Nietzsche characterizes the sovereign individual using the metaphysical and moral language of free will and responsibility. It is, therefore, unsurprising that this description has sparked significant controversy among Nietzsche’s commentators—particularly in Anglo-American scholarship—as it appears to contradict the vast majority of his positions on these subjects. First, the article presents the two principal currents of interpretation: on one side, commentators who affirm the figure of the sovereign individual as compatible with Nietzsche’s philosophy; on the other, scholars who argue that the passage should be understood as ironic, since it not only contradicts Nietzsche’s steadfast fatalism but also clashes with the central tenets of his philosophy. Second, the article advances a position within this ongoing controversy. In my reading, Nietzsche understands agency as the incorporation of certain attitudes. An agent’s free choice consists only in the decision to transform certain attitudes into instinct, that is, to internalize ideals of conduct in such a way that they can become habits of action.

Os artigos reunidos nesta coletânea tratam de temas diversos, cobrindo tanto os aspectos mais propositivos da filosofia de Nietzsche (filosofia da ação, filosofia da história, filosofia da linguagem; sua retomada e valorização da retórica e seu diálogo com a literatura e com a Antiguidade) quanto seus aspectos mais críticos (crítica da religião, da moralidade e da metafísica), e ilustram, em seu conjunto, a pluralidade de enfoques que caracteriza o estágio atual da pesquisa Nietzsche no Brasil (estudos exe-géticos, aproveitamentos críticos, estudos de fontes e de sua recepção, seja no Brasil, seja em outros continentes, análise argumentativa econfrontação crítica com suas teses). Por fim, o livro reúne textos de pesquisadoras e pesquisadores em momentos distintos de seus processos de formação, incluindo desde autores que estão no início da pós-graduação até pesquisadores bastante experientes, com trajetórias já consolidadas na pesquisa Nietzsche e com atuação destacada em seus respectivos programas de pós-graduação. Essa diversidade de percursos é uma prova da vitalidade da filosofia nietzschiana, que continua exercendo um poder de atração sobre as novas gerações.

Raphael is one of the most cited painters in Nietzsche’ work. In The Birth of Tragedy, Nietzsche develops a theory of Apollonian art, in which Raphael plays an important role. I aim to show where Nietzsche places Raphael in his artist’s metaphysics, focusing on a source little studied, in this context, in the literature on Nietzsche: Schopenhauer’s essay on spirit seeing. So, this article intends to deepen the understanding of Apollonian art by means of a little explored source (Schopenhauer’s essay) and a subject little researched (the visual arts in Nietzsche’s work). I sustain the hypothesis that Schopenhauer’s essay clarifies the relationship between Nietzsche e Raphael, as well as enriches his artist’s metaphysics.

This article examines a subject that has received relatively little attention in the literature on Nietzsche’s On the Genealogy of Morality: the pivotal role played by the emergence of consciousness (Bewusstsein) as an epistemic faculty in the development of conscience (Gewissen) as a moral faculty. To achieve this objective, I will (1) introduce the inquiry, (2) elucidate Nietzsche’s hypothesis regarding the emergence of consciousness, (3) establish a connection between consciousness and the genesis of conscience, and (4) expound upon the cognitive capacities involved in the formation of conscience as a moral faculty.

Resumo: O artigo investiga as origens biológicas das teorias do impulso de Nietzsche e Freud, extraindo as consequências que delas podemos tirar. Assim, realizaremos inicialmente uma exposição das teorias dos impulsos de Freud e Nietzsche, para depois compará-las a partir das seguintes questões: A gênese dos conceitos e a relação entre psicologia e biologia; Os aspectos dinâmicos e econômicos dos impulsos; 3) O lugar da teoria dos impulsos no contexto de suas obras.: The paper investigates the biological origins of Nietzsche’s and Freud’s theories of drives, drawing their consequences. First, I will expose both theories and later I will compare them, based on the following issues: The genesis of the concepts and the relationship between psychology and biology; The dynamical and economical aspects of drives; The place of the theory of drives in the context of their oevres.

Apesar de ser reconhecida como uma das principais fontes de Nietzsche, poucos são os estudos que se dedicam a discutir em detalhes a obra de Paul Rée e avaliar sua relação com a obra de Nietzsche. Este artigo objetiva mostrar a importância do diálogo de Nietzsche com Rée para o desenvolvimento de uma proposta de uma naturalização da moral, programa de pesquisa levado a cabo por Nietzsche a partir de Humano, demasiado humano. Para isso, faremos uma exposição das ideias de Rée, apontando duas concepções diferentes de naturalismo e suas consequências nas análises feitas por Rée e Nietzsche do fenômeno da moralidade, o que será exemplificado através da interpretação de quatro aforismos de Humano, demasiado humano.

Entre os temas kantianos discutidos por Nietzsche, o tradicional problema do estatuto da coisa em si é particularmente relevante para a formulação de sua própria filosofia. Por esse motivo, a compreensão de Nietzsche desse problema também se tornou um dos assuntos mais debatidos e controversos entre seus intérpretes. De forma geral, tende-se a identificar na filosofia de Nietzsche uma trajetória que o levaria da admissão de um conceito de coisa em si em sua juventude até uma negação, em sua filosofia madura, da coisa em si, considerada como uma concepção contraditória. A discordância entre os comentadores surge quando se pergunta se o conceito de coisa em si que Nietzsche nega é exatamente aquilo que Kant entendia por coisa em si. Nosso trabalho pretende discutir essa questão a partir do estudo de três objeções de Nietzsche ao conceito de coisa em si, levando em consideração os aspectos históricos do problema e as soluções oferecidas pela literatura secundária. Among the Kantian issues discussed by Nietzsche, the traditional problem of the status of the thing-in-itself is particularly relevant to the formulation of his own philosophy. For this reason, Nietzsche's comprehension of this problem has also become one of the most debated and controversial subjects among his interpreters. There is a general trend among them to identify in Nietzsche's philosophy a path that would lead him from the assumption of a concept of thing-in-itself in his youth to a denial of the thing-in-itself, in his late philosophy, what is regarded as a contradictory conception. The disagreement among them takes place when it is called into question if the concept of thing-in-itself that Nietzsche denies is exactly what Kant meant by thing-in-itself. My purpose is to discuss this issue by means of a study of three objections made by Nietzsche to the concept of thing-in-itself, taking the historical aspects of the problem, as well as the solutions offered by the secondary literature, into consideration
