The aim of this paper is to elaborate on Izydora Dąmbska’s comparative study of the philosophy of language of Ingarden and Frege. My analysis is conducted within the context of the studies about the so-called analytic-continental divide. In the first section, I give an account of Dąmbska’s analysis of the similarities between Ingarden and Frege. The second section is devoted to the examination of Ingarden’s relationship to the analytic philosophy of language. This part delivers more detailed comments on some essential connections between Ingarden and Frege, and Ingarden and Ajdukiewicz respectively. I conclude by the statement that Dąmbska’s work (and philosophy of Lvov-Warsaw School in general) plays an important role on the map of the studies about the analytic-continental divide.

Tomy I–II obejmują blisko 300 haseł poświęconych Kazimierzowi Twardowskiemu, a więc założycielowi Szkoły, wszystkim przedstawicielom jej pierwszej i drugiej, a także wybranym przedstawicielom trzeciej generacji dydaktycznej. Poszczególne hasła zawierają portrety, dane biograficzne omówionych postaci (oparte tam, gdzie to było możliwe, na dokumentach źródłowych), ogólną charakterystykę ich twórczości oraz (na ogół pełne) bibliografie przedmiotowe i podmiotowe.

This paper examines Roman Ingarden’s criticism of Kazimierz Twardowski’s philosophical programme. According to Ingarden, the style of philosophizing cultivated by Twardowski prevented his students from engaging in complex philosophical problems. Ingarden’s writings suggest that, as a result, they ignored phenomenology. The paper argues that Ingarden’s criticism is not entirely accurate. Members of the Lvov-Warsaw School were familiar with Edmund Husserl’s phenomenology, and although they often criticized it, they recognized its value. Moreover, it can be demonstrated that Husserl’s ideas influenced several of Twardowski’s students.

The aim of the paper is to examine the views on phenomenology developed by representatives of the Lvov–Warsaw School (henceforth: LWS). The paper shows that, firstly, there is a significant genetic connection between the LWS and Husserl’s phenomenological movement. Secondly, members of the LWS have developed a coherent understanding of phenomenology, which they regard as an autonomous philosophical science of essence. They particularly appreciate the fact that phenomenologists are committed to making clear distinctions. However, they are skeptical about the reliability of Wesensschau, as it is based on immediate insight rather than deduction or induction. Furthermore, they consider the works of phenomenologists to be obscure. Thirdly, their criticism of phenomenology is similar, though less radical, to that offered by analytic philosophers, such as Moritz Schlick, Gilbert Ryle, and Rudolf Carnap
