Scientists often avoid theories that are not clearly superior to existing ones. We suggest instead that exploring a wide range of empirically indistinguishable (or even less empirically adequate) theories can support long-term scientific progress. This claim is inspired by an analogy with biological evolution, where many genetic changes are neutral, meaning they produce no observable differences in an organism’s phenotype and fitness. Such neutral variation arises because biological systems are robust to genetic change and it in turn enhances a population’s capacity for innovation. Similar to how genetic changes that produce no observable phenotypic differences and no change in organism’s fitness can be central to the ability of a biological population to evolve, theories that produce no noticeable improvement at a given time may increase the innovative potential of science and improve scientists’ preparedness for future evidence.

Das innovative politische Denken der Gegenwart bewegt sich zwischen Post-Marxismus und Poststrukturalismus. »Autonomie« und »Heteronomie« bezeichnen zwei Leitbegriffe, die dabei ins Feld geführt und kontrovers diskutiert werden. Der vorliegende Band untersucht die Möglichkeiten und Grenzen einer politischen Philosophie und Theorie auf der Grundlage dieser Begriffe. Er enthält Beiträge aus Philosophie und Sozialwissenschaften, deren Verfasserinnen und Verfasser nicht nur analytisch auf die entsprechenden Theoriezusammenhänge zugreifen, sondern eigenständige Positionen in diesen Kontexten darstellen. Mit Beiträgen von Jens Badura, Friedrich Balke, André Brodocz, Alex Demirovic, Alexander García Düttmann, Andreas Niederberger, Alice Pechriggl, Andreas Wagner und dem Frankfurter Arbeitskreis für politische Theorie & Philosophie.

Obwohl Claude Lefort auaerhalb Frankreichs nur Eingeweihten bekannt sein durfte, war er einer der einflussreichsten politischen Theoretiker fur den franzosischen Diskurs seit dem Zweiten Weltkrieg. Nach dem Krieg hatte er in diversen Projekten an der Etablierung einer franzosischen kritischen Linken pragend mitgewirkt, die sich gegen die partei- und Sowjetunionstreue Linie Sartres durchzusetzen hatte. So entwickelte er ein Verstandnis des kommunistischen Totalitarismus, das dann gleichsam eine Kontrastfolie fur seine Demokratie- und Menschenrechtstheorie abgeben konnte. In allen diesen Aspekten lassen sich wesentliche Entwicklungen auch der internationalen politiktheoretischen Debatten auf seine Diskussionsbeitrage zuruckfuhren. Am bekanntesten ist sicherlich seine These von der Verortung des Kerns der Demokratie in einer streitbaren Zivilgesellschaft, welche sich der staatlichen Kontrolle ebenso entzieht, wie sie die Besetzung des "leeren Ortes der Macht" durch die politischen Akteure verhindert. Der Band rekonstruiert die Demokratie- und Politiktheorie Leforts und bettet jene bekannte These in vielfaltige und sehr viel weiter reichende theoretische Kontexte ein. In der Arbeit mit den Ideen Leforts konnen die Beitrager daruber hinaus zeigen, dass Leforts Theorie auch fur aktuelle Phanomene und Debatten (wie z.B. die Occupy!-Bewegung, die Debatte um den Populismus und diejenige um die Konstitutionalisierung des Volkerrechts) nach wie vor von groaer Originalitat und ungeminderter Bedeutung ist.

In discussing the works of 16th-century theorists Francisco de Vitoria and Alberico Gentili, this article examines how two different conceptions of a global legal community affect the legal character of the international order and the obligatory force of international law. For Vitoria the legal bindingness of ius gentium necessarily presupposes an integrated character of the global commonwealth that leads him to as it were ascribe legal personality to the global community as a whole. But then its legal status and its consequences have to be clarified. For Gentili on the other hand, sovereign states in their plurality are the pinnacle of the legal order(s). His model of a globally valid ius gentium then oscillates between being analogous to private law, depending on individual acceptance by states and being natural law, appearing in a certain sense as a form rather of morality than of law.

Taking his critique of totalitarianizing conceptions of community as a starting point, this text examines Jean-Luc Nancy's work of an ‘ontology of plural singular being’ for its political implications. It argues that while at first this ontology seems to advocate a negative or an anti-politics only, it can also be read as a ‘theory of communicative praxis’ that suggests a certain ethos – in the form of a certain use of symbols (which is expressed only inaptly by the word ‘style’) that would render the ontological plurality of singulars perceptible and practically effective. Finally, some recent texts by Nancy even sidestep the ontology of being-with and face the question of what politics, faced with demands of justice, could be and what a democratic politics could provide. Both of these aspects in Nancy's work, however, still remain to be spelled out more politically.
