Deleuze remains indifferent to the ambient pathos related to the end of metaphysics and compares the undertakings of destruction, overcoming and deconstruction of metaphysics with the gestures of murderers. He considers himself “a pure metaphysician,” which is rather unique in the contemporary philosophical landscape. What are we to make of this and similar claims? What do they mean in light of the effort made during the last several centuries to overcome, overturn, destroy, or deconstruct metaphysics? If we consider Deleuze’s work more closely, might find him engaging in the kind of thinking that is commonly referred to as metaphysical? And if Deleuze is indeed a metaphysician, does this undercut the many insightful contributions of the twentieth century philosophers who dedicate their thought to bringing down Western metaphysical tradition? Or does it suggest that there is a sense of metaphysics that should nevertheless be preserved? These and similar questions are addressed in this volume by a series of international scholars. The goal of the book is to critically engage an aspect of Deleuze’s thought that, for the most part, has been neglected, and to understand better his “immanent metaphysics.” It also seeks to explore the consequences of such an engagement.

This article aims at understanding the North-American reception of Foucault’s Folie et déraison. After showing how American conceptions of social control facilitated the integration of Foucauldian thinking in North-American academia, I examine the ways by which the advocates of anti-psychiatry and the historians of psychiatry read Folie et déraison, which became emblematic for French Theory. I then present various Anglo-American critiques of Folie et déraison and defend the persistence of a “Foucauldian spirit” against the sci-entifization of psychiatry. All this allows for an assessment of the legacy of Folie et déraison in the North American debates.

Hayman a fait du genre biographique sa spécialité pour nous avoir déjà offert plusieurs études consacrées à la vie et l’œuvre d’auteurs aussi variés que Sartre, Proust, T. Mann, Beckett, Brecht, Sade et Ionesco. Il nous présente ici une brève introduction à Nietzsche qui fait écho à un travail beaucoup plus substantiel publié en 1980 sous le titre Nietzsche. A Critical Life. Dans son dernier livre, Hayman approche la pensée nietzschéenne sous l’angle de la folie en reprenant ce qui avait été entrepris dans l’un des chapitres de son ouvrage de 1980. Les voix de Nietzsche font de la pensée nietzschéenne l’expression d’une pluralité de voix comprises comme l’expression symptomatique de notre actualité occidentale. Le nouveau métaphysicien, à la manière du schizophrène, entend des voix intérieures contradictoires entre elles sans pouvoir s’accrocher à un mode langagier plus essentiel que les autres. L’insensé n’a plus d’autre choix que d’affirmer une multiplicité de sens jusqu’à cultiver l’art du paradoxe à travers différents personnages.

Manola Antonioli se donne pour tâche d'élucider la nature du rapport controversé de Deleuze avec l'histoire de la philosophie. Pour ce faire, elle passe en revue chacune des monographies que Deleuze a consacrées aux philosophes: Hume, Nietzsche, Bergson, Kant, Spinoza et Leibniz. Seul Foucault, qui fait l'objet de la dernière étude d'auteur de Deleuze, manque à l'appel. Lorsqu'il revient sur les figures de la tradition, Deleuze est impétueux et les textes dont il s'occupe font l'objet d'une violence interprétative qui rend les auteurs étudiés méconnaissables du point de vue des commentaires canoniques. Les acteurs de l'histoire de la philosophie sont essentiels à la définition de la modernité deleuzienne. Mais l'exigence de tracer un portrait ressemblant des philosophes du passé n'est pas maintenue. À propos de ses habitudes exégétiques peu orthodoxes, Deleuze affirme vouloir faire un enfant à un auteur qui soit bien le sien mais qui soit aussi étranger à ses préoccupations premières. Les tableaux deleuziens sont toujours «anexacts» au sens husserlien où le critère de l'exactitude est périmé. Mais contrairement à la doctrine husserlienne, le souci deleuzien d'anexactitude est motivé par le renoncement à toute idée de progrès dialectique de l'histoire. Deleuze refuse de tracer une lignée philosophique à la manière idéaliste où tous les auteurs correspondraient entre eux à travers un sens global et unificateur. Il tente plutôt de dégager le caractère singulier des philosophes en analysant librement un ou quelques-uns des concepts qui font irruption au cours de l'histoire. Ainsi en va-t-il pour le Spinoza de Deleuze tout entier contenu dans la notion d'expression alors que le terme ne fait l'objet d'aucune définition par l'auteur de L'Éthique, ou encore son Leibniz qui devient le dramaturge d'une théorie de la «compossibilisation des incompossibles» de prime abord incompatible avec l'idéal leibnizien d'harmonie préétablie. C'est toujours à un problème particulier soulevé par un philosophe et jamais à une vérité éternelle que Deleuze tente de raccrocher sa pensée. Comme l'affirme très justement Antonioli.

Gilles Deleuze is a contemporary French thinker who shows the greatest awareness to Québec culture by integrating into his philosophical work some of its revolutionary forces. By way of illustration, the first part of this article attends to the contributions of prominent cultural figures — all discussed by Deleuze — namely, Jack Kérouac, Pierre Perrault, Michèle Lalonde, Norman McLaren, and Alexis the Trotter. The second part of this article explores the reception of Deleuze in Québec in and outside of academia. Notably, we will see how his philosophy was part of the counter-culture before even receiving recognition within philosophy departments.
