El problema ético de la huelga de hambre ha dado cabida a soluciones contrapuestas, incluso en el contexto de teorías éticas que rechazan el suicidio. Algunos piensan que la sola honestidad del fin subjetivo basta para justificar la acción del huelguista. Otros, aunque son minoría, sostienen que la huelga de hambre es un acto reprobable per se, porque implica un atentado directo contra la vida o salud del sujeto. En este trabajo se defiende esta última interpretación. A juicio de los autores, la huelga de hambre es un caso de suicidio intencional. Luego, nunca es lícito, bajo ningún aspecto, llevar adelante una acción de esta naturaleza

Studying behavior in economics, sociology, and statistics often involves fitting models in which the response variable depends on a dummy variable- also known as a regime-switch variable- or in which the response variable is observed only if a particular selection condition is met. In either case, standard regression techniques deliver inconsistent estimators if unobserved factors that affect the re- sponse are correlated with unobserved factors that affect the switching or selection variable. Consistent estimators can be obtained by maximum likelihood estimation of a joint model of the outcome and switching or selection variable. This article describes a “wrapper” program, ssm, that calls gllamm to fit such models. The wrapper accepts data in a simple structure, has a straightforward syntax, and reports out- put that is easily interpretable. One important feature of ssm is that the log likelihood can be evaluated using adaptive quadrature. Copyright 2006 by StataCorp LP.

The aim of this paper is to analyze the doctrine of voluntary omissions in Thomas Aquinas and one of his seventeenth-century commentators, John of St. Tomas. It is argued that both authors made relevant contributions to the philosophical understanding of omissions, which can enrich the current debate on the subject. The paper begins by explaining some problems raised in contemporary philosophy while showing how those same problems were previously discussed in scholastic philosophy. Subsequently, it discusses in detail the contributions of Aquinas and John of St. Thomas.

Resumen En este trabajo se exponen veintiuna tesis sobre la asignación de recursos escasos en tiempos de pandemia o crisis sanitaria. El autor parte de la base de que nunca se justifica tratar a una persona como un mero medio. A partir de este principio fundamental, y de otras exigencias de justicia, procura determinar cuáles son los límites a las consideraciones, por lo demás legítimas, de eficiencia o de utilidad. Esto le permite discernir qué criterios de distribución son moral mente aceptables y cuáles no lo son. This work presents twenty one theses on the allocation of scarce resources in times ofpandemic or health crisis. The author assumes that treating a person as a mere means is never justified. On the basis of this fundamental principle, and other requirements of justice, he seeks to determine what are the limits to considerations, otherwise legitímate, of efficiency or utility. This allows him to discern which distribution criteria are morally acceptable and which are not.

En este trabajo se lleva a cabo un análisis del principio moral ciceroniano minimade malis eligenda. El autor procura mostrar que las afirmaciones de Benedicto XVI sobre el uso profiláctico del condón en conductas sexuales moralmente desordenadas están en armonia con la interpretación clásica de este principio, esto es, con aquella interpretación que ha sido recogida como verdadera por la tradición clásica de la ley natural. Con esta finalidad, el trabajo se estructura de la siguiente manera. En primer lugar, se explica cuál es la interpretación proporcionalista del principio minimade malis eligenda,y se ofrece un argumento fundamental para rechazarla. En segundo lugar, se exponen tres sentidos en los que el principio ha operado como una regla moral válida en el marco no proporcionalista de la teoria clásica de la ley natural. En tercer lugar, se demuestra que los dichos del Papa responden a uno de estos usos adecuados del principio, por lo que no hay razones para pensar que él se ha apartado de la enseñanza moral tradicional.

A central thesis in the ethics and epistemology of St. Thomas Aquinas is that both speculative and practical reason proceed from first principles in their search for truth. According to Aquinas, the first principles of both orders are analogous and share common features. However, it is not always easy to understand the extent of this analogy. In this paper we intend to analyze two common properties of the first principles to show similarities and differences that exist in the way these analogous properties are verified in each order of principles. Firstly, we expound which characteristics correspond to the knowledge of both orders of principles. Secondly, we examine the idea that the knowledge of all the first principles comes from sense knowledge. Finally, we address the idea that all other knowledge, of both the speculative order and the practical order, depends on first principles.
