Ilge Interference Patterns In Semantics and Epistemology
    Global Philosophy 13 (1): 39-64. 2002.
The issue as to whether an atomistic or holistic viewof knowledge and meaning is correct relies on the way part/whole relationships is analysed, exactly as the issue as to whether a constructive or realistic view of knowledge and meaningis correct relies on the way internal/external relationships is analysed. Both theprinciple of compositionality and the context principle depend on how finely the constituents, the nature and the size of the context are identified; both the notion of meaning andthe…Read more

The Meaning of Category Theory for 21st Century Philosophy
    Global Philosophy 16 (4): 424-459. 2006.
Among the main concerns of 20th century philosophy was that of the foundations of mathematics. But usually not recognized is the relevance of the choice of a foundational approach to the other main problems of 20th century philosophy, i.e., the logical structure of language, the nature of scientific theories, and the architecture of the mind. The tools used to deal with the difficulties inherent in such problems have largely relied on set theory and its “received view”. There are specific issues…Read more

    Mind and Causality (edited book)
    John Benjamins. 2004.
Title descriptionWhich causal patterns are involved in mental processes? On what mechanisms does the self-organisation of cognitive structure rest? Can a naturalistic view account for the basic resources of intentionality, while avoiding the objections to reductive materialism?By considering the developmental, phenomenological and biological aspects linking mind and causality, this volume offers a state-of-the art theoretical proposal emphasising the fine-tuning of cognition with the complexity of…Read more

    The geometric roots of semantics
In Liliana Albertazzi (ed.), Meaning and Cognition: A multidisciplinary approach, John Benjamins. pp. 169-201. 2000.
By developing the concept of the geometric space of conceptualization, this paper seeks to establish common ground between the perceptual and logical structures expressed in language. The author’s overall thesis is that the logical status of language is a projection of geometric and topological patterns, and that these can be described. Although highly technical, the essay has several points in common with other contributions in the book. Like those by Violi and Geeraerts, for example, it analys…Read more

This book reports on cutting-edge concepts related to Bourbaki’s notion of structures mères. It merges perspectives from logic, philosophy, linguistics and cognitive science, suggesting how they can be combined with Bourbaki’s mathematical structuralism in order to solve foundational, ontological and epistemological problems using a novel category-theoretic approach. By offering a comprehensive account of Bourbaki’s structuralism and answers to several important questions that have arisen in con…Read more

    Natural Epistemology
    Humana Mente 16 (43). 2023.
I now intend to return to Husserl’s argument against psychologism in logic, aiming to frame it within the broader antinaturalistic controversy and see how recent proposals of a natural (or naturalized) epistemology could affect it.

Explanation and Causality: a List of Issues
    Humana Mente 8 (29). 2015.
After a concise description of issues concerning the causal and the deductive-nomological models of explanation, the flaws in the alternative view centred on relevance-to-context are examined. The paper argues for the need of a wider spectrum of options which takes into account both the Local/Global and the Internal/External aspects in order to determine the sense and the adequacy of any explanation. As a test for this argument, some specific problems are considered about the range of causal bon…Read more

    What’s behind meaning?
Journal of Philosophical Investigations at University of Tabriz 11 (21): 119-145. 2017.
The paper addresses the main questions to be dealt with by any semantic theory which is committed to provide an explanation of how meaning is possible. On one side the paper argues that the resources provided by the development of mathematical logic, theoretical computer science, cognitive psychology, and general linguistics in the 20th Century, however indispensable to investigate the structure of language, rely on the existence of end products in the morphogenesis of meaning. On the other, the…Read more

    Compositionality up to Parameters
    ProtoSociology 21 41-66. 2005.
The principle of compositionality (PC) claims that the meaning of a compound expression is determined by the meanings of its constituent expressions and the way they compose. Is it true or false? Does it apply to both natural and formalised languages? In order to answer, we must examine various formal versions of PC, the notion of meaning and the patterns of composition. Moreover, further principles are called for to determine its import and, in particular, its relationships with the Context Pri…Read more

    The theory of descriptions revisited
Notre Dame Journal of Formal Logic 30 (1): 91-104. 1988.
An excursus is carried out through the principal steps in the development of the theory of descriptions (TD) from B. Russell until now, and its most important advantages and disadvantages are sketched. TD is studied in the context of model theory (in A. Robinson's style), taking preservation and classification theorems based on normal forms into consideration. Finally, the categorical formulation of TD in topos theory, starting from M. Fourman and D. Scott, is presented with reference to sheaves…Read more

    Naturalizzazione: vie e ostacoli
Annali Del Dipartimento di Filosofia 18 217-254. 2012.
Can epistemology be naturalized? The question has more than one sense. There are many forms of both the naturalistic stance and its denial in relation to different topics and by means of different strategies. Only some of them are instantiated in the existing literature. After a taxonomy of the range of possible forms of naturalism and anti-naturalism, the paper suggests an emergentist view which shifts the issue from psychology to cosmology.

John L. Bell: A biographical note
    Aisthesis: Pratiche, Linguaggi E Saperi Dell’Estetico 8 (1): 157-158. 2015.
Born in 1945, John Lane Bell is not only one of the greatest logicians of our time, but he is also one the most gifted in the art of writing, as witnessed by the success of his introductory texts, many of which were originally written as lecture notes: their essential clarity is an exemplar of the Attic style. More generally, Bell’s works are a rare example of how rigour and sophisticated elegance can coexist

This paper discusses the positions of Italian philosopher Giulio Preti (1911-1972) in relation to the quarrel between Analytic and Continental philosophy. Preti's thought appears as a systematic thought permitting to overcome, through his logical, epistemological and linguistic reflection, the divide between these two approaches. The different features of his philosophy are analyzed here in detail and compared to the main theoretical assumptions of Analytic and Continental philosophy.
