreciation of comparative (East-West) comparative philosophy as well as to a deeper knowledge of the history and evolution of medieval European linguistic theory.
Ms. McDermott earned her bachelor's degree, cum laude , as well as her doctorate, from the University of Pennsylvania. She did additional graduate work at the University of California, Berkeley, held a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, and did postdoctoral research at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.
The multilingual McDermott (Dutch, German, Latin, Italian, Sanskrit, Tibetan) is the author of three books and more than a score of scholarly articles and reviews. She carries the tight critical apparatus of her mathematical/logical background into all her investigations.
She has held professorships at CCNY(1986-91)and U. of New Mexico (Albuquerque) (1970-76) as well as various Visiting Professorships at U. of California (Berkeley), U. of Hawaii (Honolulu), U. of Washington (Seattle) and U. of Pittsburgh (Semester at Sea).
Her earlier assistant professorships in philosophy and in mathematics include the U. Of Wisconsin(Milwaukee), SUNY ( Buffalo), Drexel University (Philadelphia), Hampton University (Hampton, Va.) and Haverford College (Haverford, Pa.).
