Gossip is ubiquitous, yet morally troubling. Approximately 65% of human conversation involves evaluative talk about absent others, yet such talk often feels like backstabbing even when it causes no harm, violates no privacy, and consists entirely of truth. This article argues that gossip's distinctive wrong lies not in privacy violation, harm, or deception, but in something more fundamental which is the exclusion of targets from discourse about themselves. Building on this foundation, I develop three constraints on permissible gossip operating at different levels of moral analysis: participatory standing, purpose, and justice. These constraints together provide a framework for navigating gossip's complex moral terrain while respecting both the social value of information-sharing and the dignity of those we discuss.

Political leaders sometimes delay acting on moral convictions they already hold, citing strategic necessity. Existing political theory offers no adequate framework for evaluating such delays: classical accounts of prudence are synchronic but offer little guidance for the diachronic question of when a recognized moral imperative should be acted upon. This paper introduces temporal prudence as a distinct political virtue to fill this gap, defined by four elements: prior moral clarity, active preparation during delay, decisive action when the opportune moment (kairos) arrives, and acknowledgment of the moral cost that waiting inevitably imposes. We develop the concept through Abraham Lincoln's handling of emancipation arguing that Lincoln exemplifies temporal prudence in its fullest and most tragic form. The paper situates the concept in relation to existing literatures on phronesis, dirty hands, and political judgment, and provides explicit criteria for distinguishing temporal prudence from its most dangerous impersonator: rationalized cowardice. We begin and conclude with generalizing this case beyond Lincoln and show modern cases where this feels particularly useful.

Artificial intelligence is widely celebrated for its unprecedented speed: its capacity to accelerate data processing, automate decisions, and remove temporal friction from human activity. This ideology of acceleration treats efficiency as the highest good yet leaves unexamined the question of what is lost when slowness is engineered out of human life. This paper defends slowness as an intrinsic normative good, indispensable for human flourishing in an age of artificial acceleration. I argue that slowness sustains three essential dimensions of a good life. First, it enables cognitive depth, creating the temporal space necessary for wisdom, reflection, and genuine creativity. Second, it safeguards authentic agency, allowing individuals to deliberate, form values, and resist the automation of choice. Third, it anchors meaningful experience, since many of life’s richest practices-friendship, craft, contemplation-are definitionally slow. The claim is not that slowness is inherently good, but that, for certain activities, time is integral to their meaning and integrity.
