I argue in this essay that Wittgenstein’s notion of aspect-perception can be used to reinterpret and partially deflate Hegel’s account of self-consciousness and recognition in the Phenomenology of Spirit. I propose that Hegel’s structure can be rendered as less metaphysically totalizing by grounding it in ordinary intersubjective experience. After reconstructing Wittgenstein’s concept of aspect-dawning, wherein perception shifts from objective reporting to an immediate, expressive “seeing-as”, I examine Hegel’s account of recognition as a dynamic process in which consciousness transforms into self-consciousness through its relation to another self-conscious being. My central claim is that moments of Hegelian recognition can be understood as instances of aspect-perception; the sudden apprehension of another as a self-conscious being entails a reciprocal, phenomenologically entrenched transformation of experience. I briefly incorporate Lucy O'Brien’s perspective on intersubjective self-consciousness, where the gaze of another produces an affective awareness of oneself as an object of attention. What I refer to as a double aspect-perception dramatizes Hegelian recognition as a certain perceptual, phenomenal adventure, in which one simultaneously apprehends the other as minded and oneself as seen. I attempt to show how Wittgenstein’s insights can illuminate the immediacy and dynamic character of Hegelian intersubjectivity, offering a less metaphysically-laden and practically applicable interpretation of recognition.
