This Special Issue brings together a collection of seven articles that aim to expand our understanding of relationship building and socialisation practices in family discourse with the key focus on the interactional accomplishment of “doing family.” Exploring video-recorded face-to-face, digitally-mediated and hybrid interactions, they examine a variety of family conversations – parent-child, sibling (brother-brother; sister-sister), married couples and in-laws – in different languages (Chinese, English, Japanese, Russian, Spanish), including some code-switching. The Special Issue also illustrates the use of the key discourse analytic approaches to interactional data analysis, ranging from interactional pragmatics and interactional sociolinguistics to membership categorisation analysis and conversation analysis.

This paper explores how accounting practices involving holding-self-accountable and holding-other-accountable foreground tacit relational expectations contingent upon the affordances and constraints of “doing-family-at-a-distance.” Drawing on interactional pragmatics and membership categorisation analysis (MCA), I examine how accounting practices surface the interlocutors’ multimodal evaluations of conduct (in)appropriateness vis-à-vis their relational expectations, entitlements and responsibilities, thereby implicitly operationalising membership in relational categories, including parent–migrant-adult-child and husband–wife. Through micro analyses of interactions between Spanish-speaking family members, I illustrate how interlocutors implicitly foreground and negotiate relational expectations tied to “doing transnational family,” such as visiting children overseas and “doing family transnationally” by pursuing aligning stances, thereby orienting to the relational relevance of sustaining stability within their relationships. The findings highlight accounting as a category-implicative action and a window into implied relational expectations consequential for how we interactionally accomplish “family” at a distance.

It is not uncommon for patients with advanced disease to express a wish to hasten death (WTHD). Qualitative studies of the WTHD have found that such a wish may have different meanings, none of which can be understood outside of the patient’s personal and sociocultural background, or which necessarily imply taking concrete steps to ending one’s life. The starting point for the present study was a previous systematic review of qualitative studies of the WTHD in advanced patients. Here we analyse in greater detail the statements made by patients included in that review in order to examine their moral understandings and representations of illness, the dying process and death. We identify and discuss four classes of assumptions: (1) assumptions related to patients’ moral understandings in terms of dignity, autonomy and authenticity; (2) assumptions related to social interactions; (3) assumptions related to the value of life; and (4) assumptions related to medicalisation as an overarching context within which the WTHD is expressed. Our analysis shows how a philosophical perspective can add to an understanding of the WTHD by taking into account cultural and anthropological aspects of the phenomenon. We conclude that the knowledge gained through exploring patients’ experience and moral understandings in the end-of-life context may serve as the basis for care plans and interventions that can help them experience their final days as a meaningful period of life, restoring some sense of personal dignity in those patients who feel this has been lost.

The dangerous-sport paradigm conceptualizes danger as voluntary peril for autonomous individuals, rendering relational configurations unintelligible. Analyzing Tinku (Bolivia) and Huka-Huka (Brazil), this article develops communal relational danger: situations where bodily peril is the constitutive medium through which cosmological and communal relations are enacted – relations impossible through safer means. Safetification reduces danger to protect individuals; this preserves individualist sports but would threaten practices where peril constitutes the relations themselves. This asymmetry reveals epistemic injustice (the paradigm lacks interpretive resources to recognize that danger can belong to configurations rather than individuals) and motivates methodological pluralism in sport philosophy.

The purpose of this paper is to argue that, when confronted with a specific form of harmful speech, strategic silence can function as a counterspeech strategy that, under certain conditions, outperforms its alternatives. In public contexts characterized by a systematic conflation of the descriptive and the evaluative, usual counterspeech strategies risk amplifying messages that are detrimental to already marginalized communities. These contexts comprise instances of politicization of factual claims and naturalization of ideology. When claims previously perceived as ideological are presented as factual, and conversely, when claims commonly received as factual are presented as ideological, strategic silence can often mitigate the harm more effectively. Our argument crucially relies on the idea that positive interventions in these public contexts tend to foster amplification or to generate crossed disagreements, thereby contributing to the rise of polarization.

In the context of the end of life, many authors point out how the experience of identity is crucial for the well-being of patients with advanced disease. They define this identity in terms of autonomy, control, or dependence, associating these concepts with the sense of personal dignity. From the perspective of the phenomenology of embodiment, Kay Toombs and other authors have investigated the ways disease can impact on the subjective world of patients and have stressed that a consideration of this personal world can promote understanding and recognition of their experience. Based on the findings of qualitative studies of the perception of dignity and autonomy in patients at the end of life, this analysis assesses concepts such as being-in-the-world in illness, embodiment, lived body versus objective body or the gaze of the other from a Toombsian phenomenological perspective.

Resumen Este artículo busca analizar y hacer una lectura de la identidad, misión, ubicación y aporte que la parroquia ha venido realizando y tejiendo en relación con el contexto urbano. Al mismo tiempo desea comprender cómo ha incidido dicho fenómeno en el modo en el que la parroquia se ve y se lee, como también la manera en que se evidencian sus exigencias y los retos en tal contexto. Es de gran relevancia la pregunta sobre la identidad y la misión de la parroquia en la ciudad, ya que parecería muchas veces diluirse entre tantas propuestas y dinámicas que ofrece la ciudad y los desafíos que le ofrece el ser humano-urbano y el nuevo estilo de congregante. Por ello urge redescubrir su sentido más profundo, ya que, si la parroquia no tiene una clara identidad en medio de la ciudad, corre el riesgo de permanecer en su autorreferencialidad, perdiendo su dinamismo misionero.This article seeks to analyze and read the identity, mission, location and contribution that the parish has been making and weaving in relation to the urban context, at the same time understanding how this phenomenon has affected the way in which it is seen and it is read, as well, to show what their demands and challenges are in this context. The question about the identity and mission of the parish in the city is of great relevance, since it would seem many times to be diluted between so many proposals and dynamics that the city offers and the challenges that the human-urban being offers and the new style of congregant. For this reason, it is urgent to rediscover its deepest meaning, since if the parish does not have a clear identity in the middle of the city, it runs the risk of remaining in its self-referentiality, losing its missionary dynamism.
